Duke Nukem is fun and funny, shame on Escapist

Ok, before I HEAR A MILLION... It suck please play through it first. (small duke in car thingy was hard lame at first but still funny) If you never played the old games I can see why you wouldn't like it but I am digging it alot. Kinda bland at first, but environment changes from casinos, to Ocean bases to alien hives...Just good classic shooting. Not worth hype and the price tag but I'm glad I bought it, hell Its just funny as hell. Its almost REFRSSHING to have Duke back as a character after playing soooo many failed attempts at makingbland shooters dramatic *points to Gears of War!* Basically the shooting is just like Halo, but I'd argue Duke is a better character then Chief by far.

I realllyyyy hope they do another Duke game, one that didn't have to be just a vamped up 1998 shooter with updated graphics, but I like what it is... for what it tried to do. I mean Gearbox said WE ARE JUST FINISHING WHAT TOOK 12 YEARS to do. It has old style shooting which is alot of dumb enemies charging at you, but after the initial problems I find alot to enjoy here.

See, this is the problem. It's just an updated 1998 shooter running on nostalgia. It's just not very good. It's fine if you had fun with it, but from an objective standpoint, everything in it is dated. duke hasn't aged well, the jokes are funny, but the game can't run on that, and the game play is dated but not retro enough, ala Painkiller.

They're judging it not by what they're trying to do, but by any criteria that any 60$ game is judged nowadays.

I didn't "pick on Halo" I liked it when it first came out, but Master Chief gets no character... Now Dukes character is a reflection of goof-ball macho early 90's action films. I loved them but I see why some people won't "get it". The shootingis the same as Halo, enemies charge, you charge right back. Not a cover shooter I mean like ever FPS is these days

classic shooting: Here I MEANT that its not cover based like Gears or Call of Duty.. or every new FPS these days. Enemies teloport around, or charge and you run/ dodge and shoot or punch or throw feces back.

I suppose before people yell at me for this, I should edit that my point is that you can't just say it's funny. You supported why you think it's fun (at least to an extent), but not funny. Why is it funny? Because, to be honest, I haven't seen a single bit of the gameplay or trailers that I would consider funny.

I never expected much, but even with the bar set on the damn floor, I was still shocked at the choice of level design and the colour pallet used. A section in a sewer (however small), a goddamn construction yard, boring sterile corridors. I don't feel like I am playing a Duke game. The gameplay is boring.

You only have 2 weapons, you can't sprint for more than a few seconds without Duke wheezing like an old man, and...well, the game is the most generic piece of shit I have played in a while. You could say that Duke 3D was generic at the time, but at least they put some effort into the level design and the multiple ways you could approach it.

The game is boring, plays like crap, and should've been released in 2002. GBX's previous games were all great, except this one. No need to make excuses to justify your spent money if you enjoyed it, but don't go making claims that simply aren't true.

really the game sucks cock, there is nothing good about it, gameplay is bland and repetitive, graphics are shit house, I had to turn off the DoF effects just so I could see what the fuck was happening.

Its not a classic shooter, it IS a cover based shooter, yeah you can run out like nuts a little, but stay outside for to long and you'll find your face on the pavement, duck behind a rock for a few seconds and bam your as good as new. Go have a look at the series sam games or even duke 3d if your after classic shooters. You pretty much wont find any cover, a shit ton of guns to carry ALL AT ONCE, you'll find health packs and armor as well as a much better time.

It's not that we have a problem with the humor, Duke is funny, though too childish sometimes. Its the game play that we have a problem with, Duke just took way to long to make for it to just be halo with naked ladies thrown in sometimes. Plus if you buy a game just for humor, then why not go buy a comedy movie instead.

i'm agreeing with this thread we set our expectations to high and our expectations changed around 2000 so cut duke some slack.
It's still a good game it just isn't what we where expecting from such a long dev time.

How is it classic shooting?

How is it not?

Yes, the health bar regenerates, yes, you can only have two weapons at once (not including the Pipe bombs, trip mines and holo-dukes), but these aren't all that classic shooting was.

Classic shooting had a specific feel to it, one that I think Duke carries across. On the lower difficulty levels, you played run and gun, not bothering to hide behind cover because you could soak up some damage, and you did better running than standing in enemy fire. It was mobile. It was fast. On higher difficulty levels, you hid in cover more often as enemies could sometimes one hit you, then it became more about knowing the room, and knowing where to run to to have cover from bullets temporarily.

Modern FPSs place you behind chest high walls, and make everything a near 1 shot kill, even on normal. It isn't very mobile, and relies on 'duck in cover, pop out of cover, shoot, duck in cover'.
This is not what duke does (except in some cases, but you would usually take cover in these situations anyway, and use a healthpack instead of waiting to regen). In duke, on the lower difficulties, you are running and gunning, barely standing still, dodging enemies and firing stupid weapons. Yes, your only allowed two of them, and I would have preferred to have more than two in most cases, but that is not what classic shooting is. Its about the feel, and how you play.
