I think it's about time DMC got a reboot anyway.
I've always been a fan of the original games yes, from their design elements to the rather anime-ish characters and monsters, but to be fair only TWO of the four games were ever any good (1 and 3 respectively) so I can't say they're hitting it out of the park.
Maybe the new direction will hit on something fresh? I can certainly hope so.

Plus, an excuse to retcon Virgil back into the mix.

still looking forward to this game, i could probably liked a complete reboot, but doesn't look like that will be the case.

my real concern is that with everyone being whiny bitches about them changing his look, that they will buckle under pressure and just end up making another DMC4

He kinda looks like Nero in a few shots, in the most freakish of ways.

While there's quite a few things about the trailer and the world and such that bug me, it's a reboot, and the setting is kind of curious, seeing as how there's a slight allusion to the Demon's seemingly controlling the city, if not more. That could be neat.

As for what actually matters... The combat looks fantastically fast and stylish so far. Lots of classic moves. I can see air rave, stinger, everything like that in there, there's a lot of footage of the new Scythe weapon, which can seemly be used as a long range grab... Dunno how I feel about that. Looks like they're reworking Devil Trigger to be a sword of "rage mode" that lasts a very sword time but turns you into a god, I guess that's okay, but we'll have to see the final version and how it works in gameplay to be sure, as well as what enables you to activate it...

It's also either a skilled player playing or they've done what I'd hope they'd do and they've merged all of Dante's classic moves into one core moveset, as in, it controls more like a fighting game, so you don't go trickster, then press circle in the air and you can airdash, there is no trickster anymore. You're Dante, with all his moves and no micromanagement, the way it always should have been.

I'm still reeeeeeeeally hoping the guns are actually meaningful now, it almost looks like Dante uses a finishing move early on when he airjuggles an enemy with his guns, I dunno how I'd feel about finishing moves, we'll have to wait for more footage.

Overall? After not hearing anything about this game since GDC last year? Good to see it didn't get cancelled...looking forward to seeing a lot more.

Though the person who is really excited this a retelling of the story from the books? Lols. Those books are so full of contradictions it's hilarious. Dante made Ebony and Ivory himself, for example.

...this Dante just came across as an annoying punk, a weak looking one at that, so he just sounded like he was only acting tough instead of actually being tough.
That's exactly what I LIKE about this character. He's not an adult with years of experience and strength behind him, he's a punk kid with emo and ignorant bravado only outweighed by a bad attitude. Nobody likes that guy. And that's why I can't wait to play the story of how Dante grew out of him.
Dude, this is a Team Ninja game, not freakin' Bioware. I wouldn't expect a story any deeper than a kiddie pool.
On the plus side the pool will be surrounded by women with extreme jiggle physics, I think if their rebooting for this character devil trigger should be changed to heroin overdose, fits him more.

the only real apprehension i had with ninja theory's was their use of controls in the past. they never felt completely on point. the game-play in the trailer looks promising. here's hoping it stays promising on release.

as it states at the beginning of the trailer, it's a work in progress, so the graphics and animations are not how they will be in the final product

This sounds like the same excuse Metroid: Other M fans give. "They can do what they want with their game" is as childish as it gets. If you want to something with someone else's established universe and characters, stick to them. Otherwise, MAKE A DIFFERENT GAME! Don't put your ideas onto someone else's character.
A couple things;

1. Yes, Team Ninja could make whatever game they wanted with Metroid. The fact that it was a bad game, with atrocious characterization of Samus, is only an unfortunate byproduct. We gave Team Ninja a chance, nobody declared it sucked outright. Just after it was released.
2. We have seen barely anything of the new DMC and yet people are crying out as if it is the end of the franchise.
3. In reboots, it is common to change some stuff to fit context and experiments in gameplay.
4. In origin stories, it is common for the main character to undergo some changes so we see how he becomes the one we all know and love.
5. Ninja Theory (nearly typed Team Ninja there, bleh! Names!) are sticking with Dante's universe, they're telling an origin story of how Dante became Dante. Some changes along the way, sure.
6. So it's childish to go "They can do what they want with the game, Capcom wouldn't give it to them if they didn't think they would do a good job. Let's be patient and see how it plays out" but perfectly reasonable to go "Fagja Assory! Thank you for RUINING the franchise! NINJA THEORY SUX, THIS GAME WILL SUX" (a lovely paraphrased sample from the YouTube comments)? Okay then, I guess I am the true child.
7. DMC was always about gameplay. We have seen barely 30 seconds of continuous gameplay, and yet people are making broad assumptions of how the gameplay is supposedly "slow" and "clunky", and again people are saying it sucks right off the bat.
8. People are calling the new Dante "emo" and I really don't get that. Again, we've seen little of him and all we have going for "emo-ness" is his slightly foppish hair. The reveal and this trailer make him look like a badass, I think.

Is it that hard to see how everyone is overreacting (myself included, if you want to go there)? For all we know, this game could be solid gold, or it could suck donkey testicles. We don't know. But people are jumping the gun so quickly about this game just because they don't like the new Dante. If it sucks, it sucks, but even if it was good fans would still rabidly say it sucks.

The only arguement I've heard in defense of this game is that "Well, he'll be the cool Dante in the end because Capcom said this game will be canon and it is how he became what he is."

My responce is "Fine, that's all cool... but we still have to play an ENTIRE game with this sadistic asshole."

In other news, I heard Capcom is releasing a MOVIE with the same premise as the game. In other words THEY ARE LITERALY MAKING ANOTHER TWILIGHT MOVIE.

Assuming that he grows out of that attitude in the story then thats fine, I won't mind him being the way he is shown, but if the theme of this trailer is too be followed it sounds more like we'll see this Dante even at the end, which wouldn't be very good.

Default reply.

I realise it's only alpha but, the gameplay is sluggish, the graphics look dated, the colour pallete is oversaturated, the art direction is... interesting at least, the demons look less
set piece-y.

But I'd still be happy as longs as it's a separate universe but still includes Vergil.

Seeing as it's a new game with a new story and characters, I kinda wish they would actually design a new character instead of bastardizing the old one.

Some fans are still complaining that this breaks with canon, and that Dante was always supposed to have white hair, but part of me thinks that people who are sticklers for canon in a series about fighting demons in the most over-the-top form fashionable are kind of doing it wrong to begin with.
Not necessarily a break in Cannon more along the lines of retelling the RARELY TOLD story of Tony Redgraves and how he became the Dante everyone knows. It looks interesting and is actually trying to stay current with the story. That's what I like about this trailer. It's actually trying add on to the story rather than just give a half-assed reboot.

So no I don't think this breaks cannon all that much as I've been dying to see what Dante did before he became an official demon hunter. Sorry it's impossible to find the books anywhere that's why.

So I may be skeptical but I can at least look at this trailer and smile knowing that they made an improvement
What who is Tony Redgraves? that's not Dante is it? that was never Dante's name his farther was Sparda a demon who rebelled against Mundus the emperor of the underworld and trapped him there to save humanity, after that Sparda reverted to a human form (look it up) and married a human witch, who bared him twin sons named Dante and Virgil, later some fanatics tried to open hell on earth using the old relic Teminegru but Sparda stopped them but had to sacrifice a mortal priestess and his own demon power to seal the tower and split that power up in three thing his sword which was the lock and two amulets which were the keys that he gave to his sons shortly after that some fanatics killed Sparda and his wife hence why Virgil believes in gaining power because he believes his dad was not strong enough and Dante became a reclusive resenting humans for what they did after what his dad did for them he only ever hung round Virgil and spoke to him over time Dante starting seeing things differently to Virgil and they went separate ways on their birthday never to see each other till DMC3 there is the back-story he was never human born or called Tony he was born from a witch and a demon hence the devil trigger ability and not a permeate state of either demon or human only his farther and Virgil can do what he does sort of shifting, but his dads true form was the demon wheres Dante and Virgil's was human.

Read both the Devil May Cry Novels. It's a brief history of Dante and how he went by the Alias of Tony Redgraves. This all took place a little over a year before Devil May Cry 3. Some stuff happened and Dante ended up working with a guy who covered his whole face in Bandages and went by the name Gilver who later was revealed to be Vergil (DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING XD).

Long Story Short, it showed what caused Dante and Vergil to go at it in DMC 3 and how he went by the Alias of Tony Redgraves. Look it up.
