I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I can't wait for it, I think it is an amazing tv show.
What do you think's so good about it?
I don't know, all I know is that I love it, I think the writing the feel and the acting, the spin-offs can be fun too.

Right, now it's over I have some time to answer that.

Doctor Who is the archetypal family TV show, something that has elements designed to appeal to all ages, whilst being primarily aimed at children. It was originally conceived as an educational show in the early sixties and has been massively influential on TV in general and Sci-Fi in particular. Continuing TV sf falls into one of two tropes, those influenced by Who and those influenced by Star Trek.

DW is, above all, a massively flexible setup, and an episode can be anything from hard SF to knockabout farce to period drama. Sometimes, indeed most of the time, it falls short of what it can be, but its fans stick with it because of its massive potential. Historically it was given a very poor budget, so if you've seen any of the old episodes some of them can be downright embarrassing to watch. It works best when it constrains itself a little, and writes around what can be done rather than trying to film what can be written.

Something that can be anything, and anywhere, is both its greatest downfall as well as its greatest strength. Star Trek used to build very expensive sets and reuse them over and over until their expense was spread so thin as to be insignificant. Who reinvents almost everything every week. That's hard work to keep up to the quality of, both in terms of budget and invention.

What is so great about it from a parent and teachers point of view is it is an action adventure series that concentrates on a hero that advocates intelligence, learning, knowledge, cunning diplomacy, science and a sense of wonder over violence.

Who is wonderful and uplifting and spiritual in a secular world and if you have missed out on it, particularly as a child, I feel nothing but sorrow for you.

Just occured to me they fucked up several things.

a) They didn't exposite the Doctors on his final regeneration therefore making his 'OMG Im gonna die speach' a touch underwhelming. Maybe a monologue about all the lives hes lived etc ....

b) They didnt use the opportunity to add new visual imagery of bad guys just some cool sounding words. Degenrates of midoth etc etc etc.

c) They didnt use the Timelord bubble nonsense as an opportunity to reboot the reboot and bring back the classic bad guys & giving them carte blanche to utilise original episodes as reference and resource.

On a side note who was the old lady?
I think the implication was that the old lady was Donna?

Matt Smith looks good from what little we've seen. However, I have one problem: I think the Beeb is making this latest series very VERY child-friendly.
The new logo. The youthful, charming new Doctor. His "geronimo"...it just jars with me. For now.

I believe it was either the doctors daughter or wife.. Wife i think, From the library episode where the shadows ate people
They never said. There was just an indication he recognised her andseeing as both his wife and his daughter are outside the time lock I'd doubt it. Unless he'd been married before of course.

I'm still praying that at some point they'll actually make a Time War series and show all the badassery that went on at that time. Bonus points if they get Christopher Eccleston to play the part of The Doctor or someone else who then regenerates into Eccleston.

Loved the episode. Thought it was much better than Part One, which was a bit of a mess.
Martha said she was married to Mickey? Or was that just playful banter? I hope it was, 'cause if not, what happened to that Doctor she was married to in The Sontaran Stratagem? Ah, whatever.
I agree that Tennant seemed to take a long time to die, but I loved his final words. Brilliant.

And although I haven't seen much of Matt Smith, he seems interesting. Presumably he'll put his own stamp on the show once the new series rolls around. I do hope Geronimo isn't his catchphrase though - that'd just be silly.

Incidentally, I think the new series airs in March or April. Or at least, it should, based on previous years.

EDIT: Having watched the preview, I guess Geronimo is his catchphrase. Oh boy.

I space out and missed what happened to The Master!

The mortal Kombat theme started going through my head as he was zapping Dalton, like Raiden, with lightening from his hands. Finish Him!

No, I still think that one is up for grabs. My bet would be Susan or Romana. Or the White Guardian, out of left field, but I don't think he would recognise an incarnation of that by sight. Needs to be someone who could be in the bubble, and I don't think either the Doctor's daughter or whoever the library person was qualifies for that.

What I was irritated about was the lack of clips of the following series, that we normally get after the Christmas special. That was half the reason I was watching the damn thing.

*snore*

Used to watch it, but I've grown out of it - many episodes are just ridiculous (in the cheesy, embarassing writing way). I always liked the episode with the devil, but after the episode with the puff pastry things (I'd already been feeling it was getting stupid) I think I stopped caring.

The doctor never develops as a character - they constantly hint at how lonely he is, and that's about as deep as it gets. Yeah I get that, but they've been doing that since the re-boot.

Not sure about the Doctor revisiting Rose. Wouldn't she have recognised him when Doctor 9 became Doctor 10? OK, it was dimly lit, and she'd probably been drinking, but still that got me a little. :/
She mentioned it was 2005, I'm not sure, but I get the feeling that was a day or so before she first met The Doctor.

I thought the mystery woman who cried was the Doctor's mother. But hey ho.

Tranka: Trailer. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/newyear/] UK residents only, sadly.

The Mysterious Woman. Just wish they'd mentioned her name. Lost money because they didn't.
I can almost garantee it was his mother.

Anyway, she's bound to come up again, you may get a chance to win your money back.

Was not as impactful as I had hoped. But I did like Tennant and am sad to see him go.

Will wait and see on the new set up - new actor, new tardis, new assistant and new production force with Stephan Moffat replacing Russell T Davis.

Am just happy to see the Beeb making some sci fi (Christmas was also good for Day of the Triffids) instead of churning out soap and reality shows. Dr Who has always crossed demographics a bit and that is not always comfortable or made for great episodes. But I will still be tuning in when it restarts in the Spring and giving the new set up a go.

Just don't let him holler Geronimo every 5 minutes...that is already irritating.

OK, SPOILERS, for those outside the UK that can't view the trailer:

Some of the things of note in the trailer:
The stone angels, apparently on a spacecraft
Daleks
Vampires
Woman from the library (River Song)
The Doctor shooting a pistol(!)

Amen to that. Also in the trailer, there was about 5 frames of a Weeping Angel. Please dont let them come back as they were great for a 1 off but I doubt it would work a second time around.

The Doctor shooting the pistol caught me by surprise as well. Didn't spot River Song though *goes and has another look*

EDIT AGAIN
Oh yeah, there she is

Sorry! The Grand Lord Moffat the First [Salutes] has already confirmed that the Weeping Angels are in it. As are the Daleks, which he was apparently not particularly keen on using. Oh well, I have faith in our new and glorious leader.

The new doctor is looking horrible, but I dunno, maybe he's a good actor, it's just his appearance doesn't suit the role at all.

I said during the final part I said "Hmm, Christopher Eccleston didn't have this many friends to say goodbye to."
