It was a good episode but the whole making the robot think about his humanity to stop him exploding was just plain rubbish. I'm liking Matt Smith as a Dr and am glad the Daleks are back because they are a good enemy.

Also, Jammy Dodger Self Destruct Button? Hell Yeah! Although I spent the next 5 minutes arguing with my mum whether it was a party ring or jammy dodger he was holding, naturally, I won. I know my biscuits me ;)

Between Doctor Who, Ashes To Ashes and Heroes, Weekend telly is awesome!

Broadsword to Danny Boy!
Firstly how could it be mistaken for a party ring? No whole in the middle and wrong colour! So not sure why I'm focussing on that

Secondly the Dalek ranges and Gene Hunt's Uptown Girl just merged in my brain! It may start to melt from the hilarity goodbye cruel world!

I think one of the funniest things about this thread is almost everyones' need to point out the spelling mistake.

I enjoyed the episode, as a few people said it was great fun seeing spitfires in space, but these new daleks do look a little garish for my liking- we'll see how that goes i guess...

Oh yeah! the cracks in space or time or whatever are a little too obvious.

what are peoples' opinions on the new doc by the way?

If you're going to give them a major re-haul than make them look GOOD (as in threatening) and get rid of the god-damned plunger!

They're there for a reason.

You CAN'T get rid of the plunger! It's part of the design! I do agree that they could and should look more threatening however which IMHO the RTD ones did, although they looked a bit cutsey done up as soldiers

I got sick of Russel T Davies killing off the Daleks and bringing them back over and over again, totally ruined their reputation to me. I felt the primary purpose of this episode was so the new writer Stephen Moffat could fix that; which he did brilliantly, I love the fact they've bought back a more classic look for the Daleks and can't wait to see which direction Moffat takes them in, as long as he doesn't kill them off like Davies did. Can't believe River Song is in the next episode, I was SO convinced that Amy Pond was River Song... Still could be though.

Couldn't agree with you more on the RTD thing. Why couldn't he just have the Doctor beat the Daleks but not manage to destroy them, like in this episode. My Mum (whose fault it is for me being an utter sci-fi geek) reckoned that they'd already dealt with River cause the Doctor mentioned getting married at the beginning of the Xmas episode, BTW what made you think it was Amy? not a lot of evidence yet.

A few things, remember when River said her Doctor could make entire armies turn and run with just his words? Thats exactly what he did to the Atraxi, also remember when River said her Doctor opened the TARDIS with a click of his fingers? Exactly what he did when he took Amy with him. I also think that narration that Amy did in the second episode was her writing in River's diary. Don't know what you think but it just seemed to fit together for me.

I get the sneaky feeling that the "big, obvious foreshadowing" is going to amount to...not a lot. It just seems like Moffat's style to do something like that, otherwise it's too obvious.

Love the new Daleks (though I question why one of the big ones is the "drone" and not a standard version/another role), it's a bit of a throwback to the old days whilst updating the look to be more modern.

A prime minister who is friendly with the doctor? Hell yeah. Spitfires in space, and Daleks as the "good guys" (initially anyway).

Their little trap with needing to be identified by the Doctor for the genesis thingy to actually recognise the Daleks as...Daleks was cool too - and it implies that if the "daleks" which have nearly defeated the Doctor on several other occasions are "lesser" - then that means we should be in for some serious Dalek action!

I read on the BBC website that Matt Lucas' Doctor was going to be more along the lines of the Fourth Doctor played by Tom Baker as in quirky and not as dark as David Tennent's Tenth Doctor. However like yourself I am wary as to what direction the show is taken as I was rather enjoying the development of the tenth Doctor into the darker side of a Time Lord. Time will tell.

I thought it was kinda cool, especially the whole spitfire and space scenario. But on a similar note I cannot wait until next week's episode, I've always had a love for the angel statues.

The time will be upon us, the time of Angels.

But I'd check the search bar [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.189252.5857309] next time.

Don't know what happened there. I think this is a reasonable idea but it might place some severe limitations on how Amy and River interact with each other, also couldn't he have learned these things since he met River? He did the click thing at the end of that pair of episodes

Personally I thought this was the weakest episode since the 2005 revamp, I'm not a fan of Matt Smith as the doctor either. Amy Pond is fine as a companion and probably would have been a brilliant foil to David Tennant's "zany" doctor so far she appears to be coming off as the doctors more mature smarter sister.

There were just too many plotholes and faults with this story that you can't pick at them without the entire story falling apart.

I've not been impressed by any of the series 5 episodes yet, I know it's only three episodes so far but they usually try and bracket the weak ones with at least one strong one.

Quite like the new/retro colours of the Daleks but the new shells look ridiculous.

These colours are representative of the dalek council so it's possible the "generic" dalek we'll see will be more drab and militaristic. They may even retain the original revamped casings. I hope so.

I've been a fan of doctor who since Pertwee's tenancy of the tardis and for the first time I'm having to force myself to watch the episodes, that's not a good sign.

Edit:

Matt Lucas?! Now that I'd like to see!

I thought it was a shit episode.

Very contrived reason for how the Daleks survived their total destruction in Series 4, Spitfires in space was totally improbable...apparently they managed to modify them, scramble them and destroy the dish in under 10 minutes, before the German bombers arrived. Yeah...right.

OT yeah it was a great epi but im not too sure about the new daleks, im still not sure why they are more pure than the older ones...
Those Daleks were created from tissue taken from Davros (see season 4 ending), so they wern't of the same genetical mutations that the original Dalek DNA are based from. The new ones are created from pure Dalek DNA.

I thought they DID look rather threatening (the new ones), though the colours are a little...retro (not a bad thing, but different). Also, it's weird how well the khaki daleks fitted into the War Room setting. They just seemed to...belong

That original Dalek episode with Eccleston was a damn brilliant, shocking and epic episode. They really conveyed the danger of daleks
