You are far from alone my friend.
History is my drug...and like you, I focus quite a lot on the history of military technology and key battles. If you've never heard them, I suggest looking into Great Battles of the Ancient world. A huge lecture series by Prof. Garrett Fagan. You can probably easily find the lectures at your library and they are wonderful.

History is amazing, it's a shame no one ever learns from it though.

"Hey, you know what would be a great idea, guys? If we slowly eroded the middle class, so most of the population would be poor and we'd be rich. And they wouldn't be angry. At all."

Or...

"Let's have a land war in Asia!"

I hate history, it's all been done before.

But yeah, I like some history, history related to my tastes.
Military history, Technilogical history, cultural history and mythology are in my field of interest, but pretty much alll the rest kinda bores me.

History major here, so yeah...I'm a big fan of history. I've always been particularly interested in 20th century history, as the events which took place in that brief 100 year span have completely revolutionized society in an unprecedented fashion. However, I've always been partial to ancient history (although, as I discovered while studying ancient Rome, the amount of speculation involved can be a bit bothersome...), and the Middle Ages have always fascinated me as well.

Unfortunately, the majority of my historical knowledge is limited to European/Western society - Europe has always drawn me more than other places for whatever reason.

It looks like I'm the first person to post here that really disliked history in school. It was boring and the classroom smelt of piss.
Thanks for making me laugh, raz-taz.

I like ancient history, but the 1900s-y stuff, not so much.

I'm not much of a history nut, but I still find history intriguing. Not so much the wars, but rather the culture, philosophy and religion of various civilizations. I find it fascinating that there have been such a wide range of differing beliefs and ideas, not to mention that it gives a lot of food for thought and I like knowing things just for the sake of knowing.

Most people in my high school take Psychology in Senior Year because it's an easy class. I opted to take Medieval European History instead, because it interested me. It always brings up questions in my head like, "How would Europe have changed if Charles Martel hadn't held off the Arabs at the battle of Poitiers? Would the Islamic conquest extended throughout Europe, and would that mean European Society would be based around learning and culture instead of conquest?"

I love History. It's quite facinating, and it's always so full of rich and interesting things. I wonder if like two hundred years from now, people will look at us the way we look at the middle ages or something.

No.

To expand, I'm not a fan of history because while I am more than capable of learning from it, large chunks of the world do not. History has some good moments in it, but we're also doomed to repeat it.

Needless to say, I loved Guns, Germs, and Steel. One of my favorite books.
A friend of mine told me that book was some wierd reimagining of history, on par with '1421'... I'll have to check it out now, because I'm starting to think that he didn't know what he was talking about because you seem to know your stuff.
I have this book. To summarize it crudely: culture and race mean little or nothing, Europe was destined to come out on top regardless of who inhabited it, and our circumstances define us.

There are a few glaring tautologies and the book simply ignores any "turning points" in history, but in general it's an interesting and enlightening read. Just take it with a grain of salt and don't make it your only reference on history.

I don't really care for history, but that's probably because I don't know jack about it. I do love classical music though, so I've gotten some history that way, and WWII interests me, and a few historical figures. Mostly genius types like Goethe or artists like Shakespeare. I LOVE reading about Da Vinci.

I particularly like the New Kingdom period of Egypt, the Republican period of Rome, the Byzantine Empire, Han China, and the history of politics in general.
