No, they don't, that's what they want you to think.
They are -NOT- fighting for my Freedom, the only one who fights for my freedom is myself.
Hate to break it to you, but soldiers HAVE fought for your freedom. If you're an American (which I'm assuming you are) there are two instances where you did NOT fight for your own freedom. That would be the War of Independence and World War Two.

While I agree that the Soldier is but the mindless sheep that has been herded by the shepherd (Politicians), if you've talked to any soldier in our days, you'll see that most of them are amazingly stupid.
How many soldiers have you talked to? Most of them are quite intelligent, they just act dumb because they have to deal with a shit ton more stress than you do or will ever have to.

I absolutely love your avatar.

OT: I dunno, a lot of schools these days add some kind of nationalist ritual (like saying the pledge of allegiance) into the elementary routine.

Or hell, maybe some of them wanted a chance to shoot things (and get shot at, and get bombed, and shelled, etc. etc.) without being arrested.
People need to actively resist the activist rituals to not be brainwashed. For example, whenever we do the pledge in my second period classes, I don't speak, and I don't raise my hand. I turn in the opposing direction and stand at rest
You're kidding me right? You don't need to pull such thing so long as your mind is resistant to it. I've done the pledge so many times yet never took it seriously. It's silly for you to do that. Most likely, your fellow peers aren't taking it seriously either.

I often think becoming a soldier as announcing you cant do anything else and intend to show off for your country and milk it when you get back. It's also kind of annoying to hear people say how I'm apparently a horrible person for replying "No" to the question "Are you joining the army?". I'm 15 FFS!!!

This thread makes me feel so much better about myself, seeing some of the asinine statements in it. Yet, at the same time, I can't help but feel pity for those same people. Soldiers really aren't different from society at large. You have your brainiac nerds, your clueless jocks, your douchebags, and your pretty swell guys.

And I don't know about other countries, but the pay in the American military isn't that great. You make some extra if you go overseas, but it's still nothing to gloat about, especially how much civilian contractors get paid. Sergeants and below, the bulk of the military, make a wage that would put them below the poverty line of America. If you enlist because of the wages, you'll be sadly disappointed.

I'm pretty disgusted at this topic really. I know a number of soldiers personally and to be quite honest. They're probably smarter than you.

I don't know what it's like where ever you come from but in Australia it's actually difficult to get in to the Defence Force.

There's psychological, physical and mental health, aptitude, and fitness tests as well as criminal record checks.

Punched a guy in the face once in a bar? Got charged with assault? You're never getting in to the ADF.

I understand that you are allowed to have your own views and are probably not going to be effected by mine so I'll try to not go on for any longer but regardless of what you may think about war, the defence forces, politics and soldiers. You cannot judge an entire group of people without meeting all of them.
So don't try.

I completely disagree and I am offended at the notion of calling Soldiers Idiots. You may not like the war they fight in but they fight for nations so we do not have too they deserve nothing but our respect. they are people who risk there live everyday. Would you call the soldiers who fought for England, America and Russia stupid because they were fighting the nazis and giving europe. Also sometimes soldiers are dragged into combat for example VIetnam the draft are they Idiots because they got drafted into Vietnam. Soldiers are people willing to fight and die for there country they are brave men and women. SO please show them the respect they deserve.
QFT.

If you've actually gone out and fucking fought, then you can make threads like this.

Yes, because toppling a foreign government and causing a great deal of instability in said area is obviously how you protect freedom.

I'm signing up for the Air Force. I'm doing it as a career, and the benefits are ridiculously good if you're an officer. That's my reason, and I'm going to assume it's a pretty good reason.
I've heard some of the Marines join it just for the thrill of it, which also makes sense.
Others join it so they can have their college fee paid. Lots of reasons.

While I'll agree that soldiers deserve our respect, I'm also going to agree with the man who told you to stop talking. You just compared the current conflict we're in to Vietnam. Which, combat-wise, I would be fine with because it is Guerilla warfare, just in the desert.
But no. You just had to mention the draft. We don't draft people into our military. Anyone who is in the military knows what they're getting.

Also, you're somewhat acting like America was the entire reason the Allies won in WWII. That just pisses me off for some reason.

Just for the sake of not driving my reputation into the ground, you do realize that the link in my comment links anyone who presses it to their own profile, right?

Most non-com soldiers come from poor backgrounds. It's a way to travel and to get skills, to get out of where they live.

Considering that in 2 months I'll be drafted as an Israeli soldier, and we don't fight for a government 'cause'. The only cause we fight for is to protect ourselves against our enemies who surround and utnumber us, and want to kill every man, women, and child here, so no, I don't consider us to be stupid.

No. Of course they think about what they're fighting for, but when you've been shipped off to a distant country where half of the populace wants you dead, what are YOU going to do?

I was reading the One Piece manga recently, and a certain quote got to me. A soldier had said that "Doesn't all the people losing their lives look like complete idiots?"

That really got to me. Don't soldiers ever stop to think what there fighting for? I understand the "protect their love ones" argument, but were their love ones in danger to begin with? It just seems most soldiers across the world go and die and kill because someone had told them too.

Thoughts?
Some people are just born soldiers. It's been that way forever. Some people can play music, some people are good at math, some make good politicians. And some are good at fighting. I don't see my self doing anything else.

Could you jot down the location of enemies on a coordinates grid? while being shot at? Could you organize 10 guys all with different personalities to work as one, and watch each others backs? Could you call an air strike danger close without getting everyone killed? Despite what people think, it's not like the video games. And it's not easy. You train for a week maybe 2 at a normal job. You train for months in the Army, Marines, etc. And it's for a good reason.
The training isn't to make you skilled. Its to make sure you'll follow orders.

That's true in Basic Training. But beyond that, all training is to improve your skills. Basic Training is meant to break the individual apart and reconstruct him or her to be in line with everyone else in the military. After that, there's no need to conduct such training. All the training that follows is indeed for training. Not to take orders. You're expected to take orders by then.
