You're telling me it was any more angsty than Tidus 'Crybaby McWhinypants'? Bullshit.
There is Angst on show in FFXIII, but people actually get on and deal with it.

You're not meant to be levelling your secondary roles unless you're excessively grinding. It's all too easy to finish the game without touching them.
In fact, given that the secondary roles are only useful when you get all the Role Level upgrades, and you don't get those until Level 10 of the Crystarium, which is unlocked by completing the game, it is evident that you are not really supposed to use them.

Well at least it was warranted in FFX. If the world you knew was blow to bits and nothing but rubble was left, wouldn't you be a tad upset? Not to mention he is 1000 years behind the times. (I'm using the knowledge you have at the start of the game to avoid incurring spoiler wrath)

Whereas Hope is just...insufferable for a long while.

His mum just died, he has daddy issues, he's forced to travel with the person who he blames for his mum's death and on top of all that he's cursed to be a permanent outcast from everyone he ever knew and cared about, not to mention likely hunted until he gets killed.

You say Tidus is understandable? Bloody hell man, take off the blinkers. I'm not a huge fan of Hope's whining but he's at least as justified as Tidus.

Dragon Age, a thousand times over. Of course, I have never played the console version and I'd suspect that it's a bit cumbersome to play in that format, but I'd still take that over FF13. This is simply compounded by the fact that a great many people who traditionally like JRPGs (and Final Fantasy in particular) have had less than stellar things to say about it. Honestly, I was considering picking up FF13 myself until fans of such things pointed out it was "worse than they were expecting". I may still pick it up however, but such news does delay my interest until "later" when there aren't a half dozen games I'd rather play.

Tough choice, both very good games in my opinion. It depends on what you want really, Dragon Age is miles better on a PC, is constantly getting downloadable/new content and is very non-linear with great characters and an even greater degree of customisation.

On the other hand, Final Fantasy XIII is faster paced, exillerating and has a much better overall storyline with incredibly memorable characters that take slightly longer to get to like than Dragon Age. The main problem lays with how long you have to play it before it starts getting good.

So yeah, there are the good, the bad and the ugly in a nutshell for you, well, for my two cents anyways. Hope this helps you choose. Both games are really worth checking out though.
The chief criticisms I have heard regarding FF13 are (in no particular order):

I don't care about the characters
I have heard this exact story in previous titles
The system has been streamlined
The game takes ages to actually start being "good" (as in, many, many hours)
When the game becomes "good" for many it isn't "good enough"
The combat is "different"

Some of these strike me as meaningless complaints (combat being different for example), but some of the rest are violations of central principles of the JRPG.

That said, criticisms that are (regularly) leveraged against DA:O are:

It looks like ass (on a console)
It is difficult to control (on a console)
The game will happily murder your party (any system)
Combat is a "chore" (I personally enjoyed it)

There are obviously varying opinions on things like characters and storyline etc.

For my money, I'd say the question is what sort of systems one prefers. From what I hear, the plot and characters are fairly stock for Final Fantasy so there will be no real surprises there. The key distinctions between the two lie in the actual combat mechanics (in one case a game based on position and real time interaction and inventory and skill management, in the other a more or less turn based affair with primarily skill/spell management as the rest was apparently shelved) and the overarching metagame bits (dialogue trees versus cutscenes for example). DA:O is an excellent example of a "classic" style western RPG, and for those who like games like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale (or any games of similar style) DA:O is a viable choice.

For gamers who favor the JRPG approach to the genre, FF13 is probably the better choice. I speak as a fan of Western RPGs, and thus I am easily swayed by bad news regarding a game I was only mildy interested in.

Dragon Age.

It has Dragons.
LOL! Although if FFXIII has Bahamut in it, it does too.

So it looks like I'm gonna be picking up FFXIII. I'll probably get DA eventually too, but seeing as nearly everyone is saying FF, that can't be ignored. Thanks for the input everyone!
It does but he ain't a dragon.

The worst thing about Hope was that he failed to stab Snow.

Seriously, not only is Snow rubbish in fights (his only notable stat is HP), he was far more of an insufferable prat than Hope.

At least Hope has the decency to be your strongest caster.

How can you compare the two?

Well, do you enjoy freedom, with high customization and real-time combat, at expense of the story? Then go Dragon Age.

Or would you prefer a phenomenal story, with a different take on the average Turn-based combat system, at the expense of freedom and customization? Then go FFXIII.

FFXIII.

Dragon Age got very samey for me at the game progressed. FFXIII grew and just got better. That, for me, makes a good game :).

THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
Choosing one over the other would be entirely up to personal preference.

Final Fantasy XIII since the game was actually, oh, what's the word... oh yeah, fun! Not incredibly boring and unbalanced combat that made trying to beat the well-written game like crawling naked over broken glass in a desert.

I would go with FFXIII, but only because it's not on a PC.

I love Dragon Age to fuck and back, but I simply cannot like it on consoles. It just plays poorly IMO. So I'd have to recommend FFXIII, as much as it pains me to do so.

I havent any experience with FF but I bought dragon age for PS3 and it truly is (in my opinion) totally shite. Everything it does has been done better by other RPG's.

That being said, everyone I have ever spoken to about it except one loves it to bits. From personal experience with DA I'd recommend FF if you're into that kinda thing, my friends have all given it positive reviews.

Dear People,

To those who thought FF13 had a "Great Story", I'm not denying that. I'm a Square Enix fan, and I hated FF13. Worst. FF Game. Ever. Snow made me want to kill him after his freaking opening (Hope was pissed as HELL at him, he never notices), Hope was an emo ***** until he and Lightning go off, then he became fun, but the fact that you people call it an RPG is laughable. Show me one point in the story where I can pick what I do.

Go on. I'll wait.

In this Post: People playing a JRPG and expecting it to be a WRPG. Seriously, you're surprised you don't get to choose your own story? Jesus Heroin Snorting Christ man, have you ever played a JRPG before?

They really do need to put him back at the top of the summon tree.

Oh, and make summons not shit for once, thanks.
They're useful in FFXIII, but only for taking Oretoises off their feet. That's about it. FFX summons were awesome.

In 13 he is Bahamut Prime, King of the Transformers
He's still King of the Dragons, he just happens to also be a Transformer. He's a Dragon Transformer. How is that not cool?
