Need help too.

This is a challenge for all of you.
I've HATED all alchool I tasted so far. Hate Beer, hate Wine, hate Champagne etc. However became drunk once (twice actualy) on my finalists trip because I wanted to know the sensation, I used Vodka with some juice, I hated too but it was the least bad.

Now I don't want to be drunk much times, but if I go out I think a drop of alchool might help me loosen a bit, so is there any chance I might like some alchoolic drink?
You like iced tea? If so, try a Long Island Iced Tea. Not a drop of tea in it, and it has 5-6 shots of all kinds of fun stuff, but it tastes exactly like tea if the barkeep is even half awake.

Since I drink to enjoy the flavour, and not to get blind drunk, my comments will probably be a little less aggressively try-hard than some others I've seen here ;-P I'm going to totally disappoint on the beer front (for reasons given below) but I know me my spirits and liqueurs, so I hereby present my absolute beginner list =D

I think it's always wise to stock up slowly on a good staple liquor cabinet. Personally, I'd go for a good whiskey (variety is up to you, but a good starter is something like Johnny Walker Black Label - I'm from NZ so I know scotch better than bourbon, I'll admit), a nice gin, and a decent vodka that you can enjoy properly both in the appropriate mixes and by itself, if you so choose. If you're feeling like an adventurous entertainer (and have stocked up on buckets and carpet cleaner) you could investigate the nicer tequilas =).

Obviously, there are many more you could include, and the price will decide what/how much/what kind you feel you can get, but a decent liquor cabinet is something that everyone should have if they like drinking and entertaining.

Beer I can't comment on because I loathe the stuff (I've tried to like it, but it just tastes...used...)

Wine (if we're being broad-spectrum here) is totally a personal choice, but I always think having a nice Riesling, a decent Sauvignon Blanc and a good Shiraz and Pinot Noir covers the bases. I hate Chardonnay, so it misses out in my recommendation, but if you like it, then go ahead.

Liqueurs are a whole new world once you start looking into them, but I tend to find that, if nothing else, Chambord tends to go over big, as do Creme de cassis, Tia Maria, Amaretto, Cointreau/Curacao and Limoncello.

My advice, dont drink just because you can. Unfortunatly, its apparently more weird to NOT drink alchohal than to, which is sad and pathetic. But that doesnt mean you have to drink. If you actually like alchohal, then fine, but dont over do it then.

A bit off topic, but has anybody here tried Absinthe? Somehow this magical green elixir calls out to me, but I haven't found it in my local liquor stores. Just wanna know what it tastes like, and so forth..
That's illegal in the U.S.
Really? There's an absinthe bar in San Diego...

Mixed drinks might be the best way for you. Stuff like hard lemonade and flavored martinis are really good but low on the alcohol flavor (usually). I like the raspberry lemonade at Hard Rock and the occasional Blood Orange martini. Something that you could get anywhere, though, is an AMF (Adios Mother F-----). It's a sprite based drink that you can't taste or feel the burn of the alcohol in your throat. It's got a crazy kick, though, so people really couldn't call it a "chick drink" for being mixed. Also a fun shade of neon blue.

Well, you can't go wrong with Sapporo. But if you're feeling extra classy you could go for a good single malt scotch or some good ol' Jack.

Be an American and constantly have a handle of Jack at your side.
Haha. I really think I am about the only one who thinks as far as 80 proof whiskeys are concerned that Jim Beam > Jack Daniels in terms of flavor.
I like Jim Beam better than Jack as well. To me it tastes better and goes down more easily. Less of that grimace after drinking it, you know?

But to answer the OP: If you're looking for a beer, I happen to like Stella Artois. If you want something around the same potency as beer but don't want something that tastes like beer you could try Mike's Hard.

However, I tend to drink Bourbon, specifically Fighting Cock. It's 103 proof but doesn't have that "bite"(I don't know what to call it) that other whiskeys and bourbons I've had(which is admittedly few) which makes you want to exhale and grimace after drinking it.

If you're looking at other liquors, my personal preference is to stay away from rum but that's just because I'm not a fan of it. Maybe I'm wierd. I do enjoy vodka, but I'd advise testing more than one brand to see if it's your thing. Many liquor stores(around here at least) have sampling tables from time to time. If they have a vodka being sampled, give it a test do you don't have to shell out the money for a whole bottle to find out if it's a brand you'll enjoy.

It's also probably fairly important to decide why you're drinking. If you're drinking to get plastered, stronger is usually better and taste isn't as important since once you're drunk the taste isn't going to bother you as much. But if you're drinking in an environment of hanging out and getting a little buzzed, than it's probably best to experiment with different types of drinks and brands until you find something you enjoy drinking while sober and almost sober.

Ciders: Strongbow or Magners, both are fantastic and in my opinion nothing beats a half pint of Strongbow with a half pint of Guinness poured into it over a bent spoon (called a Snakebite).

Beer: I drink Carling because it's cheap. Other good beers IMO are Zubr, Zywiec, HobGoblin, Faxe, Innis & Gunn. Or if you're feeling frisky BullMax 40oz Malt Liquor.

Liquor: Southern Comfort, Bailey's, Absolut Vodka, Dr. McGillicudy's and Jamieson's. The Dr. is peach schnapps and quite tastey, I suggest it though it's pretty thick. Also a big fan of Ouzo and Sambucca.

Coolers: Bacardi Orange Popsicle tastes fucking delicious, also anything made by Vex is tastey. Smirnoff is not a good thing to buy, nor is REV.

Enjoy responsibly.

as far as beer, the one I usually consume is "Steel Reserve" ($2 per 24oz can) Its one of the more potent beers around here. Unless you can get your hands on some truly imported beer. (kinda hard to get and a little expensive)

What, are you trying to kill him? Or just ensure that he never wants to touch beer again?

To the OP: Preferred drinks are such a variable thing from person to person (aside from the swill that most people can agree is ditchwater, like the abovementioned Foster's, or similar rubbish like Bud) that's it's hard to recommend something. Just try something different each time you have a drink and you'll soon get an idea of what you like and can go looking for similar things. And drink in moderation, don't binge-drink. No matter what some people say, vomiting is never cool, nor is making a complete dick of yourself. And liver cancer is especially never cool.

My own preference is for Belgian, German and Czech beers, high-end gin and vodka, and port. And with spirits you can generally taste the price difference quite clearly - low-priced spirits usually taste like rocket fuel.

Drinking and getting drunk are two different things. Also it's better to learn ones limits than not to learn them.

Visited a liquor store for the first time today. Was completely overwhelmed by the selection. Now I'm new to drinking, so I really don't know what I like yet, so I just bought a four pack of Pabst blue Ribbon because it was 3.50 and I heard good things about it.
Frank from Blue Velvet drinks PBR, so how can it be bad?

I don't drink, but as far as beers go my girlfriend really likes Heineken, Grolsch, Corona, and the Australian-brewed Tooheys Extra Dry and Coopers Clear which you'd be lucky to find in the US I guess (and Australians don't drink Fosters, it's apparently horrible). She also likes vodka, preferably Polish and absolutely NOT the French stuff which is either really gross or highly overpriced for what it is. She also doesn't mind stuff like Kahlua, Baileys, Frangelico etc but won't touch rums, whiskey and so forth.
