Does anyone else think ME is overhyped and overpraised?

Dragon Age might be overhyped and overrated, it was a damn good game but not the second coming of Christ that everyone seemed to think it was.

Mass Effect, though, deserves all the praise it was given. (And all the criticism too, as far as the first one's vehicle and shooter mechanics were concerned.)

Okey, lets look at the competition.

No, I think not. To be fair, most Bioware games are better than most other roleplaying/action games. Gameplay and storywise. I can't honestly think of any game that are better at the moment. The only game they've done so far that have been lacking was Mass Effect 1.

Are we so cynical?

Have we been hurt so many times before, that when a single company doesn't disappoint us and instead manages to consistently make very good (but not necessarily perfect) games in completely different settings we must spurn them and cast them down as being overhyped and overpraised?

EA, Ubisoft and all those others must have really done a number on us.

Have to agree that Dragon Age was overhyped, it played more like a "cheap" D&D clone than an original title. Mass Effect may also be, but I like them both too much to notice.

I would say the games were overhyped, but then, I say the same about pretty much every game, movie, and TV show I encounter these days. This is probably due to my increasing cynicism, but the fact of the matter is nothing is quite as good as claimed to be. The claims are made to make more people purchase whatever is being sold, and so are to be expected.

That said, I found Mass Effect to be adequate, and fairly entertaining. It wasn't a ground-breaking game for me, nor did I feel any sort of enlightenment from it (which I haven't felt since Planescape, anyway), and I only bought it because it was on sale on Steam. It is not a bad game, but not a great one either. Dragon Age seemed to have a larger number of flaws and annoyances, but was still a fairly good game as well.

I never played Dragon Age, so I can't comment. But Mass Effect? Hell yes it's overrated.

The gameplay is ok, but nothing special. Kinda reminds me of a less developed version of MDK...

The storyline though? It's not brilliant, and it certainly isn't original. (Ancient Machines bent on eradicating all life? Because that's not been done before...) There's more plot holes than a witty metaphor I can't think of right now. It's also extremely prejudiced against inorganic life, what's up with that anyhows? I've seen a handful of vidjagames where sentient machines are ever portrayed as anything other than the ultimate evil, and only one comes to mind where they're actually good guys...

Overrated? Yes a bit; I am a massive Bioware fanboy and I love both ME and DA:O to bits but the immense hypestorm following both was just ridiculous :)

One of the reasons I only played ME was because Seth Green was in it =D And also the dialogue was pretty well done. Combat was kinda shit though if you ask me. The recharging weapons, the annoying Halo like crosshair, you get my gist.

All in all, it was fun enough to play but as far as Bioware goes, it was one of their worst games. I prefer their older ones like Baldur's Gate and such.

What do you really want RPGs for.. the shooting ability, the storyline or some other random reason (you know who you are).. heh. ME is abit repetitive and even on insane it is easy enough but its the story that keeps me interested (though several play throughs later gets abit tedious). If I wanted some FPS action we have MW2 and Halo, heh. In the end it all comes down to personal preference.

lol I learned my lesson not to follow hype when Age of Conan came out.

But on topic, yes they were overhyped, but that didn't bother me since I didn't follow it.

*twitches* Oh, wait, you championed Fable before, didn't you?

Other RPGs such as Oblivion and Fable gave life to their worlds in a way that Bioware just hasn't...
Oh good, you did. Cool. Now we can talk about "Overhyped". I bought that game at launch on Xbox, and the product I got was a much shallower, though not actually bad game. I was promised features and features. I read the magazines, got the previews and trailers, heard about such awesome things as a "dynamic world", "NPC heroes" who you'd compete with, and so on, and barely any of it was there.

The game was solid. Fable was a good, competent game. I enjoyed it. However, I felt ripped off. Peter Molyneux, much more so than Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk ever did, hyped his games up personally, with great fervour and zeal, and then had to scale back his ambitions after making promises or he'd never be able to release or make money.

THAT is overhyping. Be more clear about what you want to talk about - "Anyone else think Mass Effect was kinda dead?" is not the same as "Mass Effect was overhyped and overpraised, didn't you think?"
I have to agree that you are 100% correct on Fable 2 being overhyped for what it was and that I hold no place in my heart for Peter Molyneux.
I also have to admit I made this thread expecting nothing but flaming and "no you suck" replies and got quite a few decent resposes and opinions, way to go Escapist. I will probably get around to trying ME2 at some point in time after I've finished all the new games I've got piled up waiting to be played, especially since you guys actually managed to give me a greater perspective than just "Best game evah, go buy nao!" which is all I've had to go on in the past. :)

YES! And by yes I mean, ME2 is by far the best game that I have ever played. ME2 was an amazing game that gripped me by the testicles and did not let go until I had beat it 3 different times. And now I want to play it again now that you brought it up. But im trying to hang on until I beat Darksiders which is actually surprisingly good.
Surely you mean 'quads', there big guy ;-)
OT - No I don't think they are over hyped I think they do what they say on the tin and that is provide a lot of fun for people who enjoy this style of play, which I and many others do hence the good sales and the large amount of praise heaped on the games.
