Does anybody else sense a lack of musical diversity on the escapist?

Yeah, I don't really get it but there seems to be some kind of no-reason link between geek culture and metal. Who knows why? I listen to most things, but I've never really cared for metal. It's not that I find it bad, but it's not interesting to me. Of course the genre is rather too broad to make such a sweeping judgement on as a whole, so I'll concede that I like some metal. Just not much of it, and that's certainly an odd gap in my taste.

I listen to whatever turns me on(not in that way). It could be literally ANY BLOODY GENRE! Its not the genre that matters its the individual song.
That said my musuic folder is mostly full of J-pop/other japanese songs related to anime, but you asked for something else then i would say i thoroughly enjoy this song.

I listen to all sorts. Essentially whatever grabs my fancy. I present the following for your consideration.

I definitely understand where the OP is coming from. A big problem is that Escapists are really obsessed with objectivity, even to the point where they'll objectively explain concept of subjectivity. This often ends up with comments like "hip hop isn't music, it's just words to a beat" and some honestly believe that's a valid argument. It comes down to people on this site simply not being into music as much as they are games. When you aren't as invested in something, you often take the safe route and don't like to branch out or experiment because you haven't yet exhausted what's been made available to you. But people also like to sound decisive in their arguments, even about something they don't fully appreciate.

Many Escapists will tell you that they "totally appreciate music, they just don't like certain kinds and that's their opinion and you must not understand what an opinion is." Truth is, you are completely right, there is a lack of music appreciation, caused by the inability to get past certain prejudices. People think that having an opinion on a subjective matter automatically excuses them from accusations like yours, when it absolutely doesn't. Maybe hating an entire genre of music is just a part of your personality but that still means you don't appreciate music as much as you should.

Appreciation is about being open-minded with your opinion, not sealing yourself behind a wall that's been mislabeled as "subjectivity". Don't use your opinions as a guide, use them as a description. Opinions are the result, not the criteria, anyone who truly appreciates something knows that.

Lol, given that i love heavy metal i feel a little targeted by that thread. What i would point out is though that nerds, which make up the majority population of the Escapist, like any sub-culture, are going to be more inclined to certain music genres than others. Heck, most sub-cultures have music devoted to such sub-cultures, nerds are different in that we don't.

Anyhow, as specified by the OP, no metal or OST music:

I'm sorry, perhaps you should look a tad harder? I don't blame you for coming to that conclusion but nevertheless it's far from the truth.

Take me for an example, I may have a rock/heavy-metal related avatar but I love genres like House and Hip-Hop. My favourite artists are Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Vocaloid, Megadeth, Modest Mouse, Luca Turilli and a few others. If you ask, one will receive.

In every music thread I say that I'm not interested in pretty much all those things you just listed. I like me some Gary Numan, Cast, some indie pop bands from Cardiff, some weird electronica bands. That sort of thing.

Anyone who says Rap and Hip hop isn't music has never heard of Nujabes, Shing02 or MF Doom.
And some math rock because math rock is always fun

I'm sure some of you will have heard the last one even if you don't know it.

Some more stuff with no real genres

Eh, its just how things go, you know? It also seems like most Escapists are some form of liberal/democrat/lefty/communist/watever.
There have been thread devoted to different kinds of music, like punk and Rabecca Black.
I prefer Modest Mouse and My Chem, kind of music.
And I do follow music and movies, not so much music now though.
What I'm listening to now, and the only song (other than stand-up comedy) on my laptop:

whilst I'd like to point out I do like games since the last new console I bought was the Nintendo DS (the oringal at that) I would hardly come under the hardcore gamer tag, but I do like a wide range of music as can be detailed here:
http://www.last.fm/user/jonoortrev

if you're wondering why I've had no scrobbles since June its because I moved back home and now spend all my time listening to physical releases instead of my music library on my computer. And also it won;'t help that the scrobbler is on my laptop with no internet connection and my internet connection is on a computer I have no admin rights too, WAHEY!

I would all thoroughly recommend listening to my top 8 bands, they're all fairly different genres, Indie/Post Hardcore/true skramz/Crust Punk/Ska Punk/Cabaret/whateverdevindtownsendis (some form of metal)/etccccc

yeah.

also for anyone who listens to Hatebreed and goes 'hey they've got a good original idea on what Hardcore is': Integrity and Earth Crisis will ruin almost all of your expectations forever more.

I'll admit my musical taste does tend toward the hard rock end of the spectrum. However, I also enjoy Basshunter, Daft Punk, some of Little Kuriboh's song parodies, Switchfoot, Thousand Foot Krutch (I feel I should point out at this point in time that I'm an atheist), Treble Charger, and 3 Doors Down. And Lights has a few good songs.

There has been loads of threads on drum and bass/dubstep this past year.

Also I rarely listen to any of the genres posted in the OP, it's mostly ska punk/acoustic schtuff.

Aye, I have been around these forums a mighty long time and I've found that for the most part, yes, music threads are usually chockers with j-pop, metal or videogame music (usually also from Japanese games...*shrugs*). It's not necessarily a bad thing, and I've found that it rings true across most of the internet...not to say I haven't seen some nice variety on these forums that's even added to what I listen to.

As for asking about my taste in music, well, my favourite band that's still around is Elbow

and my favourite band of all time is The Beatles. Beyond that I'd say that while I only have a few grand devotions to certain bands and genres, overall I can dig alot of different stuff.

I like pop now. I didn't a couple of years ago but...

Music grows on you no matter what genre guys. If you 'despise' a genre, I bet if you get surrounded by the type of music it will grow on you and you will eventually like it.

This particular artist has combined a couple of my favourite genres (pop and house) and I find that awesome!

So yeah, I like j-pop (although I don't listen to it often) and VG OSTs too (not so much metal, I don't really listen to it much). But they are by no means my favourite genre.
