Does anyone else think ME is overhyped and overpraised?

I have zero interest in Dragon Age, but I plan on "borrowing" my GF's copy of ME (since she's playing 2 again) just to try it.

(I'm a late bloomer to the XBox, you see...)

Since I avoid reading gaming mags, and I don't really watch TV, I wasn't bombarded with any promotion for either. I basically play console games (that aren't true RPGs) on a word-of-mouth basis.

The Mass Effect series is great.

I wasn't a big fan of Dragon Age, though. I loved Bioware's other RPGs (Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment), but Dragon Age just didn't grab me in the same way.
Planescape: Torment was actually developed by Black Isle, it just used a modified version of the Infinity engine.

Sorry, I'm just very accurate when it comes to my beloved Planescape.

And I agree with you otherwise, except I like Dragon Age very much.

What good did 3D ever do to RPGs?

I could list what flaws Bioware's stories have in my opinion, but it I don't know if it would be anything like your list. Maybe you could explain your opinion a bit more?

Honestly, from this? I do kinda think "less talky more shooty".
I feel like 3d really helps because it crafts a more believable and immersive world and I'm not hating on Bioware at all, they made some of my favorite games of the late 90s/early 00s such as Neverwinter nights.
I honestly feel as though they've been repackaging and reselling the same games ever since then, because they all just sort of have the same feel to them, if you get what I mean. The game itself isn't my problem nor are the characters. It's just that none of it feels alive to me, like none of it matters.
Other RPGs such as Oblivion and Fable gave life to their worlds in a way that Bioware just hasn't, and that's what matters to me, I want to feel like I care about the characters as people and not just see them as a tool to filter dialogue and story through.
I'll add that I don't think they're bad games, they just seem too lifeless. If you get what I'm saying.
How could you give a shit about any of the characters in Oblivion? They all had the same damn voice actor, all acted the same with rare exceptions and all of them combined had about half the personality of a ham sandwhich with no cheese. The only character with any personality at all was Sheogorath (Now he seemed fairly well done). How can a game world feel alive when everyone is exactly the same, not to mention inconsistent? I must admit I do find it funney when the crazy beggars randomly change personalities though. Considering your taste in characters, I'm not sure your emotional processes are functioning properly.

Okay I haven't played either of those, but I can safely say I probably won't like either of them.

I'm a JRPG man. I have played Oblivion, KOTOR, and Fallout 3, and the only one I liked was Fallout. I know that isn't much experience, but I've been told that ME is like KOTOR..

Blah blah blah...

Yeah they're over-hyped, but what mainstream game isn't? I personally generally only play older games, well if you call the PS2 old. Generally PS2 backwards I play, back to the SNES

Off-Topic: My bro calls The Incredible's sooo old, but thinks a book written in 1987 isnt. Weird.
Just because you don't like a style of game doesn't mean it's overhyped by default. If that were true, then every JRPG ever made would be an overhyped piece of shit as I do not like their style.

I never played Dragon Age, so I can't comment. But Mass Effect? Hell yes it's overrated.

The gameplay is ok, but nothing special. Kinda reminds me of a less developed version of MDK...

The storyline though? It's not brilliant, and it certainly isn't original. (Ancient Machines bent on eradicating all life? Because that's not been done before...) There's more plot holes than a witty metaphor I can't think of right now. It's also extremely prejudiced against inorganic life, what's up with that anyhows? I've seen a handful of vidjagames where sentient machines are ever portrayed as anything other than the ultimate evil, and only one comes to mind where they're actually good guys...
I'm assuming you haven't played ME2 if that's what you think Bioware are setting all the inorganic life up to be.
How astute of you to predict that I'm not the sort of person that forks out £30 on the sequel to a game I didn't really like. I quiver in anticipation of your next brilliant deduction ^^
Ah I was wearing the clever trousers and the thinking cap at the time so I can't possibly take all the credit and I shall try most heartily not to disappoint next time :)

Keep in mind I haven't played ME2 and I wont claim to have since I couldn't, no matter how much I tried, enjoy the first one. I thought there was way too much boring dialect and too little combat to make the game appealing.
Personally, I didn't enjoy the first Mass Effect either. I felt the story was weak, the music was lousy and the combat was clunky and unpleasant. That said, ME2 was terrific. Easily among the best games I've played this year. I can't recommend enough that you at least rent it.

As to Dragon Age, that sort of Western RPG is an acquired taste.

It's good...but dear god people...It's not THAT good. Hell, I didn't even bother finishing it. FF13 came out during my run...so.

It's not that I think Dragon Age is bad, it's just that it's not all that good. Baldur's Gate (the second game, not so much the first) had an epic storyline and a truly interesting villain. I only got about halfway through DA:O, but it just didn't have the same feel to it. Plus, the combat system felt... off. At least for BG, it made sense for the combat to be confusing, since it was based on the shitstorm that is AD&D. But Dragon Age was made from scratch, so they should have been able to make it flow more smoothly.

Yes it is over-hyped but that doesn't make it a bad game.

Just not as good as some people would have you believe.

I can understand why you don't like it so much, I sometimes am bored by it myself, but I always start liking it again.

Baldur's Gate (2 more) had a really interesting story and a villain, when Dragon Age's story is quite generic (though well written) and the villain doesn't (at least this point) seem to have much personality at all.

And the combat system is worse than in Baldur's Gate games, though not as bad as KotOR's or such.

Haha you said dialect when you should have said dialouge(my spelling sucks haha). But no I believe ME2 was possibly the best game I've ever played, the first one was extremely enjoyable but there were a lot of boring and frustrating parts. In other words no it is not over praised, BioWare rules.

ill agree on that ME is overpraised. i played the first and second one for 2 painfull hours each and i sincerily regret it. i dont have anything against the people who love the game, but besides 2´s great visuals, there was nothing i enjoyed...

i will however disagree slightly on Dragon Age. i love the game alot, but it didnt exactly revolutionize the same way Baldur´s Gate did. it did however, have some great combat, believeable characters (to the extent of it being a fantasy game), great dialogue and some good voice acting.

the only part i really hated was the Sloth Demon Fade thingy.

This is off topic, but when I started reading the original thread, he never said Mass Effect, just ME. I couldn't think of the name at first, but I knew it was made by Bioware. Want to know how I remembered the name? Yahtzee's terrible pun at the end of his Mass Effect 1 review ("it will hardly make your mass erect"). Then I recalled the name as Mass Effect. That's sad. Hahaha

But yeah, I think ME and ME2 are good, but not the greatest games ever. I think ME2 was overhyped.

Yeah, I do. I love it personally, it's one of the best games I've ever played, but I think people tend to overpraise it. Or rather, go on and on about how good it is. It's good, you've made your point.

Yup. I thought the entire game was shit.

You are not alone, but remember, most of us have been driven underground by insane Bioware fans.

I'm really not sure what you're complaining about. Your saying there is too much dialogue and not enough combat? Yet you love Quantic Dream's "games"? care to elaborate? Sounds like you just don't like the bioware style of RPG. That would make that your personal preference, but it wouldn't make ME overhyped/praised
EDIT-

I never like Biowares RPG, I could handle KOTOR because it was Star Wars.
They really do limit your gameplay options, which in an RPG is pretty much defeating the purpose..
limit your gameplay options, how? Other than Bethesda's RPGs I can think of no others that have less limiting gameplay options. please explain what you meant by that.
I'm always stuck on some linear path, I can't freely roam around a place, They limit your exploration immensely, no jump button, etc.
In Bethesda RPGs, there is true freedom, being able to go anywhere at any time, When I mean anywhere I mean anywhere, not just some small path going through the woods.
Bethesda's RPGs and Bioware's RPGs belong to two separate (and very distinct) RPG sub-genres.

OT: Completely disagree, but that's fine.

Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I've ever played, and the first was very good too. I also found Dragon Age to be an astounding game.

Whilst I haven't played Heavy Rain there are apparently, according to Games Radar, some giant plot-holes that make the story complete bullshit.

Mass Effect is well acted and written, so in-terms of story it sounds like the winner to me.

Also: 3D?! What the f*ck are you on about?

Wait... so you liked Heavy Rain? A game with so many plot flaws that if it was a movie or book it would be laughed out of the theatre or thrown in the trash. A game that only survives because gamers are soo used to no story at all that they are thick enough to think that Heavy Rain's is actually good...

Sorry, you just lost any and all credibility you may ever have had.
And no, Mass Effect is fucking awesome. Mass Effect 2 is not nearly as good but still decent.
Wow I see hate for Heavy Rain from you alot...

OT: ME isnt overhyped the game was great and the dialogue made it intresting.

First, let me start off by saying that Dragon Age: Origins to me was a boring Lord of the Rings knock off that has been done a billion times before. Second, I love Mass Effect 1 and 2 even though 2 gets boring when you can get literally all of the achievements in one go. Now onto the point, there are games that we know we'll like when we see them and games we'll hate despite "good reviews", for me that was Borderlands, then I played Borderlands and realized it was Fallout 3 rip off with multiplayer, and that amused me greatly, for you it seems this might be the Mass Effect games.
