I'm normally a stickler for shows ignoring their own rules (I demand Reapers when Gambon hugs himself!) but I was able to totally ignore them all for the sake of this episode. I love the story, I love Gambon's character and his performance, and more important i LOVE Matt Smith. best Doctor ever, and on top form in this episode.

just...loved it.

also the Series 6 preview looks amazing. River Song's back, they go to the Old West, and apparently Area 51. Loved the background shot of an alien in a suit at the end.

in short...next year should be a fantastic year for Whovians!

EDIT: for those saying Amy isn't a good companion...just focus on the short skirt and the legs and you'll make it through the series. if that doesn't do it for you, just focus on Rory. or the Doctor.

My thoughts:

1) The copious amounts of cheese worked, as it almost always can when carried out by a legendary actor like Michael Gambon or a talented newcomer like Matt Smith.

2) I wish we'd had more of Rory and Amy, because I like both characters and it's about time that the Doctor carried multiple companions through a series. Them stumbling onto the bridge in her policewoman's costume and his centurion outfit? Hot and hilarious.

3) Perhaps I'm biased, because I love Steven Moffat all-around, but I think he has a better grip on how to tell time-travelling stories than Davies did. I also love his willingness to poke fun at the devices of Doctor Who, such as the psychic paper shorting out trying to support the Doctor's claim of being a "mature and responsible adult" or the Doctor getting bitten by fish as he tried to babble an explanation for how singing pacified the shark.

4) The gee-whiz enthusiasm for absured sci-fi concepts like flying on a shark-pulled sleigh is part of what drew me to the show in the first place. I'd be a hypocrite if I complained about it now.

5) For my money, the best Christmas special of the new series. Avoided the all-too-common Christmas special pitfall of acting as if there's some abstract "Christmas Spirit" that magically makes people be nice, and instead boiled the story down to a study of a lonely man in a great deal of pain. Not without flaws, but fun and daring enough to more than make up for them.

i thought it was alright quite interesting how he ended up making the same decisions for different reasons, would of prefered it if it was reveled that it had always had that history behind it rather than constantly changing it. Also if the weather machine no longer works for anyone A. why did the guy (gambon) think it would B. how have they gone on for so ong at the beginnging the poor guy said that it was being constantly changed. C. why did the people on the ship dislike the guy at the end as he sould of always been nice and so should of been trying to save the ship from step one

I think if you considerate the rules, this episode is full of holes but as a standalone episode, it is fucking awesome!
I am starting to like Matt Smith's Doctor, he's weird but it's cool.

And could be paranoia of mine but the music that that blond woman sing in the end goes something like this:
"When you?re alone
Silence is all you see
When you?re alone
Silence is all you?ll be"

Could it be a reference to the (maybe) new villain The Silence?

EDIT: The "maybe" goes for the "new" part of the setence

Three things.

1) It just felt like it was all written purely to get Katherine Jenkins singing. The rest was all a bit cheesy and poorly written.

2) I like Matt Smith, he's really very funny......and pretty much the only thing worth watching in DW nowadays.

3) Fuck off Rory......seriously, just fuck off. Then come back, and fuck off again!

It went off shortly after starting.

Matt Smith is a poor actor, don't even get me started on the sidekick. Urgh.
:O HOW DARE YOU?! Matt smith is my favourite doctor so far. I couldn't stand the 9th doctor and david tennant relied too much on going "oohhhh yes!" and running off =_=. Also Amy pond has been the least annoying sidekick ... although that could be because of smexyness...
I completely agree with this. Compared to the Doctor's last full time companion, Donna, Amy is like a godess!
Agree, and that's just because Donna was the least annoying between the companions in the Davies era...

Brilliant! Absolutely loved it.

One question, though... My brother wants to know where it was that the Doctor found both Marylin Monroe and the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.). Anyone know?

I didn't like it that much.
I really think that they could of done something a bit more Doctor Who-ish for a Christmas episode instead of a redux of a famous story that is pretty much known Universally. Amy Pond still annoys me as always (I.E by doing bugger all) but I'll still say I like her a bit more than Rose.

The most amazing part about that episode was that they managed to have The Doctor ride a friggin' Shark...IN THE SKY! And all it did was seem kind of cheesy and boring.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!?!?

Also, Older whatsisface hugging his younger self...Isn't that a paradox? Why are there no Reapers?
