Hence why when I play BLOPS, I just play (Team) Deathmatch or Wager matches. I had an experience like that in MW2, one of the reasons why I stopped playing that game. Luckily, BLOPS' Wager matches are tons and tons of fun. Even the players on them seem friendlier.

'Properly' is in the eye of the beholder. It's just a problem with multiplayer. Maybe if you could filter playstyle everyone would be happier.
Not in this instance it's not.

If all you want to do is shoot people, play Deathmatch, or Team Deathmatch. That's what they're there for.

If you play a mode like Demolition, you are fully, justifiably expected to play with the intent of seeing your bomb reach its destination and explode.

If you aren't playing that way, then you are playing the wrong way.
People play however they want to play. Again, eye of the beholder. If they think capture the flag is for killing, then it's 'right' to them.

Good day sir.
With respect, if they think capture the flag is for killing, then they're mistaken. This isn't subject to interpretation; the purpose of Capture the Flag is, unarguably, to capture the flag.

Certainly killing is an integral part of that; you must kill those who try to stop you from taking their flag, you must kill those who try to take your flag; but these kills are all in service to the greater objective.

People play however they want to play, this is true; and if they want to play Deathmatch, then they should play Deathmatch. Otherwise, they are needlessly & pointlessly tainting the experience for others, which is most certainly not the 'right' way to play.
While I agree that it's irritating, I don't think it's entirely fair to blame the players. As I understand it, a major reason that people do this sort of thing is that it's easier to build killstreaks in objective based rounds - basically because people like you aren't paying attention to killing so much. So the real problem here is that the mechanics of CoD are structured in such a way as to encourage trophy/achievement/stat/point/prestige whore types to ruin the objective focus. It's unfortunate, but it's just a consequence of decisions made in design - they liked the feeling of power that killstreaks engender, so they put up with the flip side (this, and the 'pound the noobs' mentality it also fosters).

Or maybe they just didn't really think it through, and it was too expensive to change when they realized. Eh, who knows - CoD is what it is, man...

And that's why I never play anything objective based without a full team of friends. Capture the Flag goes from clusterfuck to a beautifully orchestrated 2 rounds of pure rape. When the other team ragequits halfway through round one because you have 15 flags capped, you know you're doing it right.
No, you're doing it wrong - at least in the sense that behaviour like this is why there's such a steep barrier to entry into online games, and why people stop playing them early. No one like getting baseraped, and baseraping gets really old pretty fast too. This is bad for everyone, because it means less support for the title and less people to have fun shooting at/with.

Baserape? As in camping right outside of their base and killing them the second the pop out? I would spit in disgust, but I don't feel like cleaning the floor.

It was 4v4, one of us ran the flag while the rest set up outside of our base to keep the other team out and our flag carrier safe.

I see nothing wrong with having a bit of strategy in an objective based game type.
Okay, 4v4 is a bit different to what I was picturing - I'm just in from the Killzones of Helghan, you see, and the scourge of our 12v12 is squads of 8-9 guys flooding into one side and crawling right in the doors of our bases to kill us... For rounds that typically take about 25 minutes to play through. The horror... the horror...

Whoa, little flashback there. But yeah, strategy is fine, and teamwork is the whole point of objective games. And if there's only 4 of you, then the other team should be able to organise to meet the challenge. If they can't then they deserve everything they get.

It depends. Some people just play to get kills, some people will selflessly play the objective and some will do a mix of both.

Sabotage is particularly bad for kill-whorers. I remember playing MW2 Sabotage and it took me 19 minutes to win the game because my entire team were just sitting back playing Team Deathmatch rather than covering me and helping me get to the bomb site.

I say people can play how they like, but I still get irritated by people who completely ignore flags/bomb sites.

i dont mean to offend, but whenever i see you post your profile picture makes me think of you as condescending, even though i agree with you most of the time and your posts alone dont generate this impression. what is that a picture of anyway? seems really familiar but i can't put my finger on it. but yeah i agree completely. i understand what you mean though, and it is kind of hard to tell whether someone is enjoying the game if they take it so seriously that they swear someone out for doing what they are supposed to in that game type.

short answer, yes some do but far too many do not. thats why i only play local with my friends when they come over, so we can dick around and nobody cares.

I play it properly for the thrill of planting the bomb under fire then standing there shiting myself wondering if it's gona blow or get disarmed.

I was in the same situation as your friend. I disarmed a bomb, winning the round for my team, only to be verbally raped by every person in the game, even my own team for doing so. That was on MW2 which I have't played in a while, but from what I've played on BLOPS people are pretty good on there.

My mate was playing COD:BLOPS in Demolition, and his team was just focusing on kills, rather than even try to plant the bomb.

At one point, one teammate was lying next to his care package, he just stayed there for like a minute, didn't try to claim it. My friend went and nicked it, at which point the guy in question sent him a voice message, roughly along the lines of " Fuck you, get your own fucking care packages, and stop planting the bomb we're trying to lose this round so we can play again." (I removed about 3/4 of the swearing from that.)

So I ask, does anyone actually play COD these days to enjoy the game? Or is it all just kill-whoring and point farming crybabies now?

Also, feel free to share your own stories of annoying/pathetic players online.
the only reason i kill whore in object games is if i have teamates who can handle themselfs pretty well that me not guarding them doesnt make a diffrence

i hate when im the only one guarding the bomb or taking and returning flags it pisses me off

Ahh, CoD. Do I play properly? Usually, I do, but there are just sometimes when people are in a corner so perfectly that I can't help running up and standing in front of them.

I think I need help. :(

I usually play Team Deathmatch, so I never really notice anyone "not playing properly", since it's all about kills in that gametype.

You mean are they trying to plant the bomb and not play with a hacked controller because they don't think they're pro?

I am probably one of the few gamers who doesn't try for kills. But then again, I'm always on Reach.

I find that a difficult argument to accept. The word properly is highly subjective, but I see it as "Playing the mode correctly."

I would have fun in say, CTF, by actually focusing on getting the flag and using strategy. But when 90% of the players in the room just sit by their flags and wait for easy targets, that just seems sad, and defeats the purpose of the game.
Yeah, I'm with you on this one. The whole "Having fun = Playing properly" argument doesn't stack up when everyone else is trying to play as the game designers intended, and a few idiots are having their own version of fun by spoiling the game.

You want to sit there kill-whoring, there are game modes for that. If you want to play something which requires more team co-ordination and tactics, you should be able to do that without the idiots just spoiling.

I'm an old-ass gamer and I thought I'd seen it all until I started playing CoD BLOPS online on the 360. I usually stick to PC for FPS's but my bro plays 360 annnyway.

After some bad experiences I restricted myself to team tactical as the dude/tard ratio seemed better. Then I got stuck in a 'round with some suckers called Karma something or other and the chat spam went like this:

"Domination on Nuketown, leave the bombs and spawn trap"

"I can't kill <$player>, right everyone submit loads of complaints against him between rounds"

This was in a 4v4 tactical match, so I stuck out a few minutes of watching them fuck up a spawn trap (this is just organised spawncamping AFAIK) and planted one of the bases.

Cue a torrent of abuse from this bunch of pubeless fucktards because they only want kills/killstreaks and a bunch of threats to submit complaints until I got a live ban. I tried to explain that what they were doing is far more likely to get a ban and the multiple complaints they were submitting amounts to nothing more than bullying.

Never seen this level of vindictive bullshit on other games. Usually in a PC game you can get a bit of abuse then leave the server/game and its done. These internet super-heroes will carry shit on and send crap to your live account long after the actual event, they think they are anonymous and untouchable.

The only way I can think to combat it is to build yourself a friends list of any non-tards you come across and play as many private matches as you can.

Are you kidding me? When my friends dragged me into MW2 matches and that game mode came up NO ONE went for the bomb on either side it was just kill the enemy team. Black Ops has some fun gameplay but as per MW2 anything outside DM,TDM,CTF is just dumb.

Bad Company 2 has a lot more interesting game modes and as long as you don't get an entire team of bush wookies chances are they'll do the objective.

I wish it was that simple for me. I usualy play Cod just for the kills on Sabotage or Domination because I can't stand the spawn system on TDM. The number of times where I spawn, run to the enemy teams spawn area, and when I get there they are already spawning back where I started from. Turn around, run back, repeat for 10 minutes. Or I should say 5 minutes because the score limit is so low.

In Sabotage, each team gets a designated side, adding some organization to the game that makes the game so much more enjoyable. It also makes sniping a credible play style, without people spawning behind you every 30 seconds.

I usually only play team deathmatch, so I do only go for kills. When I do play other game-types I go for the objective, if only to ensure the other team doesn't win.

This a million times. If people are playing a way you don't like and the rest of them are having fun the way they are playing, then you are the one doing it wrong.

I play the game to win. To do that, you must win the game. Most of my friends play the same way. Stay strong and tell the kill harvesters to go to hell. I personally try extra hard to win the game when people are doing this on my team to piss them off.
