Does using the dodge roll in SSBB make you cheap? and other questionably cheap techniques.

The dodge is hardly a cheap move. Much of the joy to be found in smash brothers lies in the relative ease with which any move is executed. When players have so many excellent offensive and defensive options, the game is often one of second or third intention attacks. One cannot endlessly chain a dodge roll and remain invulnerable forever, and it is a move that all characters have access to.

Were I to call out a feature that seriously needs to go it's the final smash. It removes any pretense of skill from a kill. Hell, in some cases death is inevitable if they execute the attack.

Yeah, they just suck. Some moves are kind of cheap, like I refrain from using Marth's counterattack unless I'm in a dire situation, and I don't spam Pit's stupid side-B move, but rolling is an evasive move that everyone can do. Pretty much the only evasive move in the game. Nothing wrong with that.

Isn't rolling kind of basic? It's not exactly hard to do.

However, the following things are cheap (yes I'm a hypocrite):

-all items
-game modes that aren't stock (time and coin are all about lucky hits)
-freaking final smashes. One of the worst additions to the game, IMO. It didn't just unbalance the game, it toppled it over.
-tripping. Whoever added that should be shot.
-almost every stage that isn't final destination/battlefield. They all randomly and unfairly kill you in some way.
-chain-grabbing.
-using the same move more three or more times in a row.
-scrolling stages.
-handicaps
-Ike. He is ridiculously overpowered, and can kill lighter characters at 40% with a non-smash move. 'Nuff said.
-Pit. His recovery is like 500 feet, he can block projectiles, and if he traps you with his side-b move, you're a goner.

Yeah, I'll stop. Don't get me started on why I think Melee is a better game, though. If I start on that, watch out.
Oh god, let's not start this discussion.

No.

It is actually a favorite technique of mine to just dodge and smash until my opponent dies. There is no problem with it. I have friends who do it as well, and we are all capable of dodging and countering dodges. It's not hard to beat if you know what you're doing.

Clearly they don't know what they're doing well enough.

I agree with all of this.

i dont play smash bros

but generally when you are using the "anything to win" policy pisses people off including me
I'm not a fan of playing with people who do anything to win.

Mainly because the shit they do is boring and repetitve.

Sure you win everytime but it is like watching a chess game that has the same moveset, same players, and same outcome. It gets boring pretty fast.

But to each their own.

I remember when me and my best mate in primary school used to play fucktons of SSB melee, dodging was a vital part of combat.

Martyrdom/Last Stand in COD4 are terribly cheap and I can't believe people still use them... What's worse is they are still a feature in MW2... I think

If the move is available in the game and you can pull it off it isn't "cheap". Now, "spamming" the same move over and over is kind of stupid and does get annoying. At least mix it up a little but go ahead and use what works for you.

It's not cheating, it's using an easily-learnt, highly effective defensive maneuvre. I've taught quite a few friends and family members how to play Smash Bros., and THE first thing I teach them, beyond the basic controls, is that dodging and shielding like hell are essential. Unless you're Lucario, you never want to be hit. Ever. And even with Lucario you want to avoid it.

It's just as cheap as the attack buttons.

Though seriously, if your friends get honestly mad at you over a video game, then they're just immature chodes. It's just some game.

The dodge roll is fundamental, but there should be a rule against discussing cheapness.

If its in the game on purpose, its meant to be used. nothing more to it.

Besides, A quick thump of Ike's Sword or Charge attack and it doesn't matter if they Dodge Roll.

I'm playing SSBB with friends, I keep winning, mostly because I use my shield and dodge rolls. My friends start yelling how I'm a fag, gay, an asshole, etc... because I use those moves, but I see nothing wrong with it, and I think they just suck because they don't use them.

Who's right, am I an ass for using the dodge roll, or do they just suck?

And to keep a discussion going, what else do you use that others call cheap, or vice versa?
No, your friends just suck, it's a more than valid technique, and if the game shows it in the tutorial AND allows it, it is neither cheap nor does it make you a gay fag or whatever. It only makes you a winner.

Too bad we are always bashed, cuz I don't own it, but can totally own my friend who owns it.
OWN! EVERYTHING! ALWAYS!;)

In fighting games in general, the only thing I think is cheap, is spamming one or two moves all the time.

I've heard people playing brawl tournaments complaining about how bad you are in every possible way for using items.

I don't get the people playing the game "professionaly". They just make it more boring by setting up these rules about what's bad and what's good.

You're friends are complete idiots.

If they can't master the simplified dodge and shield in Brawl they really are beyond hope. Put them against a Melee player who can wall jump, air dodge, dash and reflect and they'd crap their pants.

Honestly, they are just being whiney little bitches, tell them to learn the moves and stop being morons.
