I've met a lot of soldiers. Many of them were idiots. Perhaps even most of them.

Not all of them though.

Everyone is a complete idiot.

The soldiers are.

The politicians are.

And most importantly, this person is an idiot.

There, it is done. Everyone is now an idiot, including me. Can we please do a mosh-pit now instead of arguing about the motivations of people most of us don't know?

I would prefer to be called "specially impaired", thank you very much!

It's their job, and it's their orders - there's not much they can do about it.

I doubt there's many of them that sign on to participate in a war with questionable legality.

Same could be said with most everyone.

AT LEAST 90% of any population are idiots who think they have a brain wave that matters at all.

Soldiers often come from those who didn't do too well in high school, so yes, while a lot of them might not be exactly...geniuses...there will always be at least a few men or women in a group that ARE intelligent, good people.

Other reasons people may join armed forces:
-Uniform
-Atmosphere
-Personal fantasy
-Needed a job
-Needed simple money

And for those that are really jaded or hopeless enough to think against this:

-There ARE righteous and goodhearted people that join because they want to help. Some people ARE noble. They are usually just blotted out by the scum of the earth who get by farther by being selfish and self-serving.

My current girlfriend is a damn good painter, and while she's been given offers to expand her work and make some big money, she has refused because she said, "While I like painting, I find that it will not deliver anything to society that already has not been delivered."

She wishes to join Navy SEALS or The USMC. And I will tell you that she is a good, independent, hard working, intelligent human being.

Like every career and job, you're going to meet a few who are idiots. Everyone who has joined the military know, or should know, they are forfeiting a lot of their freedom and will to serve, so to say that they are "mindless automatons with no will of their own" is a given when it comes to taking orders and completing it. Beyond that however such statement becomes invalid as soldiers do have a mind and will when it comes to how to make theirs and their unit's life and mission easier.

As for whether or not soldiers do any self-reflection on their role, their task, their actions. They do, but they can't do it too much or seriously as it is detrimental of what they must do. How does a human cope if they have to kill other humans and they must kill? Some don't think about it. Some demonize their enemies as being lesser than humans. Some rationalize it such as "kill or be killed". So long as the soldier is not hesitant to pull that trigger when he or she must, whatever works.

Indeed they fight because they are ordered to fight. That's how the military works. The military is an arm of the government, it should not have a mind of its own beyond having a mind of how to punch faster, smarter, and take blows from other arms. The military is not, and should not, be an institution that can direct its own action and policy, and that includes the soldiers within the military.

As for the reasons why people would join, some of the reasons that I know:

1. Stable pay or for education benefits
2. To be in the military. They like the military (when they joined).
3. Explore the world, being part of something big, being part of an institution that is changing the world. Basically making their life bigger and fulfilling.
4. They couldn't think of anything else. This is good if the person didn't have much opportunities to begin at no fault of their own. This is bad if the person didn't have any choice by their own faults.
5. To serve the host nation. I'm serious. Some join because they somehow feel obligated to serve.
6. Family-oriented reasons: family tradition, family or relative killed or wounded in war or attack.
7. Career outside of military. Some join to get experience for another career in the future. Some might join intelligence or military police to go into law enforcement. Some might want to join aviation to become a civilian pilot. Some might join to gain leadership skills for business administration.
8. Character Building. Some join to empower themselves, whether to prove themselves that they're not physically weak, courage-deprived, etc.

I have yet to meet ANYONE who has joined because they want to kill or shoot weapons.

I completely disagree and I am offended at the notion of calling Soldiers Idiots. You may not like the war they fight in but they fight for nations so we do not have too they deserve nothing but our respect. they are people who risk there live everyday. Would you call the soldiers who fought for England, America and Russia stupid because they were fighting the nazis and giving europe. Also sometimes soldiers are dragged into combat for example VIetnam the draft are they Idiots because they got drafted into Vietnam. Soldiers are people willing to fight and die for there country they are brave men and women. SO please show them the respect they deserve.

I was reading the One Piece manga recently, and a certain quote got to me. A soldier had said that "Doesn't all the people losing their lives look like complete idiots?"

That really got to me. Don't soldiers ever stop to think what there fighting for? I understand the "protect their love ones" argument, but were their love ones in danger to begin with? It just seems most soldiers across the world go and die and kill because someone had told them too.

Thoughts?
Some people are just born soldiers. It's been that way forever. Some people can play music, some people are good at math, some make good politicians. And some are good at fighting. I don't see my self doing anything else.

Could you jot down the location of enemies on a coordinates grid? while being shot at? Could you organize 10 guys all with different personalities to work as one, and watch each others backs? Could you call an air strike danger close without getting everyone killed? Despite what people think, it's not like the video games. And it's not easy. You train for a week maybe 2 at a normal job. You train for months in the Army, Marines, etc. And it's for a good reason.

Not any more than you or I would be for doing that project that was detested in school, or listening to that teacher that was a complete jerk.

I don't care if you want to fight for what the government wants to fight for. It doesn't make you stupid, but it might make you look stupid depending on what the cause is.

The soldiers fight for our freedom. They take the freedom of a nation above their own lives. It's really a pretty heroic act if you ask me.
Except the countries fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan aren't. We invaded them, not the other way around. There hasn't been a war like that since World War 2, those soldiers were heroes. As were those drafted into Vietnam against their will.

I have considered joining the Armed Forces, but my primary reason for not doing so is that I will not die "For my country" when there is absolutely no reason for me to do so. Hell a soldier was the first job I wanted.

I absolutely love your avatar.

OT: I dunno, a lot of schools these days add some kind of nationalist ritual (like saying the pledge of allegiance) into the elementary routine.

Or hell, maybe some of them wanted a chance to shoot things (and get shot at, and get bombed, and shelled, etc. etc.) without being arrested.
People need to actively resist the activist rituals to not be brainwashed. For example, whenever we do the pledge in my second period classes, I don't speak, and I don't raise my hand. I turn in the opposing direction and stand at rest

Not at all. I am thinking of joining the army for a few reasons. My reasons are:
1. More exciting than most jobs
2. Pretty good pay (if you're an officer)
3. Less school to train for the job, it's like a 9 month course then you get deployed.
4. I'm not afraid to die

Someone has to do it. Also, I think lots of squaddies join because they either failed at everything else or can't see another option.
