Maybe YOU don't run your games like a mafia boss...

My DM has a bad (But hilarious) habit of killing off/mortally wounding/embarassing/crippling/raping with wild boars characters when the player gets uppity. He usually reintroduces new ones for the player, though.

Afterthought: Actually, if I could spend all day playing DnD in jail and somehow avoid getting raped/shanked, I might hold up a bank and get a few free years of relaxation.

Shame about the shanking, though.

Quick prison guy, do a saving throw against the banishment dealt by the evil Warden to protect your precious D&D

the Dm compared to a gang leader... that's hilarious I mean think about it. the gang generally follow their leader. In D and D the players are doing all the can to defy him.

D&D encourages gang behavior - hah!

This article would be funny, if it wasn't for the fact that our prisons actively permit and encourage gang activity among the prisoners because it keeps them divided against each other.

That aside, to those who argue that the man's in prison so therefore he doesn't deserve to play D&D, your argument would have merit IF that was in any way what our courts had ruled. But it wasn't. Because the US prison system doesn't deny prisoners recreation - in fact it specifically permits it. Prisoners get to play basketball, watch tv (in some), and work out, but they don't get to play D&D - it's nonsensical.

That said, with all these prisoners and porn stars playing D&D these days, I feel cool and bad-ass.

EDIT: Upon further reading, I stand corrected. The Court did in fact rule, in part, that the prisoner lost the case because "punishment is a fundamental aspect of imprisonment, and prisons may choose to punish inmates by preventing them from participating in some of their favorite recreations."

Look, being in prison is punishment enough. I suppose you also would like all the blankets and matressess removed, the library locked up, and the food to be pure unflavored gelatin with some vitamin additions?

Let the Cons play their D&D, whatever it was they did. They'll just play poker or cards or shiv-the-skinhead or abuse-the-molester instead anyways. Large numbers of the people in prisons are small-time weed dealers, 3-strike offenders who shoplifted 3 times, or ignorant and violent inner-city morons who know nothing else.

He explained that the policy [of banning D&D] was intended to promote prison security because cooperative games can mimic the organization of gangs and lead to the actual development thereof. Muraski elaborated that during D&D games, one player is denoted the "Dungeon Master." The Dungeon Master is tasked with giving directions to other players, which Muraski testified mimics the organization of a gang.
The DM only sets up the scenario... He spends a lot of time telling my group what not to do, but he can't give orders... They obviously haven't played, but did they even read the manual?

I thought they would've banned it because you could sharpen the figurines' weapons into weapons...

They're lethal if you stab people in the right place!
Not all prisoners face heavy restrictions on their basic possessions.

The prison I visited had barracks-style living arrangements for prisoners considered to be well-behaved. They got to have a moderate amount of, you know, actual stuff -- books and posters and things. There was a shared TV, too.

You don't really need minis for D&D, anyway.

Not unlike ANY other organisational structure... Hehe. Oh well, if you're in prison you shouldn't expect your rights to be respected in principle or in practice, nor should you think that your rights extend to anything that could be remotely called a luxury item while incarcerated.

Can someone name even one gang member or Mafia dude who ever rolled a six sided die, let alone knows what an Orc is?

This dude's reasoning is as dumb as some of China's reasons for banning certain movies.

I was kinda thinking it would say that prisoners were stringing up the dice & using them as anal beads. lol.

Make the prison guards watch a game of D&D, and THEN tell us the dungeon master is in control of the players. Jesus.

Well... personally I think most of the reasons they gave are total bullshit, but anyone who has ever played it should admit that sometimes things get a bit... heated... and these people have already proven they have impulse control issues by being in jail... I once swore the most kind hearted woman I know threaten to "fuck you up" her husband if he rolled against her for a staff... and I don't think she was kidding.

What's the point of sending criminals to prison just so you can turn it into summer camp for them? Take the dice away and make people realise that prison is a punishment that you want to avoid. Alternatively just give them all the death penalty and free up some room.

This is basically just another unfounded idiotic attack on D&D. Gangs? Seriously. Yeah, like I'm going to "shank" someone because I play the odd round of D&D.

How do these people get to be so damn important enough to ban things, but stupid enough to ban things for really stupid reasons.

It makes no sense!
