Both are 2 very different games... but personally I actually prefer Dragon Age so far.

That said, I'm only at the beginning of FF XIII... so yeah.

Depends...if you like WRPGs buy Oblivion, if you like JRPGs buy Final Fantasy, if you want more of either genre but definitely not the best buy Dragon Age for West and Eternal Sonata for East.
Also keep an eye open for a western Ps3 release of Tales of Vesperia or a copy of Valkyria Chronicles.
If you're really into your shooters, Fallout 3 or Borderlands are worth checking out too

Crap soundtrack? On a Square Enix game?

What are you talking about?

This is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison isn't it? JRPG and WRPG play completely different. I had a lot of fun playing DA:O and will get the expansion. I've also never been able to play ANY JRPG past 1-2 hrs before getting bored/frustrated. I can't help but feel that JRPG's are a story-telling experience where WRPG's give the player the chance to tell the story.

I don't think the stories are bad in JRPG's, I just can't bring myself to play the game long enough to get through it. I've watched others going through these games, and I'm content to watch during the cutscenes and actual story telling components.

To me this might as well be asking Battlefield vs C&C, similar elements, but totally different games. If you like WRPG's Dragon Age is a good choice(IMO), if you like JRPG's then you'll have to take the word of those that have played it.

Final Fantasy XIII.

Unless you really like reloading your game four times on one quest because the damn cutscene didn't play, or it did but the boss didn't spawn in it so now you're locked in a room waiting for a boss that'll never turn up, or any one of a million other fatal and/or irritating bugs that Dragon Age still has.

Tough choice, both very good games in my opinion. It depends on what you want really, Dragon Age is miles better on a PC, is constantly getting downloadable/new content and is very non-linear with great characters and an even greater degree of customisation.

On the other hand, Final Fantasy XIII is faster paced, exillerating and has a much better overall storyline with incredibly memorable characters that take slightly longer to get to like than Dragon Age. The main problem lays with how long you have to play it before it starts getting good.

So yeah, there are the good, the bad and the ugly in a nutshell for you, well, for my two cents anyways. Hope this helps you choose. Both games are really worth checking out though.
Also listen to these two, the first one outlines everything that's wrong with Dragon Age, it's so buggy and laggy and game breaking that it's horrible to play on consoles.

Listen to Mr.2 because he seems to have a very non biased opinion on them both. Dragon Age is customisable and has a lot to explore whereas Final Fantasy is much more story-based and that's where the pins lie.

Soundtrack.
Though the game is also sub-par with the older ones.

So I'm pickin up a new PS3 pretty soon and I love me some RPGs, I've seen reviews of these two and my friend who has both has told me about both of them but he's a die hard FF fan, so his opinion is obviously biased more to FF. What I want to know is which one should I pick up with my PS3? I am going to pick up FF13 no matter what eventually but should I pick it up first, or go with Dragon Age? Or is there another RPG more worth my time? Some feedback would be great because I'm really split on these two
If you have to ask, Dragon Age. Final Fantasy XIII is the first choice for any Final Fantasy fan regardless of what's available. Also Dragon Age is epic in size and dialogue. Also if you are thinking of RPG's to get avoid Fallout 3 on PS3 because there is too many problems with that version, so much to the point that it is almost unplayable. I know from experience

I rented DA and after playing for a couple hours, dropped it in favor of playing through Fallout 3 a second time.

The amount of dialouge choices really annoyed me, since what I said didn't seem to affect anything. There were so many I simply stopped reading them and just hit the button to skip through it. I could be a complete ass to someone, and while it may get an immediate reaction out of them, they didn't care a minute later and were very nice to me once again. And why give me all these choices saying that I don't wanna join their stupid faction when they force me to join anyway?

This is all just stupid ranting and I should probably give the game another chance, but I'm not in a good mood right now... I just watched The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Garbage.

I love the way people harp on about Dragon Age's dialogue, where in about 90% of cases the conversation will proceed exactly the same no matter which option you actually choose. Unless the options have a gameplay effect, you could be unfailingly polite or a complete cockhole and the person you're speaking to will not change their reaction in the slightest.

FFXIII can be appreciated by almost any gamer. It was developed to be more action based since the simple turn based fighting would appear dull in HD. It was also built to be more linear since the plot has your party living as outlaws and just running around everywhere in a world that hates you would be counter-productive to the theme. So, by RPG standards as far as making choices that effect the outcome of the game, world exploration, and deciding every action your party takes in battle - FFXIII doesn't deliver, but is simple enough for everyone to enjoy. (Although I understand their reasons, as a Final Fantasy fan I have been personally let down by it's simpleness and linearity. I'm still playing to see if the story makes up for this).

Dragon Age is really for hardcore RPG lovers that want to make every decision count. BioWare really took the franchise to the extreme and back to it's D&D routes. It's very wordy, but if you're into that you'll find an in depth story to almost everything you do. Controlling your party takes a lot of micromanaging - which is why it would be easier on PC than doing so with limited buttons on console. Suffice it to say, Dragon Age isn't a game for those who prefer simple RPGs.

But I love BioWare. So, does that make me biased? Long live Mass Effect, KoTOR/TOR, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, Baldurs Gate, and Jade Empire!!!

You're telling me it was any more angsty than Tidus 'Crybaby McWhinypants'? Bullshit.

Seriously, Final Fantasy XIII is great until the game dumps every possible role on you and it costs thousands of CP per skill. At that point, I just turned off the game. I'll return to it at some point, but I really couldn't be bothered. Also, I'd have to go with FF, because Dragon Age bored me stiff. The story wasn't really that gripping, I didn't care about any of the characters, and the combat was so wooden I got bored after around 8 hours.
You're not meant to be levelling your secondary roles unless you're excessively grinding. It's all too easy to finish the game without touching them.

I have enjoyed both but FF13 is edging out DAOA because it's got alot more content. And FF13's battle system has been really fun to learn and play around with.

I found the story in FFXIII to be very lacking, the fact that all the party members have the exact same reason to be there led to no difference between them other than the stereotype they represent. XIII had a cast of 19 characters in the whole game, 6 of whom are your party, and not all of them have names, and most don't get past having a name. I'll say again, thirteen characters in a 30+ hour RPG outside the party, not one of whom you see/talk to outside of storyline CGI/cutscene.

Gah, I wrote a review [http://rr.xbox360.ign.com/rrview/xbox360/final_fantasy_xiii/14266574/120639/], which is pretty long, about why FFXIII isn't a good FF. It includes no rants or unjust, in my eyes, criticisms. Let me add that I loved X, X-2 and IX, all of which this game borrows from. It also borrowed from XII, but I hated that. While I hate XII with a passion, XIII was such a monumental let down that it deserves some sort of exile.

I found the story in DA:O to be better, the characters better, the gameplay actually involving your brain was a good thing and the replayability of DA:O is leaps and bounds ahead of XIII. Even on console I'd recommend DA:O over XIII, the only time you'll get annoyed with DA:O on a console is when playing a mage, as you can only hotbar 6(?) spells/abilities, while you have access to many more.

Well, considering you're not looking to upgrade your PC, I would unfortunately have to say FF13.

Not that I really do want to recommend such tripe. SE hasn't put out a decent game in years.

I guess if you enjoy generic anime-esque plots with shallow characters, then be my guest, get 13.
