Has anyone else played the Dawn of War 2 beta and been incredibly disappointed with it?

Its just Company of Heroes with a 40k paintjob. I know it may be a 'beta' but seriously WTF is without having any other buildings. What kind of RTS doesnt involve resources collecting and builders.

And another thing, knocking down playable races from 9 to 4 is just ridiculous. Ive been waiting for the Tyranid to be in DoW since the original, not anymore.

If the full game is anything like this, they wont get my money.

well the first point you make works. And I can't comment not having played it but..

2nd point? Original DoW only had 4 races too.

Fair enough, The devs made a design decision and you dont agree with it then the best thing you can do is to not purchase it.
Personally I think it looks good, but then my PC cant run it, so thats kind of a moot point for me.

I know the original only had 4, but what im saying is why build it up to 9 races, when they are just going to chop 5 straight out from under us.

I loved the Necron, Tau and Dark Eldar (despite their lack of turrets)

I played the multiplayer beta, and it seems reeeeally simple. Limited units, no buildings, and minimal game modes make it a tough sell as a competitive RTS.

I won't be ditching starcraft for this, that's for sure.

Yeah, I heard quite a few people were disappointed with it. I also heard they cut down base building (haven't played it yet so I don't know) which for some reason they thought was a good idea. I love base building :(

Why did they have to go changing stuff, when the original formula was not just great, but phenomenal.

Well, the beta has the problem of not opening the main menu on my computer so I couldn't tell you how I feel. When they patch that problem I'll inform you.

Base building isn't exactly realistic either. Wouldn't armies first wipe out the enemy, then set up a larger base? A change is good.

I always thought base building wasn't exactly realistic as well. I enjoyed Dawn of War and will still play it. I think that the single player for DoW2 will be much better than the original game.

Honestly, I played DoW for the campaign.

I would much rather 4 races on a new engine done well, than more than 4 done horribly.

In DoWI you were competing for the most important points in the entire goddamn universe. The entire point of building bases was to create a safe drop point.

Unless we are willing to argue that there are no bases at all anywhere in the LORE of warhammer 40k.

Last time I checked every major location had a base of some kind. Except for the emperor, he's just chillin out in the rain on a merry-go-round.

The point of DoW I was to give you the feeling of endless warfare over the largest and most vital points in the war.

In DoW II I think they are trying to accentuate the tiny skirmishes that we all assume are going on in between the major battles.

I will severely miss the visual bridges of corpses across the rivers on the water maps of the first game...well ok I won't since I'll still be playing it but you get what I mean.

I feel their largest mistake was trying to make it TT and halfassing it.

If they wanted TT they should have gone all the way. I loved Dawn of War I and Tabletop, but Dawn of War II just...

[The Above is entirely the view of me and I'm not asking you to agree with it]

OK I've been playing the DoW2 beta rather extensively and...

...let me just say that it has EXCELLENT POTENTIAL. Without getting into too much detail, I'll point out it is absolutely not CoH with a different paintjob. Relic simply took some aspects of CoH and sprinkled in lots of other great ingredients from other RTS games over the years.

Of course races have not been "knocked down". There will be more expansions on the way that will add races. It's just that Relic finally realized that having NINE DISTINCT RACES is extremely hard to balance so they're starting slow.

Oh and if you've been waiting for the Tyranids, your wait is over... >:) Now is our time brother!

We also feel that the interface was just slapped on and is clunky with the game mechanics.
That's the only real huge criticism I can give to it that I won't budge on. The UI is absolutely terrible. No resolution gives you a respectable view of the map (This coming from a guy playing on a 22 inch monitor :p).

No, i was extremely satisfied, and enthralled by the experience.

Well, yes it is very similiar to CoH but then again, CoH was a brilliant RTS, one of the best in a long time. DoW2 has the same kind of resource collecting as DoW 1, except for power, which is different. Many great RTS games have had no builders, ever heard of the Ground Control series? This game does have resource collecting, it jsut requires you to be aggressive to get it, rather than being a turtle such as the original.

I don't know what to make of this. You want them do what it took 1 game with 3 expansions and several years to do, in one single game? Do you have any concept of what software development involves? Are you out of your mind? It took them YEARS of development to create all 9 races and you want them to sell away all their expansions in a single game? Seriously...

Hey, if you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to buy it. It is your money but i attempt to allow other people to recognise that DoW2 is possibly one of the best RTS titles for a VERY long time. I don't remember an RTS this fast paced, this supporting of tactical, aggressive players since...well Starcraft. If you enjoy strategy, combined with tactics, Dawn of War 2 is a must not miss title.

The only problem i found was the limitation of units but then i thought back to DOW1. Most units i didnt use. In fact, until they restricted the tier 3 units, everyone ignored tactical squads and spammed termies. The wargear options allow you to gear your units to specific roles on the fly, which add impressive tatical flexibility.

One of the best moments of the beta was when a wraithlord was chasing my hive tyrant, only to have the anti-vehicle wargear finish, and have it turn around and kill the wraithlord.

I never understood the "nobody is forcing you to buy it" response to "they won't get my money".

It sounds like you are stating outright that he is wrong for having an opinion.

Just seems odd.

"You don't like a game that I like! You are a fool! Nobody is forcing you to buy this amazing piece of technology you ignoramus! "

:p

Likewise that comment of the races is what people brought up for NWN II.

"Why are you complaining that out of the box it sucks? NWN I sucked too."
"Yes but NWN I didn't come after years of development of NWN 0"

Yes it took years, now its done, why go backwards again especially when you cut out a HUGE chunk of that development time by removing buildings (which are each unique units of their own).

I think one side of the party is overestimating how hard developing a game is and the other side is underestimating. I'm not immune either, I just wish people who say ITS REALLY HARD would at least like...I dunno...have done it to know instead of guessing.

"It's not rocket science."
"Well yeah but neither is rocket science if you know it."
