Donnie Darko is a film everyone must watch.

I didn't regret watching it. But after hearing everyone offer it massive praise, I feel it didn't quite live up to that. For me, it was a toned down version of the Machinist, which I find a far superior movie.

But if you watch it, DON'T watch the director's cut edition.
I love the film! What wrong with the director's cut though?

Didnt enjoy it at all. It was way too pretentious, more of a fanboy film for goths and emos. People compared it to David Lynch films as well... no no no

Don't tell me what to do. I'm pretty sure I don't need to see it. I was still surviving without seeing it.
It is however highly recommended. It's basically the movie that sums up adolescence in this decade (Sod the "noughties" this decade is the double-Os. How did nobody realise that til now) Nothing else I've seen has the same balance of unease, rage, intellectual confusion and just general sense that all is not right with the world that you get hitting puberty post-9/11.

Or maybe I just had really grim teenage years. But judging from the films popularity it's not just me.

Nope

He wakes up on a spot on a hill which he had timetravelled from into this alternate, temporary reality. He comes to realise this reality is unsustainable, and travels back into the real timeline, where he is killed by the thing he narrowly missed in the alternate timeline which caused the break-off in continuity, restoring the balance

Awesome film, though

Why not? Does it have a crappy alternate ending?
It adds scenes that were removed due to the fact that they spoiled suprised as the end of the movie.

Damnit, I saw this movie but didn't see much of it as I ended up having sex.

Edit: and never got around to rewatching it.

the sad thing is that somebody thought it was a good idea to do a sequel...

why do you say that? i watched the director's cut and all i noticed were the book exerts between some scenes, and i actually enjoyed those. they did foreshadow alot, potentially ruining some of the story, but it was a story i already knew...:p

Donnie Darko: One of the movies that is the most overrated by viewers between the ages of 14-21. It's a good movie, for sure, but it isn't a 'must watch' and the theory of time travel presented just feels dumbed down.

If you want to watch a complex movie about time travel, check out Primer. That will make your mind explode.

It's an all right film.

It's a non-conventional time travel movie. Oh, and Patrick Swayze. He's really awesome too, especially when Donnie nails him at the student assembly.

I'd recommend it.

it seems enough people have accurately portrayed the same level of dislike I have for the movie, so I won't try to repeat much.

the movie only seems to appeal to those teens filled with angst, or feelings of the like. those were the only people I have run into that say they enjoy the movie.

To put it simply, I was not impressed.

I found it to be okay. I think. But, to be honest, a couple of years on, I can't remember much about it, so it obviously didn't leave a huge impression on me. And the fact that Richard Kelly's subsequent output has been so poor doesn't encourage me to revisit it.

Well that's just silly

Also, while we're on the "Spoiling Plots in Films" topic, can everyone stop giving away the ending to The Sixth Sense? You've all already ruined it for me (humans, btw, not Escapist members)

It was certainly a good, and trippy, movie.

Shame that the sequel was garbage though...

This film F~?king rules. If you have never seen it watch it. And if you have seen it give me your opinion. I have it on dvd but I think all parts are on youtube.
Yes 'tis quite a good film. I like how the meaning of everything is really ambiguous and they don't outright tell you everything, they leave it up to interpretation. The cinematography was also extremley well-done.
