Personally I'd say FFXIII. Amazing gamplay, graphics and story.

I never much liked DA:O. Too much like Neverwinter Nights (yeah I know, same developer, but at least do some innovation!). That said, Neverwinter Nights was awesome, so Dragon Age isn't too bad if you're into it.

Of course, they are very different games, so comparing them is kinda futile. If you like the whole standard western RPG format and a bit more freedom, go for Dragon Age. If you like great storytelling and a whole new world, get FFXIII.

edit: dang it, double post again. What's with this browser, I pressed the button one time... Back to IE it is then.

OT: I am curious as to what the expansion might bring though. I said to myself I wouldn't buy it as Dragon Age was mediocre at best IMO, but still I'm kind of hooked on the story. Maybe later when it's cheapo...

Only thing I heard about FFXIII is that it sucks compared to its predecessors and basically isn't a very good game. And that's coming from 2 FF/Playstation fanboys- Apparently FFXIII does away with a lot of the roleplaying elements and ALL of the free-roaming world element, making it pretty much an action-rpg like Fable, except with LESS roleplaying elements.

Dragon Age on the other hand I personally think is awesome, although I've heard it runs poorly on consoles, especially the PS3.

It will stick with you much more after you play it, because well, it's your story.
Heh, I understand where you're coming from, but my opinion is totally different. My story sucks! I'm no fantasy writer. I'd rather be told a good story, and the well-told ones (IMO) are the ones that have stayed with me: FFVII-VIII, and the amazing Planescape: Torment. That's why the linearity of FFXIII absolutely does not bother me.

Anyway, considering the two games, they are so very, very, very different. If I could only play one, it would definitely be FFXIII, but that's me.
This is what makes gaming so great. There is something for everyone. While we have differing opinions neither is punished for those opinions. Gotta love how there is always someone ready to please our wants. : )
Yes! I absolutely agree. I only wish this accepting philosophy was more prevalent on the Internet :)

Hmm well it depends really, dragon age is more of an RPG but I preffered F.F.XIII because of it's easy to follow linear story. Fallout 3 is something you may also want to consider, that's a pretty open R.P.G.

Dragon Age. It has a stellar story, stellar gameplay, and stellar characters.

FFXII on the other hand, has transvestites with too much hair jell and giant, apparently-weightless broadswords.

I think you can guess my opinion on Final Fantasy.
...none of the characters in FFXIII wield broadswords. You have: A transforming Sword/Gun combo, fists, dual pistols, a freaky staff with weird yo-yo strings thing, a boomerang and a double-tipped spear.

Further, it's probably the least androgynous Final Fantasy yet.

Unless you consider the chocofro androgynous.
But easily one of the most angsty for about 7 hours.

Seriously, Final Fantasy XIII is great until the game dumps every possible role on you and it costs thousands of CP per skill. At that point, I just turned off the game. I'll return to it at some point, but I really couldn't be bothered. Also, I'd have to go with FF, because Dragon Age bored me stiff. The story wasn't really that gripping, I didn't care about any of the characters, and the combat was so wooden I got bored after around 8 hours.

So I'm pickin up a new PS3 pretty soon and I love me some RPGs, I've seen reviews of these two and my friend who has both has told me about both of them but he's a die hard FF fan, so his opinion is obviously biased more to FF. What I want to know is which one should I pick up with my PS3? I am going to pick up FF13 no matter what eventually but should I pick it up first, or go with Dragon Age? Or is there another RPG more worth my time? Some feedback would be great because I'm really split on these two

from my own personal preferance, I would say FF13 without question

I started Dragon Age, had to make my own character (bad so far) and then I was bombarded with dialogue options, that probably alter the storyline (which also sucked)... the game had nothing going for me so i just stopped

Final Fantasy XIII.

Unless you really like reloading your game four times on one quest because the damn cutscene didn't play, or it did but the boss didn't spawn in it so now you're locked in a room waiting for a boss that'll never turn up, or any one of a million other fatal and/or irritating bugs that Dragon Age still has.

Dragon Age has already dropped in price here in the UK but before telling you where to get from I looked at where you are from, and with that in mind I would say it is your patriotic duty to get Dragon Age before FFXIII ;-)
Seriously, they are both a lot of fun, can you have look around and see if anywhere has a bundle that would enable you to get both with your PS3?
I personally would pick DA first.

I'd go with neither normally, both have really annoying parts to them that don't exactly encourage me to play them. I have both games though oddly enough, impulse buy or love of RPGs? who knows.

Anyway, currently I'd say Dragon Age but that's because I've played it more than FF13 thus far.

Really it all comes down to if you prefer Western or Japanese RPG's. If you like Western go DragonAge, JRPG's go FFXIII. Personally having played both I'd say FFXIII probably the one to go for.

Dragon Age. It's currently cheaper and is so awesome it will convert the most diehard of JRPG fans. That said, I am nearly finished my second playthrough of FFXIII *ahem*

Dragon Age.
Once you have played one FF you have pretty much played them all.
I doubt there is anything really changed since XII.
Dragon Age is you want something different
Final Fantasy XIII if you want something you're familiar with and want a crap soundtrack.

I am going to have to go with Dragon Age: Origins. In my opinion it is the better game.

I played Final Fantasy XIII and I just did not care for it. It is just way to linear and Hope is just a horrible character.

Tough choice, both very good games in my opinion. It depends on what you want really, Dragon Age is miles better on a PC, is constantly getting downloadable/new content and is very non-linear with great characters and an even greater degree of customisation.

On the other hand, Final Fantasy XIII is faster paced, exillerating and has a much better overall storyline with incredibly memorable characters that take slightly longer to get to like than Dragon Age. The main problem lays with how long you have to play it before it starts getting good.

So yeah, there are the good, the bad and the ugly in a nutshell for you, well, for my two cents anyways. Hope this helps you choose. Both games are really worth checking out though.

Maybe you just aren't talking to the right people? ;)

I thought I liked Snow at first. Then something happened part way through and I lost my admiration for him. I still can't put my finger on what it was he did, but there was something.

I don't think it was Vanille's voice, I think it was her dialog. But I liked the voice itself. The actress who played her did a fine job.

It is interesting to me how much characters seem to be the deciding factor on how much I'll like a game. I'll play total crap sometimes just because I'm invested in a particular character.
I believe that I began to hate Snow right around when I started realizing that he was a total dick. I mean, Hope's crying right in front of him, muttering evil curses at him, and he's going around saying "ZOMG I MUST RESQ SARAH!"

Yeah. I did like Snow at first as well. Right around that point... He died. The only characters in that game who develop AT ALL are Lightning and Hope. I swore when it cut from them to freaking Sazh and Vanille. >> (Although that might be because I had no upgraded weapons except for Lightning...)
That would probably be another reason I disliked the game. Being forced into the various pairs of fighters for so long, instead of being able to adjust my party even a little bit.

And, for some reason, at least for me, they always seemed to be the worst paradigm match-ups.

Even so, I'd still argue it's one of the best FF fighting systems they've made. And I really did enjoy the enemy design. FF always seems to do a great job with that though.
