Not really, because my top 3 most listened to artists are Led Zeppelin, Eminem, and Lady Gaga.
I listen to a wide range of music.
If thats a wide range... my range must be off the charts. I listen to nearly everything (jazz, classical, reggae, blues, rock, metal, funk, techno and so on) except rap... especially all this new crap with all the auto tune

And usually IM the one telling people to listen to a wider range of music. Theres so much people miss out on if all you listen to is what you hear on the radio.

I haven't really gotten that. My music taste is rather diverse, but its filled with bands that make people go "who?" I listen to everything from classical (chopin) to korean bands (Mot, Jacquim) to pop (Kate Nash, Regina Spektor) and indie groups (Decemberists, Joanna Newsom) to 80's pop to modern rock etc etc. I'm just not into hard rock, metal, or rap.

I do have to agree that when I was in my teens, I should have broaden my horizons. I used to listen to just grunge, because I was angry with the world. Well I listened to Alanis Morisette and Tori Amos too, but my folks weren't okay with that (me being trans).

It was just an example. I listen to every genre.

Oh man, I get this all the time as all I really listen to Classic Rock. My typical response is "It's cute you try to compare gods with men." and walk off.

Seriously, if you already found perfection, nothing else will do.

Not in so many words but I have been asked if I get bored of listening to the same music all the time. Well yes a bit, but at least I'm listening to what I like instead of listening to the same rubbish, generic autotune 'songs' over and over on the radio.

I get told to listen to different types of music all the time. Then people look at my mp3 and realise that I have everything from We Butter the Bread with Butter to Eminem. Then they shut up.

I actually say it to my friends all the time

I'm the one who tells people that.
Same. It's abit of a dick thing to say to people, but when I hear people listening to trash like Lady Gaga or Kesha I kind of have to tell them to listen to something that's not rubbish.
Ditto. It annoys the hell out of me when people, especially my friends, are happy to listen to whatevers in the charts so I feel it's my duty to say 'hey, have you heard these bands? They have talent'
It does sound like a dick thing to say but in the words of The Bronx: 'This isn't music, it's a pyramid scheme'

Ugh, yes.
I don't listen to much music, it is not something I can just sit down and "do" usually saving it as something to listen to to pass time when working/driving. And its never being suggested to listen to more music, but more like being accused of being small/closed minded, and in one case I have "no soul".

How I handled it was I stopped hanging out with pot heads. Not saying all music geeks are pot heads, but the ones that are the most aggressive are.

I told them they need to look through my music library before saying that since the only stuff i don't listen to is the new crap that is coming through the radio. I then told them to listen to more music and expand their musical tastes by going back to their roots in music.

I told someone at work that I have over 8,000 songs on my computer and this guy went on about how that isn't something to brag about and I should be ashamed because of how little it is, yet for the past month or two, all has listened to is Tool.

Some guy once told me metal is gay and that I should be more normal and listen to rap.
I responded with 'So instead of being myself you want me to listen to someguy saying how he had sex, broke the law or beat his wife?'
He then said 'Fuck of you gay prick'
And the headteacher was right behind him.
Good times, good times...
Metal all the way!!!

I get told exactly the opposite, by the members of my band.

They say I should be more focused in what I listen, so that I will be more focused in what I play. I answered: "BUT DREAM THEATER IS SOOOO COOOOOL!"

...YES, I do like Dream Theater

I generally go into a long rant about how they should not be criticizing my tastes in music, how they're going to one day die alone in a puddle of their own misery and blood/tears, and then I ask them politely to leave before they respond.

I'll listen to my music without your unimportant and needless criticism, thank you.

A friend of mine (who I've been friends with damn near a decade, so I don't really care what people think of her, she's still a good person) keeps trying to get me into her typical 'disney star' kinda music. Jonas Brothers, Beiber, Miley Cyrus, that stuff.

I did manage to find a couple nice songs and artists from it (Mariana's Trench, anyone?), and she'll listen to my weird bands if I listen to hers, so it all kinda works out okay.

Except for when she gets Lovebug stuck in my head. Not that it's the worst song I've ever been subjected to, but it's the catchiest one that I hate. It makes me want to die. Brutally murder all three 'Jo-Bros', and then kill myself. If they're celibate, I'd be pleased to go to hell to stay away from them. FUCKING LOVEBUG.

When other people tell me so, however, I usually reply with something like 'I'm pleased with my Kloot and my Bowie, thanks. Can't stand violent stuff. Never confuse 'not listening to' with 'not liking'."

EDIT: Now talking about it has caused Lovebug to get stuck in my head. Farewell, my dear friends, but I'll see you in the afterlife. *Kurt Cobain'd*

I really despise people who say shit like that, I get comments like that from people at college all the time, it only seems to come up when im listening to something that they dont like.
I generally respond by putting both my headphones in my ears, turning the volume up, and ignoring them.

I think I have a pretty wide taste in music, wider than most of my friends at least the sort who only listen to rosk and indie music. Also I don't condem other genres of music, I may not like particular artists but that's not representitive of that whole music and if people do enjoy it then I wont stop them. However I don't really have a very wide range of music, I don't buy things a lot because I don't have that much money and I don't like piracy. What I'll do is find a new artist, maybe buy their album and then listen to their stuff constantly, I recently found Crystal Castles and now I'm obsessed! Its all I listen to now on my iPod.

One of my mates tell me I am close minded about music, despite the fact that I have about 400 artists in my library, about 100gbs of music which covers everything from drum and bass to death metal to indie to ambient to orchestral to country to rap to pop. But because I listen to metal the most, I am close minded. And this comes from someone who literally listens to only 10 bands, I shit you not, about 10 bands, and I am close minded, unreal.
