Don't Expect Deathmatch in BioShock Infinite

Irrational Games doesn't have much to say about multiplayer at the moment, so don't be surprised if BioShock Infinite lacks deathmatch.

With just last week [http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-Infinite-Pc/dp/B002I0KOSI], gamers are still wondering exactly what the game will include. New plasmids? Better A.I.? Incredible new environments? Yes, most likely, but one thing that probably won't be in the game is a multiplayer mode.

That is, unless Ken Levine and the rest of his Irrational Games team come up with one that works. However, according to Levine, Irrational only wants to design games with features that make sense, not ones that are tacked on because the industry mandates they should be. As for now, Levine told Kotaku: "We have not made any determinations about multiplayer."

He continued: "I will say that we experiment with things, but for us we are never interested in making a multiplayer mode you could just play in some other game. Because, A) that's not creatively interesting and B), financially, you're wasting your time. They're going to go play Call of Duty [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282345447&sr=8-1]."

Levine's game design philosophy seems to revolve around finding something new to show people or the exploration of a unique gameplay aspect. He says Irrational would do a multiplayer mode for Infinite: "If we do something new - if we do something like Left 4 Dead [http://www.amazon.com/Left-4-Dead-2-Xbox-360/dp/B002BRZ852/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282350275&sr=8-3] that has something new to say." Without that basis, he doesn't think developers should waste their time.

Of course it's hard to agree with the idea that a multiplayer mode should be forcefully shoved into anything. The way Irrational tells it [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102897-Levine-BioShock-Was-Never-Just-About-Rapture], multiplayer just doesn't seem to fit into BioShock's goals. The rub is that BioShock Infinite's setting is just so cool, it'd be great to see something multiplayer oriented that uses it with the direction of "saying something new," but Irrational appears to be fine leaving multiplayer to other studios.

I had good fun with Bioshock 2's multi. Not enough online shooters let you lightning and fire at other players. Even though it was a different dev team.

Shame it's already dying out...As predicted.

He's right. Don't waste dev resources on it unless they can do something intriguing and new.

And hearing this news I'm feeling quite happy inside. Finally a game that will hae multiplayer as more of a secondary feature, if at all. For me a multiplayer is more of an extra to a game (unless that game is only multiplayer eg: TF2) so to read that they will focus on single player was like sex for my eyes.

Thank god!!! someone with common sense. I'm getting sick of games wasting time and money on a mulitplayer mode when it doesn't need one.

How can they have new plasmids? The Sea slug hasn't been discovered yet in the time frame.
...

Anyone else bothered a bit?
If they had left the origin a mystery, maybe it could make sense.

EDIT: Also, Ken Levine seems like a boss.

Or the alternative, tacking on a cheap and dirty campaign so that people who don't play multiplayer but it (like some of the Halo games from what I've heard).

But yeah, this is good news. Interesting that it sounds like they're try and see if they can do it, but if they can't then they won't waste extra time on it. Very good news.

Presumably, it's some other mechanic, like a hyper-chemical or something? okay, I have no idea, but I don't think they literally mean plasmids in this game.

I appreciated BioShock 2's multiplayer, and I'm a little sad to see it gone. But if the single player delivers, that's all I'll need. Mainly because I suck at multiplayer modes on games.

I'm glad that developers are finally taking a stand and not adding a tacked on multiplayer mode to single player games. It just wastes time and money that could be used to improve the main campaign.

I'm glad, that Game teams do not feel as though they have to tack on some half-bake multiplayer to make a good game.

I mean, what the point? They're not adding anything new, just the old modes and same old mess.

It always astounds me to see the number of people who won't buy a game unless it has a multiplayer component, yet almost every game with it is virtually dead after a couple of months anyway because they've moved on to the next thing.

The title was kind of odd. As I was clicking the link, I was thinking, "What, so are we still getting Capture the Flag?"
Still, good job Irrational. Never have I felt multiplayer was more tacked on than on Bioshock 2. It kind of felt like having a popsicle after a lobster dinner.

ADAM was what let them fuck with their DNA. Just because this is one way for them to fuck with their DNA doesn't mean it's the only way. And frankly, the sea slug idea was only contrived to make the little sisters dilemma make any sense. With no little sisters, I'm sure they'll be able to come up with some other way to fuck with DNA.

THANK. GOD. Tacked-on multiplayer has to go, better to focus your attention on the part of the game that people will pay and make up for the potential loss of revue from used games with some knockoff of Project Ten Dollar.

Good, I couldn't stand the multiplayer in Bioshock 2. That was the most tacked on multiplayer I've ever seem.

Eh, Bioshock 2's multiplayer was a decent idea that ended up being badly implemented. I can't say that I'm sad to see it go.
