Aaaah history.
I too love it.
Unfortunately, my family history's patchier than a Goodwill blanket...
Same here my friend, from what I can tell my great-great grandfather's cousin died in 1901, resurected as a zombie, then in 1906, 1911 and 1916 he participated in the census and then joined the army in World War 1 and was sent back because he was 'aged.' Then he just disappears...

I still don't know what the hell happened there...

Stating that you're into history because you like Roman empire, WWI, WWII and Napoleon is something on the same level as saying that you're into "music arts" because of Britney, Michael Jackson or whatever...

only two comments that stand out of the crowd are of SimuLord and Oskamunda...

Although, I do admit, thats better than nothing. So keep going, perhaps You will find something there. Just don?t confuse what you learn in school or on Discovery channel with History.

Peace.

I don't mind you history buffs having your classes, but I wish it was an option, because I'm more of a math/science guy, and I can't keep all that historical stuff straight in my head.
Beeing a historian I totaly agree, there should be an option.

Thing is - you dont need to.(keep the stuff) Thats wikipedias job :D

I enjoy learning about history, I dabble in everything from military history, national history, early human history, evolutionary history... so pretty much history in the most general of terms.

I find myself studying a lot of legal history for school right now. I just wish that people didn't have to invent a new wording system every time they make a new law or make a major case decision, it's just plain confusing sometimes. Then there's the Latin... Thankfully that's pretty limited nowadays.

Take the plunge, if you love military history you should consider doing HMI (Historical Military Interpretations.) http://www.hmisite.com/index.htm --> Link is for units mainly in Pennsylvania, meant as a jumping point if you want to look into it.

I love history- I am going to University now to get certified to teach it, just to admit my bias.

EDIT: Wow, this whole post is a plug.

Needless to say, I loved Guns, Germs, and Steel. One of my favorite books.
A friend of mine told me that book was some wierd reimagining of history, on par with '1421'... I'll have to check it out now, because I'm starting to think that he didn't know what he was talking about because you seem to know your stuff.

Well, my first degree was in classical studies, so yes I love history. Looking back now, not something to get a degree in if you want to do something besides teach.

I feel the same way, I'm fascinated by what we as a species have managed to accomplish in over 5000 years of history (starting from the Egyptians), I still can't get over the fact that Nasa managed to achieve the Apollo 11 mission using the computing power of a pocket calculator. The wars also interest me a great deal, it shows us at our most genius.

I loved history at school, it was a shame that I dropped it really but Chemistry, Geography and Physics kind of go better together whereas History seemed like the kid that no-one liked and you were forced to be nice to

I love history, but I'm having an affair with Maths now that I have started my FSMQ course (it's a sort of A-level that you do if you do your GCSE exam early) .

But yes, I will always love history. I'm kind of an ideological and military historian, particularly the Peninsula War and the Russian Revolution (that's the ideological bit).

Hooray for history!

I love history, favorite period being the Middle Ages. Not as interested in the wars as much as the intricacies of feudalism and such.

For those who say history's useless...you have to know who you were to know you are.

i've always loved history, and i've always wanted to punch the faces of people who say it's a useless subject :/ i'd argue that it's about 20x more useful than calculus...
Care to explain.
Because I find it quite useless.
well, aside from the old cliche "those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it", there's simply the fact that it's easier to understand someone or something if you understand its past. e.g. outdated constructs like labor unions; modern annoyances like the EPA or the FDA; etc. understanding why things came to be, is, in my opinion, incredibly useful.

*edit* also, i like how the person above me put it: "You have to know who you were to know who you are."

I love history, but I'll admit that military history bores me to no end.
What I love is anthropological history, looking at people, culture, business, technology and the such. I love getting a sense of what it's like to live in other times, and I also love getting ideas from what people did in the past for what we could or should do for the present and future.
