Agreed with OP, decent to see a thread that isn't hating for once. All the escapist community does is ***** about every game that comes out, or any potential changes to any new games coming out. It is a bunch of people with dumb pony display pictures sooking about everything that is different or new, and then prefacing it by saying 'wah wah my opinion, your opinion'.

The Escapists review of Duke Nukem was terrible, as its reviews are of most games that aren't Kirby or Super Mario or other children's games.

All that aside, I have never played Duke Nukem before, picked up the new one on a whim and am enjoying it so far. Convinced some of my mates to give it a shot and they are enjoying it to.

If you want to play a game that is actually fun, and you can have a bit of a laugh at then give it a shot.

i think all of you must think over this thing here, would you consider it a bad game if it where released 12 years ago?

How dare you like the game when lots of other smarter critics than you have panned it? You're not allowed your own opinions and you're clearly not allowed to find a game fun when it are "srs art biznes nao"

Also how dare you enjoy a colourful, speaking protagonist when he can never compare to Gordon Freeman who wears glasses?

AND more importantly, how dare you post your very opinion on this forum, which is so dependent on the words of other people that individuality has died!

Shame on you sir.

I don't really get why you care so much about what critics and other people think of the game, how in any way does it affect the enjoyment that you get from the game. People have different tastes in games and are entitled to their own opinions. I personally loved DNF, but I don't expect everyone to feel the same way as me about it and it doesn't bother me in the least.

Meh never really liked it to begin with and I remain indifferent though with all of it's charm and wit I'm still appauled by this games develpment time for the game that was made. So, right now I'm waiting for Yahtzee to review the real game, and hope that he is as critical as ever.

Yes, the game is a poor mix of random mechanics that don't work well together and some that just don't fit the concept of a Duke Nukem game at all. Some of these decisions were made purely because it made development easy (extreme linearity, two weapon loadout, regenerating 'ego'). It's not really all that surprising either since it changed hands so many times, but it's disappointing that something so poor got released. That's not to say it doesn't have it's quirks (interactivity), but the humour from what I've seen either completely misses the mark or (in the case of the alien hive) isn't merely offensive but simply something only a sadist would find amusing. DNF is a bad game. This doesn't mean some won't overall enjoy it, but they'll enjoy it in spite of it being a bad game.

Hey Duke Here is your power armor (Master chief's outfit) "power armor is for pussies" he says.

One guy ran up too me looking like Marcus pheonixsaying howhe had to find a fags dead wife for 8hours lolololol

" Thats one deaddd space marine" Duke says to a soldiers body with the dead space helmet on haha
It cannot be said these jokes are objectively funny. You may find them funny, but that is entirely subjective. The thing is that's ok, if you are offended when your opinion isn't validated by a review or a comment it's because you're not secure in your opinion to begin with. I frankly find these 'jokes' to be nothing more than cheap pop culture references that would not enhance my enjoyment, but break immersion (if you want to see pop culture references enhance a game play Fallout 1/2 or New Vegas with the Wild Wasteland perk).

No, it was absolute garbage. I've played through it, and I found it to be an absolutely irredeemable piece of shit. Apparently, more people think it was bad than good. A quick look at Metacritic is a good indicator.
weren't you pony guys all about love? ...

on topic ..

personally being in the 20+ category i liked it, the intro music alone gave goosebumps, blatant fan service to people like me and it worked. It was just a nostalgia trip and it WORKED, some of the pop culture references were funny others were worth a smile cause they reminded me of the old days.

Everyone talks about the walltits, i didnt even see them and i only knew about the poo throwing cause it was on a loadscreen. Havent seen anyone talk about punching Christian Bale guy in the face, wonder how many people just repeat what theyve read instead of experiencing stuff themselves.

In the end i much prefer dodging a barrel a flying octopus throws at me than shooting yet another asian/arab/russian/nazi

I think you have to play it understanding where it comes from and why, and many reviewers haven't given it enough credit for that. Obviously it isn't worth full price. and it's not a flawless game - needed more interesting meddling with the environment and so on.

But I found it entertaining. It has more creative and interesting environments than most shooters these days. In particular I LOVED the bit where you have to run around a DukeBurger restaurant whilst shrunken. Shootouts with dual-wielding pig cops on food shelves, taking cover behind giant jars of ketchup and mustard which shatter satisfyingly when they catch a bullet was great! I also don't understand the objections the escapist's review had to the physic puzzles - stuff like that meant the game reminded me of half-life 2, and that game is still the best single-player FPS I've ever played.

Yeah it's pretty fugly, and the regenerating health and two-weapon limit is stupid. But buy it cheap and remember that you're playing a 2002 FPS, and you should have fun. I'd rather play something with original environments and inventive touches than yet another brown/grey near-future FPS.

I didn't "pick on Halo" I liked it when it first came out, but Master Chief gets no character... Now Dukes character is a reflection of goof-ball macho early 90's action films. I loved them but I see why some people won't "get it". The shootingis the same as Halo, enemies charge, you charge right back. Not a cover shooter I mean like ever FPS is these days
I hate the phrase: "get it." It implies a level of ignorance, that most of the time, isn't there.

For example, my five year old niece has just discovered Fat princess on my PS3. She knows that if she hits X over "play with yourself," she will be playing a game by herself. She doesn't "get it." When my mother came by, she saw the screen and gave me a look like she was going to flay me alive. She got it...but didn't like it.

Duke wasn't funny to me when it first came out. Now over a decade later, it's only gotten worse. There's no shame in saying a game is bad when you think it's bad.

All opinions are not made equal and considering it's Russ Pitts job to review games...

Honestly I also think the game is alot better than people are giving it credit for. I also think alot of people are just joining the band wagging and bitching cause that's what the internet is for. It is a fun game if you give it a chance. But now that it's popular to exclaim your disgust in it and trade it in immediately I think alot of people are missing out on a fun game. I also wonder how many people who got the game actually played the early ones cause the humour was always deliberately bad to some degree and the game play was always a rip off of other shooters at the time.

... Your fanboy is showing.

really the game sucks cock, there is nothing good about it, gameplay is bland and repetitive, graphics are shit house, I had to turn off the DoF effects just so I could see what the fuck was happening.

Its not a classic shooter, it IS a cover based shooter, yeah you can run out like nuts a little, but stay outside for to long and you'll find your face on the pavement, duck behind a rock for a few seconds and bam your as good as new. Go have a look at the series sam games or even duke 3d if your after classic shooters. You pretty much wont find any cover, a shit ton of guns to carry ALL AT ONCE, you'll find health packs and armor as well as a much better time.
This.

If I wanted classic shooting, tons of weapons and ammo to carry to make an entire army blush, running around like a madman destroying everything in my path, I'd play the Serious Sam series. After having another go at Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter after I finished Duke Nukem Forever, it was clear to me that Duke had lost most of the fun factor and hasn't stayed true to its classic shooting roots.

Perhaps it's just me, but DNF's "humour" would of appealed to me if I was still 12. At 20, every fucking thing that came out of Duke's mouth made me want to curbstomp his face.

The thing I find weird is the fact that everyone who says they like it don't say why they like it, they just say 'I like it, it's fun' yet people who don't like it give a long list of things that turned them off the game, things which made it boring, things which made it awkward, bad gameplay choices etc etc.

Edit: Originally, this was one huge ass rant a thon, but now its just a straight up opinion on it.

Ok, first, DNF, is very, very mediocre, and is very much bad for not delivering on what was promised, so what it tries to do is rip off any modern, tactical shooter, duke it up a little, and then add in jokes, which doesn't work at all, the gameplay is out right shit, Serious Sam 3 will at least be straight up about what we will find in the game, and will probably be what DNF should have been, but wasn't.

Second, the whole "They just don't get it." phrase is just an excuse to block flaws, and it never holds up well anyways.

So there, I cut down a large rant to what it short version, enjoy your day.

AH HA!! I HAVE A INDIE GAME FOR THAT!! AND ITS FREE!!

I do suggest Reimagine for this example, but it does have a lot of pop culture refrneces with actual funny humour of it. I suggest checking it out only to prove that pop culture refrences can actually make a game better.

Gasp! You thought it was good? But... But other people thought it was bad! How can this be?! What possible phenomenon could be at the source of this witchery?

Another Thread thwarted by...
Opinions!

What really bugs me is that most reviews I've seen so far have cited the games long development cycle, outdated graphics, outdated gameplay and irritatingly long loading screens as negatives when, in my opinion at least, only the latter is a legitimate criticism.
The... extended development cycle can't be helped at this point and a game shouldn't be marked down for this.
The outdated graphics are similar to this and would you honestly want them to potentially take another three or so years to redesign it AGAIN when they're pretty much already run out of money?
The "outdated" gameplay served to me as a refresher and honestly I think people are playing it like a CoD title, pistols being pieces of shit, shotguns being effective at under a metre and so on.
I see the point on the loading screens, I ended up dreading them at the time as I went through on "Come Get Some". Especially in that Dam Top boss battle.
