An RPG is an RPG. I have found myself leaning towards JRPGs heavily, but that's just because I do seem to find something wonderful about executing a complex plan after scrolling through a convoluted interface (I also play SRPGs a LOT, so that would explain a few things).

I have liked JRPGs for years. I am glad the Shin Megami games are finally picking up in popularity.

I always have and still enjoyed J-RPGs. I will say the Western RPG has picked up lately and Dragon Age and Mass Effect have consumed many hours of my time, but I still have a soft place in my hard for J-RPGs despite all the horrible cliches they tend to fulfill.

JRPGs this generation have been mediocre at best (except for Demon's Souls). Chronotrigger and FF6 are so much better than modern JRPGs it's not funny.

I'm getting a bit tired of this sites hatred for jrpgs. Are there any jrpg fan here including Final fantasy?

Well, I don't really hate them, the only thing that I hate about them it's that like 99.999% that I know of is only for consoles and I'm a PC gamer. And no, I don't like MMO's.

I happen to prefer JRPGs over Western RPGs. I dunno, it's something about large, hairy men flinging themselves about at enemies or wenches with the same amount of enthusiasm that kind of turns me off. It might be just me.

I'm a fan of pretty much all the games that Nippon Ichi has put out here in North America (Disgaea series, Atelier Iris series, and Ar Tonelico series to name a few). I used to be a Square fan as well, but pretty much everything post-FFX I've been disappointed with.

I like them especially JRPG's from PS1 and 2 like the Suikoden and Persona series. I just don't like how annoying and generic the plots and characters are starting to become.

I am quite the Dragon Quest fan.

Most JRPGs I just stay away from. But every now and then, the occasional Baten Kaitos Origins, Golden Sun, or Dragon Quest V will come along to brighten my day.

I like all my games to be lighthearted. No angsty heavy blah blah Final Fantasy crudskies. I like the JRPGs that make you feel like the story was written for the player, instead of the other way around. Case in point, my favorite Final Fantasies are III and IV.
If you prefer your JRPGs with some humor in them, try Shadow Hearts: Covenant. It has so much humor in it that the only way to take it seriously is as a parody of JRPGs. The combat system is original and the plot is so hilariously overdone it's like nothing you have ever seen(one of your party members is a gay vampire professional wrestler who talks like a he got rejected from a super hero audition and another member is Anastasia Romanov... yes, that one).

Essentially it's what you would get if you took a history book, combined it with a JRPG plot and added in the Lovecraft mythos (Lovecraft is even a minor character in the third installment of the series) and a massive amount of references and homages to classic horror and literature.
Sounds like Eternal Sonata... Except instead of Chopin, there's H.P. Lovecraft.
I've never played Eternal Sonata, for the record. It looks GROSS. It's like tri-crescendo had some Sakuraba compositions left over from Baten Kaitos and decided to make a game about them.

Lighthearted does not equal humor. That is an important distinction to make. Lighthearted games can have humor, but they also know when to take themselves seriously. In my opinion, Dragon Quest VIII did this very, very well.

Gay wrestler vampire, eh?

I prefer Baten Kaitos Origins' androgynous two-voiced magic-casting ancient deadpan snarker robot puppet that looks and moves like the lovechild of Dr. Frank N. Furter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Soul Calibur's Voldo.

And he had an amusing personality, well written lines, an interesting backstory, and some of the most kickass attacks ever. Guillo for the win.

I don't believe in the bias for RPGs. A WRPG and a JRPG are both RPGs so really people need to get over it. (btw i love RPGs so is y i fight for this cause). Its the same way that an anime is a cartoon whether it's from Japan or not, besides the word anime is just short for animation so all animations are included when saying this. A friend of mine asked a Japanese girl what her favorite anime was and she said "Tom and Jerry". wait where was I going with this. Oh yeah! Just because it's from a different country (MAINLY JAPAN) doesn't mean it's a load of shit and anyone who says otherwise is an ignoramus.

I've played both, and can honestly say that Covenant's just as awesome as Origins, except a parody, mostly.
Edit: And for the record, I'm with you on Sonata. I played the demo and stopped because the music sounded TOO much like Baten Kaitos'. Like Sakuraba just remixed some stuff and gave them a CD so he could go back to bed.

I really prefer JRPGs, most WRPGs I've played have been a bit meh. The only W-RPG style game I've enjoyed is FF12. I have one sitting on my shelf that I haven't touched much yet, Legion : Legend of Excalibur, it's... ok.

The Kingdom Hearts series(mainly 1&2 for me) are my absolute favorite JRPGs. The concept is extremely retarded at first glance, but somehow they made it work and it does a damn good job of it too. I like how it's a rpg with a hack-n-slash combat system. I like how the developers spent their time making your feel tiny compared to some of the bosses you face. I like how every boss has a pattern that can be found if you pay enough attention. I like how you can tell that you are what's making the story move along. I like how the story keeps you guessing without being extremely convoluted. I like that you can quite visually see what you're upgrades are doing. And I love the sense of fulfilment you get from beating the bosses.
