And then they will be accused of false marketing by people who thought it was an action game and didn't bother looking it up online.
That's not false marketing.
I didn't say it was false marketing either. Sweeney Todd didn't use false marketing, but was accused for that anyway.
Well then who cares? People will always be stupid, no matter what kind of advertising you have.
What if you advertise for the cure of stupidity?

Oh wait, those idiots wouldn't buy it because it's too shiny...

The entire Marketing campaign around DA:O (and the DLC + "Social" Site stuff etc.) had EA written all over it. It was mostly about Blood, Tits and Violence and while the game has some of all of those it isn't exactly the "Main Selling Point".

Here is another one literally labeled "Sex & Violence": http://www.gametrailers.com/video/sex-dragon-age/49052
... OK, that trailers is even worse...

Could have been worse, actually. The very beginning, before it broke into the lyrics, it kind of worked. And the singing part was a pretty small minority of the time in that video. I would have to say that a lot of the new videos for DDO are worse. They are really just straight up, superfluous metal music in a a D+D setting. Its very awkward, and if I didn't already know that DDO is such a fantastic MMO, I probably would have avoided it.

There's my nomination for a worse video, and it too is entirely due to inappropriate music.

Oh, but the pun at the end was so worth it.

OT: As a rule, pretty much anything (except for the obvious) thats marketted using hard rock is in my opinion one to avoid. It's just a way of setting itself up as being more extreeeeeme. Just imagine that DA:O or DDO video with, i dunno, Loveshack instead of Senor Manson.

I really liked the ad. I'm not a Marilyn Manson fan, nor do I even know how to spell his name, but I've liked a few of his songs.

I agree with your belief that this wasn't suited for an RPG as the ad is far more action packed then the game however.

But the advert was way cool! Just like the game.
I'd think it was cooler if they used more awesome rock-music though...
True but your definition of more awesome rock music may be well different to mine and a million other peoples. I'd say something like Nightwish has the right sort of feel for an RPG, grandiose, haunting, and pretty. You and the majority of others may think I'm a nonce for thinking that. By going with someone commercially largely successful and well known like Manson they at least guarantee that a chunk of rock lovers will approve.
I sure don't, Nightwish is awesome! Also I submit that the majority of your audience has no idea what you mean when you suggest Nightwish. Personally I might have suggested something like Coronatus or the "quick, we need some epic movie trailer music" duo of choice for the film industry E.S. Posthumus (odds are quite good that you've heard multiple trailers using samples from their songs without knowing it over the years).

It's just marketing.
Bioware, or more than likely it was EA, wanted to make sure that their game got some looks form people who might not normally get a Bioware game. Bioware's fanbase is pretty darn big, and I know I'd buy any Bioware RPG on day one without a second thought. But EA probably wanted to try and get a bigger audience, something beyond those who know Bioware does great work.

And how to do that? Well they won't change the game. Bioware knows what it's doing in that regard.
So, to the marketing! People who know Bioware might be like 'that's weird', but it does catch the attention of those who might otherwise over look it. Marylin Manson is enjoyable to some people (Though I, personally, am not sure why), and so it'll make those fans stop to watch a bit longer.

In the end: It's just marketing made to get more people interested. Obviously, this ad wasn't directed at you (Or me, to be honest).
Sure but well if they really wanted to grab a larger audience then why pick Marilyn Manson? of all people his fan-base real isn't all that big. Most people just think he's an idiot and those that enjoy Marilyn Manson I would generalise as liking games like this anyway. I just think it's bad marketing to me it's equal to putting an Emineme or Gansta Rap song in the back ground, it just sounds out of place and wrong. Games like this need a sound track that's more operatic. Music like you'd hear in Gladiator or Lord of the Rings would have been more suited to advertise a game like this. However this is just my opinion and I could be completely wrong.

I will say that the beginning part of the trailer was doing it for me, That kind of 'rock' I can live because it helped set the mood but the whole screamo part just ruined what ever atmosphere the beginning set.

They couldn't do Love Shack. It would be TOO AWESOME FOR MORTAL EARS AND EYES.

Humm, I watched the trailer with the sound off, and I have to say it was pretty good. I agree with you the whole build up they game Dragon age in marketing made me think "Oh no, they've dumbed it down for the console market".

Fortunately, I was wrong.

I think this is an important point. Having played the game I agree that the song is completely irrelevant to the story/setting etc. but the purpose of the advert is to get people talking about it. And it's obviously doing a fairly good job considering the existance of this thread.

Also, i think some people are taking it too seriously. If you've actually played the game you'll know that aswell as being very deep in terms of story, characters and lore it can also be quite light hearted and there are often very funny moments, and on top of that you have the absurdity of being soaked with blood if your weapon so much as brushes against an enemy. None of these things are a bad thing, they offer an imporatant relief to the seriousness of the events unfolding around you. In my opinion the advert isn't so much advertising the game itself but advertising the "bad ass-edness" of the Grey Wardens in a very over the top way. Bioware knows they don't have to sell this, they already have a massive fan base, and for a good reason. It's just supposed to be a bit of fun.

Wow, that is some fucking horrendous music.
And not just in a "That does not fit the game at all" sense.

I mean objectively.
When did screaming become musical?
Can we go back in time and skin alive the person who came up with this concept?
An easier way of saying "skin alive" would be "flay"

This is not grammar nazi-ism, I am merely trying to help you improve your worditude for future needs!

Well, the screaming part of the song is indeed unfitting, but the rest is acceptable. Either way, the game is great and that's all that matters!

The dead trenches and the part you fight your way across the bridge over the darkspawn army was one of the most epic gaming moments in my life! Also the Brood Mother part of the stage made me shit my pants, well almost... So did the Anvil of the Void trials (especially the part with the golem statues, I had my headphones on max volume and the sound those traps made almost gave me 3 heart attacks!). I fucking love this game! I wonder if Mass Effect is equally good...

While Manson isn't my thing (Neither is 30 Seconds to Mars) I think both of the videos were pretty good. If you think the music doesn't fit an RPG, how about the fact that there was zero game play shown? It could be a fucking board game for all they let on. Should there have been nondescript latin chanting and organ music, instead?

Orite. Bioware, not Square. :p

... Yes? Epic scores are essential for RPG's, since it goes with the fantasy theme.
And what does the fact that it doesn't show game play have to do with anything? It's still a commercial for an RPG-game.

You can never have too much nondescript Latin chanting in my experience. I didn't realize there WAS a 30 Seconds To Mars trailer, or that they had used that song in the game until I beat it the first time and was sitting through the credits. Can't say I'm much of a fan but This Is War was decent enough (Bioware sent me some email about downloading it for free, might take them up on that given the lack of price tag).

Why not use Carmina Burana music instead, or some other epic theme of might?
I have two problems with this. First, the use of O Fortuna (the song most people think of when they hear Carmina Burana) has been used to death. I love the song and all, but it is derivative. Second, the song has nothing to do with might. It's a guy pining after a girl named Fortuna.
