I love Dragon Age: Origins! I love it to death! And you can go ahead and take that statement literally, because I've spent so many hours on this game, even though I should have worked, that I've probably die one or two years earlier.

But even though I love this game, it has one mayor flaw:

Worst. RPG-trailer. Ever.

Now, I'm not talking about the epic trailer where they slay a dragon, no. I'm talking about this:

[sub]for those of you who don't know, that's Marylin Manson singing... do you feel the RPG-spirit yet?[/sub]
This is not a trailer for an RPG. This is the trailer for an action game. Seriously, Marilyn Manson? Not only do I find the song "This is the new shit" misplaced due to it's lyrics (Dragon Age: Origins isn't exactly the most original RPG ever), but a rock song for an RPG game?

Why not use Carmina Burana music instead, or some other epic theme of might?

If I had lived under a rock for 5 years, then saw this trailer, I would think "action-game". Actually, I'd think what the hell I've been doing under a rock, but you get the point, right?

Good thing they left mister Manson out of the soundtrack for the game. I would not have wanted to play an RPG while listening to that godawful "Tainted love" cover.

What do you think about this little thing. Am I right, or have you seen worse?

Why can't an RPG be an action game as well?
Because then it would not be an RPG, it would be a blend, like Borderlands. RPG-games has action elements, but it's not an action-genre.

OP: But yeah, I do hate it when people equate 'Rock music=intense'

DA:O demands Jeremy Soule or John Williams!
I know, and nobody expected it.

[sub]because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition Monkey Ninja [/sub]

It's just marketing.
Bioware, or more than likely it was EA, wanted to make sure that their game got some looks form people who might not normally get a Bioware game. Bioware's fanbase is pretty darn big, and I know I'd buy any Bioware RPG on day one without a second thought. But EA probably wanted to try and get a bigger audience, something beyond those who know Bioware does great work.

And how to do that? Well they won't change the game. Bioware knows what it's doing in that regard.
So, to the marketing! People who know Bioware might be like 'that's weird', but it does catch the attention of those who might otherwise over look it. Marylin Manson is enjoyable to some people (Though I, personally, am not sure why), and so it'll make those fans stop to watch a bit longer.

In the end: It's just marketing made to get more people interested. Obviously, this ad wasn't directed at you (Or me, to be honest).

And then they will be accused of false marketing by people who thought it was an action game and didn't bother looking it up online. Just like what happened to the Sweeney Todd movie with Johnny Depp and Watchmen.

I liked it, besides rock music can fit if that is the aesthetic they are going for. But in this case it isn't. Good thing they only use it in the promo materials. Besides how does the trailer have anything to do with the game itself? Saying your only complaint about the game is the trailer means you have no complaints about the game.

What says 'Dark Fantasy' more than Marilyn Manson?

Was probably the thought process.
If you could call that thought process.

I'd call it "Monkeys flinging shit at marketing team and the marketing team thinks that 'shit' would be a good theme to their trailer"

I'd say that you can criticize a game for it's marketing. It doesn't affect the game play or the game in general, but it affects peoples views on it from an outsider standpoint.

I really liked the ad. I'm not a Marilyn Manson fan, nor do I even know how to spell his name, but I've liked a few of his songs.

I agree with your belief that this wasn't suited for an RPG as the ad is far more action packed then the game however.

But the advert was way cool! Just like the game.

So they tricked people, who wouldn't normally have played an RPG, into playing it thinking it was going to be action packed?
I bet most of them loved it anyway, and the game makes more money so they'll keep making more. Win for everyone, me especially.

I'd think it was cooler if they used more awesome rock-music though...

Most people affected by false marketing I find becomes mad, not giving it a chance. I think the Watchmen movie was pretty darn epic, but a lot of people hated it because it wasn't action. Sweeney Todd was also awesome, but people didn't like it because it was a musical.

False advertisement makes people go against it the instant they find out it is false, no matter how good it is.

Rock-music and mindless killing, a perfect way to describe an RPG. /sarcasm

I just don't understand why they did this. All the in game music is breathtaking classical scores. This trailer is just... wrong. It doesn't fit the mood of the game and gives a very wrong impression of the music.

True but your definition of more awesome rock music may be well different to mine and a million other peoples. I'd say something like Nightwish has the right sort of feel for an RPG, grandiose, haunting, and pretty. You and the majority of others may think I'm a nonce for thinking that. By going with someone commercially largely successful and well known like Manson they at least guarantee that a chunk of rock lovers will approve.

You're right, but I'm in fanboy mode and insisting that Dragon age is the exception. Both those movies were very cool.

watch the Diablo series that's Mindless killing... and it's successful (i know about the story)
all I'm saying is that if the battles are cool in a RPG it's a plus for me and the battle in DA:O is kinda like in the clip
