Does anybody else sense a lack of musical diversity on the escapist?

Not true! I like Dark Cabaret, but no one ever asks me about it. ;D

Also, Industrial!

(The bass sucks on youtube videos. Try to get a good version of this song, turn up the volume and let it massage your soul. To quote the slogan of a radio station: It's like a God rubbing your tummy.)

I hate Metal and all of it's incarnations (and there is a hell of a lot of them). I prefer hip hop, electronica, techno, JRock and rap. I do like softer rock such as Queens of the Stone Ago or Elbow as well. Just not a fan of metal.

I've seen a surprisingly high number of post-rockers here on The Escapist whch I think is great seeing as i've never met another one in person.

I listen to metal to rap to techno to dance to dub step to indie to alternative to progressive rock and all things in between. Trust me, I'm pretty diverse.

As I said in another thread I listen to a lot of 80's and 60's that I was brought up on as a child. My parents were 60's hippie kids.

I'm not a fan of a lot of modern "music" and have never heard of a lot of the bands some people post up on vairous websites I visit.

I do like the odd song I hear but just think some songs sound better done by a leather clad mullet on legs.

you have to consider the dominant demographic groups, most of them are pretty young where identity formation and influence of peers (online and offline)are still a major factor in their cultural interests and preferences...

Cultural diversity will come with time, sub cultural tastes are still perfectly possible then but it will be more of a choice of lifestyle than a fad

I listen to a lot of mainstream music (usually whatever's in the UKtop40, so a lot of dance, pop, R&B etc.). I'm listening to Swedish House Mafia right now, actually. Yeah, I like listening to it, so sue me. I also listen to a lot of game and movie OSTs, and I don't mind dubstep and DnB, so it's pretty varied.

Well according to 'Genius' I listen to Adult Alternative, Alt Rock, Alternative, Alt Pop, Brit Pop & Rock and a lot of Indie. But even I don't have a clue what Adult Alternative is! I'm also a big Last.fm user, and am going to a festival this summer!

On a side note check out Welcome Home, Son by Radical Face:

And if you don't check out To Lose My Life by White Lies you are seriously missing out (seen them live twice!)

Personally, I don't "really" like metal and I don't listen to jpop. The bands I listen to most are Daft Punk and he Gorillaz.

Anyway, this is a website dedicated to a bit more "hardcore" section of gaming, not a lot of people fall into this and the lot that do, tend to have similar tastes.

I imagine that you wouldn't have a lot of trouble speaking about American football, the dance scene and the like to fratboys, but more often than not, would get stumped on a discussion of the efficiency to cost ratio for nuclear reactors. It's the same here, the lot who consider and identify themselves as gamers aren't really the lot that tend to so to say, "hit the floor" or go to the opera.

And game OST music in itself is VERY varried.
As simple examples, "Phendara Drifts" of Metroid Prime, the J-pop(?) of Kingdom hearts, The Rolling Stones "Symphony of the Devil" from black ops, the Borderlands "No rest for the wicked" or hell even the all popular portals "Still Alive". Game music doesn't really have a defined genre of it's own, you can find whatever you like in it.

So, us preferring real music over computer generated soulless noise is a bad thing?

What is this I don't even.

Despite just registering tonight, I've been lurking these forums for a while, and I've noticed something. There seems to be an immense lack of diversity of music on the escapist.
I'll chuck you some music, sit back and relax dear... Jesus? Oh man.

We're all individuals, but when threads are made common interests are found and people talk about those and stuff they don't agree on is just kinda politely ignored.

There was a depressing music thread the other day that had examples from all sorts of genres, metal, soundtrack and otherwise.

As for myself, I like a pretty wide variety of music. I like Bob Dylan and The Beatles, I like Iron Maiden and Guns N' Roses, Siouxsie and the Banshees, PJ Harvey, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Oasis and Blur, Jeffrey Lewis, and I think that The Horrors may have made the album of the year. If it falls between Marilyn Manson and La Roux, I'll give it a listen.

I think most people will have a wider variety than it seems, it's just that certain genres crop up more frequently. It's hard to deny the metal-gaming correlation when everything from Prince of Persia to Splatterhouse have had metal soundtracks. Games like Shatter and Wipeout that have soundtracks closer to dance and electro are usually in the minority compared to J-Pop and Metal. Maybe if there were more of them, they'd be discussed more often.

According to my mp3 my top three of played songs are:

Also, I have absolutely no J-pop or game OST's on my mp3 at all, not on my computer either.

OP's arguments are greatly flawed.
I think that many on this forum are just as devoted to music as to games, it's just that they don't feel the need to be validated because of their taste in music. Now obviously I seem a bit of a hypocrite by posting some of mine, but... I'm okay with that.

But so what if only certain genres are discussed? You want to discuss something else? Then create a topic, as you already did.

Out of interest, what do you consider real music and what do you consider soulless noise?

Hey, it's not my fault that not everyone like Muse or Foo Fighters.

OT: Of course this is a video game website so they would have j-pop, metal, etc. But I'm guessing that because there aren't many threads like this, not everyone posts what music they like.
