Assassin's Creed. I just started a new game, rode into Damascus and saved a citizen being harassed by guards. The guy thanks me for killing the guards, takes one look at the bodies and says "Who cold have done this?".

Then again, at least those NPCs notice a dead body...

Incompetence, thy name is Sheva.

In all actuality, I'd suggest Garrus from Mass Effect, but Resident Evil 5 is fresh on my mind.

Dead Rising has been said before, but more specifically the survivors when you finally get multiple survivors to the security room without miraculously dieing for various reasons, they can't figure out how to get up the dam ledge, if they're more then two of them grab a bag of Doritos cause it might take a lil while. just hope you don't have a mission you have to get to cause saving their retarded asses probably cause you to fail to show up ><

Oh man and the fact in the whole entire game you're strapped for time the last thing you need is two retards bumping into each other face first into each other in some hope to be up the ledge first.

they walk and fly right off the cliff. More than any dumb AI in modern games could ever accomplish.

@Blackadder51: I was planning to, but my internet has been doing weird things. I posted on another forum and it came out webdings. i was going to edit it after i fixed it but i forgot. Thanks for reminding me. :)

Dead Rising.

I gave a guy a baseball bat and watched as he accidentally beat his friend to death.

Then if you give them shotguns they'll end up one-hit-killing the other survivors.

TThe Call of Duty series. There is no AI, its all scripted.
I really hated this. In CoD4 there was a point where I decided to mid-range snipe everyone and cover my AI team-mates during the enemy assault. Little did I know that if I never pushed the enemy backward that they would have an infinite supply of troops. I must have been sniping for about 20 minutes before I ran out of all my bullets and decided to trudge forward with my knife. I went to a building across the street, which was also toward the enemy, and cleared it out so I could resume sniping from a new position. Soon as I did that, the enemies stopped spawning from where near I now was and were now spawning from somewhere further up the road.

This really ruined CoD campaign for the rest of the game for me. It then became less about any tactics, and more about run, gun, push forward, win. It got boring very very quickly after that.

MP is still fun though.

Because AI dont get you game sales, graphics do, so the companies focus on pritty explosions rather than proper AI, why do you think its getting harder to find a decent coop game?

Mercenaries 2. I don't want to go through and see if anyone said this already, but seriously. The AI is just atrocious. Half the time they can't do something as simple as get in a vehicle even if they're standing right next to the door and you're honking the horn every second.

The AI from Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. They will attack nothing at times and may go in the wrong direction from where your objective is.

Oblivion, probably. At one point, I was crouched, and using a bow with hopes of getting the jump on an extremely tough opponent. Suddenly, as soon as I moved forward, my ally rushed him, dying instantly, and alerting the monster to my presence.

Fallout 3 has some pretty awful friendly AI at times. There was a time when my companion opened a cage with a behemoth inside of it went inside and tried to kill it with her hammer. Not only did she get herself killed, she completely ruined any chance I had of killing it :(.

"You know an enemy is standing right beside you?"

"Meh, He doesn't bother me"

Or maybe:

*Stabs guy in the chest*

*guys friends continue to shoot at the guys 30 feet behind me*

*stab guys firends*
Really? I've had the problem of where they will only shoot at me.

They do the amazing immersion element of having squadmates die as you watch them run into a machine gun five feet in front of them, and then kind of ruin it all by 1) letting the player kill them by stabbing just to the right of their head and 2) having all the AI aim for you once most of the cannon fodder is dead. Which they normally are by the climactic level finalle.

Mind it is fun if you manage to time a run into the enemy lines right so all your squadmates follow you in and do most of the work for you.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that :O It doesn't matter how shit it is, if I manage to run through the enemy lines, THEY can too. If I do the stupid thing of running up to the enemy, soon enough they will too.

And the part where they don't shoot at me was when I played co-op. But the guy was still 30 feet away.
Ahh, I see. But that's fewer bullets for you while you're running into their lines so your invincible NPC allies can walk in there, stumble a few times, and then shoot them all while you hide in a hole regenerating health.

But what possibly annoys me more than the poor targeting system is when your allies PUSH YOU OUT OF COVER. Each NPC has a specific place to go at each stage and if you are already there, then they will push you into the fire lane. Or worse, they will wait untill you move out to take some shots and then take your place so you get left in the open to die. It's not even like you can 'bump' them into the open so you can take cover behind them because, although they can bump you, you can't bump them.

Someone praised the A.I. for CoD5 in a review somewhere. Can't remember who though..

Assassins creed civilian dummies.

1) They don't know how to look up
2) They watch you kill people and just walk by
3) They say "get him" when you're miles away
4) They ramble to themselves
5) they tell you to get down from the walls, but have no abilities to do anything about it

Left 4 Dead.
Once I was playing campaign mode with one friend, two AI.. got pulled off a building by a smoker. What do the AI do?
THEY FOLLOW ME OFF THE EDGE
all three of us are incapped, once he's done with the horde he saves the AI but I die first.
I've also had countless moments where I was approaching a witch to crown her, and then she jumps up and runs right past me to kill the AI, and then sits in a corner screaming until I get to her.

The real issue isn't, I think, the AI itself. The issue rests in that, in newer games, you ask much more of AIs, due to the more complex tasks to be played out. And AI hasn't improved enough to keep up with that.
