I didn't get what was so amazing about this film. Just another low-ish budget American movie made by some director trying to prove how arty he is.

Give me Fight Club or another creative film with meaning anyday.

Donnie Darko = unique

unique ≠ good

Donnie Darko ≠ good

I watched it after I got tired of people asking "Have you seen Donnie Darko?"
I reply, "No."
They follow with (everytime), "Oh My God! You are sooo missing out!"
So I watched it and all I have to say is meh. In my opinion it was more of 'okay', not horrible but not good either.

people told me how amazing it was and how much i'd love it and how i'd have to see it ten times before i understood it, but i watched it with my friend there a few weeks ago and i was really unimpressed...
dunno, i like movies that make you think and really mess with your head, and i was promised donnie darko would be one, but it just did nothing for me...
also, hated the main character, he really got on my nerves, so i had no sympathy for him at any point in the film...

just not my movie, i'm afraid.

Did you just see it now? It's a tad old...

OT:I agree completely. An amazing movie that I watched over 5 times. That's amazing for me since I seldom watch a movie twice over within a years time.

It confused the crap out of me, and I hated it while I watched it, but afterwards I inexplicably started to love it, so I watched it again, and it made a hell of a lot more sense to me...

I didn't like this movie at all. It really surprised me as I am very devoted to movies and gamed in general and heared very good reviews by frinds and guys whose opinion work for me.

I found the best scene to be the one in the cinema and solely because of the movie they watched. Didn't like the characters and the story was boring as hell. But maybe I'm missing something? Anything vital I'd need to know or register before watching Darko again?

Utterly Fabulous.
Coincidentally Jake Gylenhaal is my one hetero man-crush.
don't worry everyone gets one. Mines DiCaprio

Anyway I loved Donnie Darko; took a few goes through to get it. Sound track is amazing as well

I was thinking of Donny Brasco, so I was confused. But I gotcha now.

This movie is decent, but it doesn't deserve all the praise it gets. It's a weird movie, and while weird movies are great, they're often mistaken for deep movies, and that's just not the case here.

This is a good movie, but it's not saying anything particularly profound.
You took the words right out of my mouth. It is a good movie though.

Also if your avatar is from the movie I think it is from (Citizen Kane?), THAT is an excellent film.

I thought it was more overrated than good.

If you need to kill some time, sure, but there are many better movies out there.

I love the film! What wrong with the director's cut though?
It's worse than the original cut

[sub]So don't expect much from "The Box" when it comes out[/sub]

I watched it when I was a bit younger, so I'll have to watch it again at some point, I didn't really understand it very well.

why do you say that? i watched the director's cut and all i noticed were the book exerts between some scenes, and i actually enjoyed those. they did foreshadow alot, potentially ruining some of the story, but it was a story i already knew...:p
If you are going to watch for the first time, the director's cut is a bad idea.

Gives a bad impression of the film. If you already watched it, then no problem.

There are some parts that feels completely out of place. Like in that scene that Donnie goes with Gretchen to the old lady's house (not in the final, like in the middle), Donnie hears a voice saying "write her a letter". If you are seeing it for the first time, you are likely to say "WTF". Also the voice is supposed to be Frank's, but sounds like me or you trying to sound like Frank, in other words, crappy.

And that's only 1 thing, there are a lot of stuff there that ruins what makes D.D. special.

I watched Donnie Darko and was very meh about it but I thought that Richard Kelly could possibly be an amazing writer/director. How wrong I was Southland Tales is a cinematic abortion and is the absoulte worst movie i've ever seen. No exaggeration. The Box was a bit better but only when compared to Southland Tales which doesn't make it automatically good.
