So two of the most despicable Entities known to the Videogame World fight each other.

Both Companies have set back the entire Medium questionable Advertisement and Business Practices bordering legal Limits. Both Companies have done heavy Damage to the medium "Videogames".

I'm fairly certain that if these Companies would vanish from the Face of the Earth the Videogames World would be better off.

And now we have a new Advertisement which can barely be considered "childish".

I don't have a problem with this ad; it's no different from, say, the dig at Duracell that the Energizer Bunny was intended to be (look it up; it's a fascinating bit of history.) When you're in a highly competitive market, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging your top competitor; sometimes saying "we're really good" doesn't, in and of itself, get out the message that "we're better than the other guys."

Then again, I thought the "Your mom will hate this game" ad was a brilliant and hilarious piece of marketing aimed at adults who were children during the videogame violence hysteria in the 90's, and gamers (yes, including the Extra Credits guys) showed their insecurity and immaturity by making a big deal out of it, so what do I know?

Edit: Okay, after watching it, the song choice was a bit sophomoric. We get it guys, gamers don't have girlfriends. Please don't rub it in :p

Having just saw the new tv spot for bf3, and having seen the new tagline. Which is "above and beyond the call", and obvious dig at CoD. Seriously EA and/or Dice, this is just starting to be you attacking the CoD series like a little kid, the tagline might as well say "buy bf3, because CoD is a pile of doody. Say What you want about CoD or Activision, when was the last time they purposefully attacked any game EA has made, and does Activision do already on disc DLC or online codes, no they dont.

Heres my source: http://kotaku.com/5843892/battlefield-3s-latest-tv-spot-goes-above-and-beyond-the-call

So Escapees, what do you think of this blatantly childish tagline?
Its nothing new in marketing. People have been doing this for years and not just in the gaming industry. Burger King often mocks McDonalds and Wendy's burgers claiming their too small. Pepsi has almost always been trying to shake the floor beneath Coke a Cola and even several breweries attack other breweries about their brewing techniques. Its nothing new and it isn't childish, its just business.

Well it's official; Developer and Publishers are becoming fanboys and making the gaming community look bad. First their was the whole "E.A attacking Activision" when Activision just wanted to be friendly competitions, and E.A took that as an insult and said that they were gonna "Take activision and Call of Duty down.", Then their was Cliffy B. acting selfish when Eurogamer and Destructoid gave Gears 3 an 8 out of 10 and calling them "Haters", and now this shit. Look, it's one thing to appreciate your fans support, it's another to act like the over obsessive fans or start saying things like that. We saw this in the 90's with SEGA making commercials saying "Genesis does what Nintendon't" and now it's happening again. Also, remember who won that little war in the 90's, who's now a third party developer, and who's mascot got terrible games since 2005 to 2010, and has the worst fanbase ever? I needn't say more.

Gee, one giant Publishing Company 'attacking' (and that is a very big stretch) another giant Publishing Company. I hope they don't hurt each other!!!

And no, I won't be playing these 'serious' FPS shooters, there's enough of them out there!

[EDIT] Well, I admit it wasn't that childish, but its just the fact they used 99 problems as their song, and 99 problems to me is a terrible song. Also, if you were to look into it further you could say that the ***** is actually CoD, so they might be saying that CoD is not a problem to them. Or that's just me over thinking things
There's no such thing as over-thinking marketing. Every single thing in a commercial is very carefully planned and has a reason to be there. That's why companies spend millions on advertising.

Really? Really?? Really???

As has been mentioned in the previous posts, companies take little shots like this all the time. MAC & PC, Coke & Pepsi, Verizon & AT&T, Verizon & Comcast. WWE decides to refer to themselves as "sports entertainers" instead of wrestlers, & rival TNA starts adveritsing themselves as a company "where wrestling matters". Sega released commercials advertising that the Genesis does what "Nintendon't".

I remember back when Madden '05 came out, one of the gameplay pictures on the back happened to show cover athlete Ray Lewis "coincidentally" tackling Terrell Owens, cover athlete of their rival, NFL 2k5. What was the response? NFL 2K5's gameplay picture "coincidentally" shows Terrell Owens stiff-arming Ray Lewis to break a tackle. No giant stink was made, and the people who recognized the jab had a little chuckle.

So EA realeases a commercial for Battlefield 3 with a few positive quotes and ends with "ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL" as its tagline.

Is it a shot at Modern Warfare 3? Most likely.
Is it "blatantly childish"? Please! (I'm more surprised that they used an uncensored version of "99 Problems" more than anything).

I think someone's inner fanboyisms just might be seeping to the surface.

Blantantly childish? I wouldn't go that far. They obviously realize who their competition is and are going directly after that part of the market. Tons of other companies in other industries do that as well. So I really don't see the problem here.
Everyone does it so it's not a problem? Um.
Actually, it's not hurting anyone, which is why it's not a problem. But also, everyone does it and nobody complained before. Which makes me think that the OP was just butt-hurt about his favorite game franchise getting slammed by some clever marketing.

seriously though. stop being butthurt. competing companies will do that kind of thing. get over that kind of fanboyism, buy whatever game or games you gonna have fun with, shoot shit in the mouth and don't bother with this silly whining.

Not that big of a deal. It's annoying that the developers are acting like internet fanboy's but it's always been done and always will.

Plus it's kind of amusing.

I agree it is somewhat childish, but then I think this is all part of Battlefield 3's marketing strategy- and for them I'm sure it's a great way to get noticed (we're all giving them essentially free advertising as we speak). As much as people seem to love BF3, Battlefield does have a long way to go if they want to beat MW3 simply because Modern Warfare has such a strong established fan base, especially with casual gamers who might not get the significance of a new Battlefield game. People are picking up just because it says 'Modern Warfare'.

Therefore, an up and coming game like Battlefield 3 is alright to pick on a long established titan like Modern Warfare- I don't think it would work quite so well in the reverse.

No, im not butt hurt. I love Battlefield and I love CoD, it just seems to me that EA have continuasly been attacking Activision and CoD, first with the whole Battlefield will bring CoD down, and second with this. If Activision fires back at this then I will be annoyed at them attacking Battlefield. Also, as someone above stated, Sega's whole advertising campaign was attacking Nintendo and look where they ended up. Still, what did CoD do to deserver being attacked by another company just because its popular.

Just grab some popcorn and hope it will turn into a Jerry Springer episode and some drinks.

Relax people, you'll forget it before the end of the month anyway.

although i dont really like their marketing strategy, i dont blame them one bit. their goal is to absolutely crush activision in this shooter battle, and they know they have the better game.

its the same as when Apple used to have those Justin Long Mac ads that ripped apart Microsoft in every single ad. i didnt like that either, but they are just trying to be aggressive.

this type of thing is in plenty of competitor's advertisements, but people only take offense to it when its in the gaming industry. people say its childish what EA is doing, and of course that is a perfectly acceptable opinion. my opinion is that until we stop taking offense to things in this industry that all other industries do on a daily basis, the gaming industry itself will always be "childish"

Am i the only one who hates both?
Ontopic: Their idea of marketing is an 8 year old's idea of how to be cool on xbox, which is kind of iroinic since the audience that they are meant to be targeting are much more mature than that.

As a ad campaign: Its trying to take people away from CoD to battlefield, which won't work, even relative numbers show that.

As stupid: Its really juvenile to say the least. They will BARELY attract anyone by taking hits on their competitor. I would have gotten it if Origin wasn't there. And they so far just pissed on the PC crowd of things.

Actually they are targeting kids, they already have a lot of mature players, now they want all the kids that play CoD.

And if you think about it, the BF3 community is filled with kids that just go to random videos of games and troll with comments like "OMG1!1! BF3 W1LL T0TALLY B3 B3TT3RRR!!1!eleven!!", I am starting to hate the BF community and I haven't played BF3 yet.

Why not do it? It works, its effective, its profitable and its pretty entertaining if you're into that sort of humour. Besides, both of those shooters are for man children anyway. (I should know, i'm one of them :p)
