Why is it that when people say they are fans of history, they invariably meant to say they are fans of military history or fans of historical unrest?

I think that engineering and religious history are so much more interesting...but they don't have guts flying around, do they? Given that you've already admitted your aim to take over the world, why don't you just admit that you're really a fan of violence and revolution?

For those of you are actually into history, rather than trying to find out which others of you are trying equally hard to appear "smart," check this book out:

No flying guts in engineering or religious history!?! Have I got news for you! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisition

I think I will just take that soapbox from you now...
You are right, there are plenty of examples horror and atrocity in all walks of life; I wasn't saying they aren't there, I was decrying this phenomenon:

"I am a student of history! I love it so! Hear me, as I regale you with only examples of military history."

Stating that you're into history because you like Roman empire, WWI, WWII and Napoleon is something on the same level as saying that you're into "music arts" because of Britney, Michael Jackson or whatever...

only two comments that stand out of the crowd are of SimuLord and Oskamunda...

Although, I do admit, thats better than nothing. So keep going, perhaps You will find something there. Just don?t confuse what you learn in school or on Discovery channel with History.

Peace.
dude... I said that my favorite periods in history are those eras, I know pretty much from the the raids by the pheonix ''empire'' from the horrors from WWI. The holdback of science by the church, and the masterful music by mozart and beethoven. I just love some parts of history, were humanity was tested to its limits, to see if we could survive the horrors of war or the rough living conditions back then. I think that that is impressive, our advancement from the old to the new times. History is about learning the future, to vision the future we must understand history.

I'm sort of the same. Ancient human history only has a few points of interest for me (mostly wars and stuff, i just love seeing how conflicts like that play out in different time periods).

what really fascinates me is the ancient ANCIENT times, where...hold on.
