Actually, being functionally bisexual I find it reasonably representative and charming, and it fits much better with the nature of the setting than just having everyone decide at the beginning of the game if they're gay or straight. Kirkwall doesn't have a village, who you have sex with is clearly a very individual thing, and what better way to express that than to have characters express attraction to individuals rather than wearing a little sign saying 'I am exclusively gay' or 'I am exclusively straight'.

What is 'illegitimate' about that sexuality? It's incredibly close to how my sexuality actually works in real life.
The characters arent really "bisexual" though. Its not a real part of who they are. And when every romance in the vanilla game "swings both ways" to appeal to everyone, its cheap, lazy and crass. At the expense of being truly faithful to the characters and deciding who they are as individuals theyve all been slapped as bisexual so Bioware can cheaply get 8 romances for the price of 4.

I think Bioware has, and probably will continue, it's hate fueled campaign against furries, robosexuals, and objectosexuals.

I think there should be a game where you are a homosexual but decide whether or not to fight the urges. You lose when you encounter Dr. House.

I "Have" Played the game at a friend's house.
Yes the Male characters were hitting on me, but I just ignored them.
After a while I just told them to go fuck off, and that fixed the problem right away.

Why is someone complaining aobut something were all you have to do is Press a button to get it to stop?

I don't get it. Its a roleplaying game. You can choose to play a character with one sexual orientation or the other. Pretty much end of discussion.
I found it pretty funny when Fenris hinted at something and my male Hawke warrior firmly rejected him before the scene got awkward.
I imagine manly, male warrior Hawke is somewhat uncomfortable with homosexuality and that scene hit it right spot on :)

But yes, the fact that all NPCs(except day 1 DLC Sebastian apparently) swing both ways does seem rather lazy.

Same actually. Although would you break the last taboo...play as an asexual Hawke??
Actually the last taboo would probably be getting with Bethany or Carver.
Or your mother. I mean for a women who had 3 kids she doesn't look that bad.

Speaking as a bisexual man, speaking for my close friends who are gay, lesbian and transsexual, I have to say this.

Gaider is the man.

I've found that when it comes to the romance options I go for character rather than gender. I'm heterosexual myself but my first romance option in DA:O was Zevran while playing a male human noble. The way he just blatantly came out with the "Hey you're hot lets fuck" caused me no end of amusement for some reason and I thought "Lol, lets go" Although I'm gonna screw that over completely when I admit my first romance was Isabella in DA2 because... well it's Isabela.

Although when Zevran makes his cameo with Isabela in the party I pounced at the chance of a threesome. It takes place of screen but I just had to, call me easily amused

While a large part of me actually agrees with you, Bioware has been under a relentless assault of people on their forums saying that all romance interests should be bi-sexual because otherwise it's not fair.

Honestly, Bioware can't win.
I understand your point, but I doubt its as one sided as that, and if Bioware caved in because of that then they only deserved to be criticised harder.

Sometimes a bi character works. I think Liara being bi in ME1 fit perfectly with her character and the nature of much of her species. Somes totally gay, lesbian or straight characters work.

The idea that "they all have to be bi to please everyone" is as offensive to me as the old days where it was mainly just about appealing to straight male gamers. I think its limiting, stupid and not good writing at all.
You know, I kind of agree with that. On the other hand, I think the romances are not that bad in DA2 and certainly not copy-pasted. To me they do feel natural to the character. I mean, Merril is pretty much smitten after you flirt with her once.

... are people really still talking about this game?
Playable and enjoyable, just not what one expects from Bioware.

Really?

What makes someone 'really' bisexual? Because I was under the impression that identifying as bisexual or being socially labelled as such for expressing attraction to members of both sexes was enough.

Also, who says you need to be bisexual to have sex with members of both sexes? Real life sexuality is full of exceptions.

Maybe I'm not getting this.. what's wrong with the characters? How are they not faithful to themselves? They're made up human beings, not real people being forced at gunpoint to play a role which isn't them.

If Hawke is male, then Anders and Karl were lovers. That's a part of his backstory and character. Isabella would merrily have a 3 woman threesome in Origins, so that's part of her backstory. The only romancable characters who, as far as I'm aware, do not have their sexual history dealt with in game are Fenris and Merrill. Origins made it quite clear that Dalish culture doesn't do recreational sex at all, meaning that Merrill is already transgressive regardless of which gender Hawke she chooses to fuck. Which leaves only Fenris.

As the example of Zevran (who claims he prefers women, but whose upbringing has taught him to be flexible) shows, you don't always need to worry about whether someone is a 'real' bisexual. There are massive numbers of middle aged openly gay people who have ex-spouses and/or children. Does that mean they're not 'really' gay, or does it mean that people occasionally 'break the rules' in surprising ways?

To me, it would be more offensive to pretend that sexuality is utterly fixed and immutable and that noone ever does anything with the same sex unless they have a massive pulsing gay gene than it is to make the majority of companions open to romance regardless of your gender.

Am I missing the problem here? Why is the guy complaining? This kind of thing happens in real life too (though maybe not where he lives depending on his location). It's no different then when a girl you don't like flirts with you. No less akward either.

$5 says he had no problems with the lesbian sex in Mass Effect.

i actually had the same problem!

ijust wanted to kick the characters in the balls!
i think the game is a teeny bit *too*
homosexual
*i think the chick i was hitting on was isabela*
eeehmm....I'm not a master in the field of grammar but WHAT?

Anywho, I actually like the game because it's so diverse and that I can have sex with everything >.< Fun, fun!
P.s. That homophobic person says that "you can't lump every straight male gamer into one category", I tell you waht, he is! By saying that straight male gamers can't handle a bit of man on man flirting, nothing wrong with that!
yes, sorry for poor grammer, english is not my first language.
it's just, well, as a straight person, i find it disturbing while trying to hit on one chick, there's a whole que of men trying to hit on me. it's, erm, slightly disturbing. after turning donw one dude, 6 more pop up like wooden ducks at a firing range.
*yes, another SHITTY yahtzee quote.*
Is it maybe because you have inner conflicts on your sexuality?

In response to the original asshole I feel it is now my duty as a straight male gamer to make the gayest dragon age character humanly possible. So that's what I'm gonna do. He's going to be so gay that dicks just fly out of the woodwork and he's going to save the goddamn world.

Eh, I hate the whole relationship thing regardless in games, irrelevant of sex.

Seems like it's the new QTE to have to force a romance on the protagonist.

If you could pick your compainions like in Origins and Awakening this problem wouldn't exist. The gay elf in Origins I simply killed before he could join me.

I didn't like the Quinari guy either, so guess what, I left him to rot in that cell.

Nathaniel comes to me in Awakening and is like "sup i'm a howe and I would kill you if you let me out of here". So I was like ok... hang him.

The characters in DA2 were pretty terrible, but the biggest flaw was that you had to take them. If I could have said NTY to that 12 year old elf chick snd the emo JRPG guy castoff it would have made my day.
