How the hell is that misinterpretation. They are portraying women as sex objects. That's about as sexist and derogatory as it can get different culture or no.

I'm never going to buy a Team Ninja game again. I can see why Other M was such a trainwreck.

*High five!*

I feel you, sis.

People here seem to think the problem we are taking is the breasts themselves, when in reality... We just don't want people using bullshit excuses to view and treat women like sex toys that giggle and jiggle for male entertainment--and that IS how Japan is constantly representing itself to others.

I'm not going to shrug off sexism, racism or violence in any culture just because it's not my own. It's called treating people like humans.
LOL, okay just want to point this out. The women of DoA are being treated like sex objects because we are treating them like sex objects. Let me go into detail. If the society considered heavy clothing on women sexy, where all you can see is her eyes than a game would be set to it in one form or another. Now let's take a look at the very game itself.

Are the women spreading their legs for the sole purpose of pleasing a man. No.
Are they making sexy faces while they are fighting. No.
Do they hold themselves in sexy poses at rest while contemplating the next attack? No.

At most, the women of DoA are made to wear sexy clothing but far from being actual sex objects. We of the west culture are forcing our view of what a sex object is onto a game like DoA because...well because we can.

Also we do, we do shrug violence off as "cultural" difference because we allow games like Mortal Kombat and God of War to exist. Not only do we allow them to exist, but we praise them for what they do.

p.s. That Sister is giving me a hard-on and she is a sex object to me. :p

Those are the results of Googling Dead or Alive. Seems to me like the game certainly doesn't pander to sexism and objectification of women at all! The fans and developers sure do treat women with such dignity and respect.

https://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&tok=aMhHWQ4TiSzPERXIbT0Nug&cp=13&gs_id=5&xhr=t&q=dead+or+alive&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHKZ_enAU438AU438&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&biw=1920&bih=1017&ion=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=M_k2UOW-I-iWiQfL8oGoBA

I both enjoy and find it sad when people remind me how horrible the gaming community can be, because it's funny in a way and depressing in another.
you really think the internet is the place to find the good side of a community specialty a place like Google

Yes it is our fault. :p. If that type of pandering never worked at all, either negative or positive, it would never be done. We would have fighting games where the guys and girls are conservative about their appearance and would wear a white T-shirt and some sweat pants.

Also, don't use outside sources to prove pandering of the game itself, even if it was from the developer. I could use the same logic to prove that princess peach is a sex object too :p. Also Samus, Link, Mario, Birdo, etc. Look at the very game itself, DOA5. "Could" you say the game is sexist. Yes. Would I agree that the women are sex objects only. No. Quite frankly, all those women of DoA could kick my butt while hardly breaking a sweat. If they can do that, they are not sex objects only. If a female could be me in gaming or give me a run for my money in a physical fight, I would have the hardest boner in those moments. :p

Oh, and never call me Mr. Boy Club. I would LOVE if Action/Adventure games were made by a female only studio. I have read romance books from female Authors and love what they do about the romance and sexual atmosphere.

Has anyone yet thought to ask how many Japanese people actually agree with this?

As an American, I'm all too familiar with people in my own country claiming things as legitimate, representative culture that I nonetheless find repugnant.

Outside sources... Directly from the developer... Outside... Straight from the source... Sources taken from the people and the games... Outside sources...

I don't even.

Okay, in detail. Using images outside of the actual game (DoA5) itself to prove pandering. :p

p.s. God damn that Battle Sister is hot. The things I would love to do to and for her T^T.

:p

Edit: Sorry, tired. To prove "Sex Object".

Right, big breasts fulfill an obvious male fantasy. Big muscles fulfill a male power fantasy. In both cases, Team Ninja is catering to males. It's always been their business practice.
Amen to that! I suppose to contrast, we'd need to compare DoA volleyball to a video game that caters to a female sexual fantasy...
...
..
..Wait, there isn't one.
If there's anything I have something to say about this, it's the statement that Big Muscles fulfill a male power fantasy.

By and Large, most of us geeks still are aligned with certain conceptions of our body type: pale, scrawny, and lanky. It's easy to say big muscles is what we feel is a male power fantasy because most of us don't have that. And most of us developed tastes (from being exposed to the culture) for so long. There is such a thing as 'Geek Attractive' or 'Geek Hot'. What we'd go for isn't exactly what the rest of the world might go for. A person with extra pounds might have a hard time in the normal world finding a mate, but we geeks are supposed to be out of shape, so it's something we expect and accept.

I... sort of live in both worlds. I'm not saying we geeks insulated to the rest of the world, but I don't look like a typical geek. I made a thread about this a while ago. People normally don't think I'm a geek until I start talking. People think I'm a playa or playboy or whatever the term is. And that's where I'm getting to the root of the matter.

I hear 'normal' geeks swooning over big muscles all the time.

When I start really lifting for show, when my female friends talk about this guy and that, at the gym, in the clubs, I'm hearing women and sometimes dude going crazy over cut bodies. If you want to brush these people off or these shared experiences off, that's fine. But anything you say afterwards is going to be a flawed argument. We're talking about the perceptions of culture as a whole, not the segment you choose to matter.

If women didn't dig cut bodies as much as men dug big breasts, we wouldn't have Those fireman calendars, the male soap opera stars who spend way too much time shirtless, Twilight, I don't think anyone would really give two good God Damns about men's swimming, I personally don't want to see David Beckham with his shirt off when he's selling cologne, but it happens.

I mean, do an experiment. google search the following

David Beckham
taylor lautner
The situation
Channing Tatum
mark wahlberg
Brad Pitt
hugh jackman
chris hemsworth
chris evans

... I can go on, but I'd like you to see how many shirtless pics there are of their cut bodies. It's not because some photographer decided 'I really wish I had big muscles, so that's what I'm going to focus on here'. They knew someone would be sexually titillated over it.

I'm not saying women aren't still viewed as sexual objects. I'm not comparing the amount it happens between men and women. I'm saying that they might be designing these male characters for another reason other than male power fantasy.

I mean, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I always thought the Japanese culture did not value muscles as much as us Westerners. Their heroes are always lithe and feminine.

Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of all the Team Ninja and anime games you have on your PS3. I have no doubt in the world you were never going to purchase this game and now fully intend to.
OK I'm at a complete loss here what are you talking about. hmmm hmmm still nothing and my avatar looks nothing like dead or alive not even made by the same group

You're trying way too hard to be cute and edgy.
Of course I am, it's obvious. Not gonna deny it :p That does not stop the fact that the image is gorgeous.

Now, I would also love western RPG's to be made by an all female studio staff as well. Though what I have said before still stands. The only reason females in video games are mostly sexualized is because men started first. If women did, there would still be boobs and possibly penis' in a video game. But most importantly sexual encounters would be more "detailed" I think is the word I'm looking for. If romance novels are anything to go by. :p
