Do you wish gaming was still "just for nerds"?

While I wouldn't miss the gramers (those who only play FPS', sports games, and GTA), I'd like to see a world where video games are like books or movies, a cultural pastime with material for all ages and interests.

No, because my girlfriend is just too hot to let go of for some silly wishful thinking that we were all elitists again.

Gaming is pretty broad now. Niche games still exists, you just have to look for them because more and more games are being made. If anything i wish we didn't need publishers :( .

I feel like everyone is complaining about brown and grey shooters...yet those games are in the minority of games actually being released. I think a bigger problem is everyone trying to make a blockbuster, which is why studios close down, and a lot of games don't see profit. This will get better when used games are gone, and when publishers realize that there is a limit to the number of AAA titles that can be released. They shouldn't try to compete in filled markets. The emphasis on markets in itself is sad. If you think a game is dumb don't buy it. Look for a game that fits your taste. What i don't get is why pc gamers say games are being dumbed down for a wider audience, then say they want a new console gen. Wouldn't that drive up the costs of pc gaming? If the pc gaming audience gets smaller who is going to pay for development on it? If gaming gets more expensive then won't "dumbing down" be more common? I say a longer gen is good, it lets indie and mid tier games get more attention, and allows development costs to level off a bit (hopefully). What happens when the looks of battlefield become the standard? Not everyone has as much money as EA. So what do studios do when gamers raise there standards and ignore anything less?

Hell no. In fact, I'd be miserable if games were still a niche. You have no idea how many friends I've made from these things.

Do black people wish they were getting lynched?

Why should I be upset we are moving forward?

I consider video gaming's 'For Nerds Only' status as having been the result of a serious misstep not just for the gaming industry but for society as a whole. I'm glad that steps have been taken to rectify that mistake.

If growing acceptance can A. Convince the iPhone/smartphone/"casual" crowd to get out of their little niches and play some games that require more than a 15-minute investment, B. Stops the endless parade of sequels year after year, C. encourages developers to create new IPs with innovative gameplay and intriguing storyline, and finally D. Gets the fat-cats on their high horses to freaking admit that video games, at the very least, COULD be considered an art form, then yes, grow the fuck out of that acceptance.

But if A, B, or C can't be done, then I'd rather not see it get any more "accepted"

In order to avoid a one word reply, I am going to type out this sentence before giving my answer.

No.

I like that i'm less so cast as a weirdo for playing games, though i still get it whenever i mutter world of warcraft or get asked any form of in-depth question on the lore or history of a game.

I do like how its open to more people meaning there are more people out there playing games and enjoying them making them available for me to engage with in online games or through forum discussion (like this one)

However i do feel as if games have become cheapened because of this main stream popularity. I doubt i've become particularly more adept at games, but i notice i find them much easier than i did games on my sega megadrive or SNES.

Also games all used to be very unique from one another and now feel more and more generic as year pass by. i understand theres only a finite number of stories, gameplay mechanics and character archetypes that they can adhere to so i am expected to see some repetition and i know i shouldn't complain when they're using mechanics that have been refined into a way that makes them both enjoyable from the beginning and almost intuitive.

Call me crazy i think some of the creative got taken out when it got popular. Like when an artsy kid gets in with the popular crowd and chooses to conform rather than stand out.

I welcome all comers, just not the people who bullied me at school and drove me to video games in the first place. But this seem to be the type that the video game industry is focused on nowadays.

Yes. While I do hate foul mouth kids online and casual gamers but I rather have more people accept it as oppose the old ways that we were shun for it. Maybe some day (I hope) that Fox would stop bashing gaming being a bad thing.

I think Keven Butler Said it best

Besides the more accepted gaming is the less we will see the bs from the news saying that games are corrupting the youth.

Honestly, I like that I can go to a party full of people who normally hated me for being a nerd, only to see those same guys sitting around playing Halo, or Gears or something else.

Or hell, just to go to a party that has a mini-LAN party going on.

EDIT:
Maybe some day (I hope) that Fox would stop bashing gaming being a bad thing.
Nah, as long as there are still stupid people who believe them, they'll still continue to "report" about video games

Probably a good 10-15 years ago I recall walking into an Electronics Boutique in the mall and started browsing the games. Soon after a mother, teenage daughter, and younger son walked into the store. I overheard the teenage girl say "Mom! I can't be seen in here. This is the nerd store!" I quietly chuckled to myself.

Nowadays these same girls are WORKING at EB/Gamestop. Gaming has become a more accepted form of entertainment over the years. Even cool people play video games now.

Do you wish it was still more of a niche hobby, or do you like its growing acceptance?
To be honest I'm on the fence.

I used to enjoy gaming being such a niche thing but without the expanded audience I can't help but feel we wouldn't have made such advancements in gaming.

Fuck no.

I would rather not feel the need to hide the fact that I play video games.

I hope games become more widespread then they are now.
We didn't beforehand. Just the insecure ones.
OP: I don't care either way. I mostly play niche titles, anyway. That means that I still don't have anyone to discuss games with outside of my circle of friends.

Nope. It's nice to no longer be thought of as strange just because I play video games in my adult years. The more it's accepted, the less it will be vilified as the source of society's ills by the news media and politicians. I look forward to the day that it will be as accepted as books and film.

Having said that, there is one major issue I have with gaming gone mainstream, and that is an increase in the douchebag factor. Back when online multiplayer was still in its infancy, most players were still fairly courteous to each other. Nowadays there's a lot more in the way of total pricks who ruin the experience for everyone else.
