The ending to a game can decide whether the whole expreience of flying helicopters, skydiving, killing hundreds of men, cawling through mud, blowing up buildings, travelling to a deserted island and setting up a cocktail bar is worth it. Sometimes it is, and you walk away from the game feeling a sense of achievement. And sometimes, it isn't.

* SPOILER BELOW! *
An example: Fallout 3 before Broken Steel saved the day. There's nothing more annoying, dissatisfying, and downright stupid than playing through a whole game, only to find that you die at the end.
* SPOILER END! *

Remembering that got me to thinking: what other games are there that end really badly, and can bad endings ruin a game? What better place to ask than here? What do you have to say?
Its all there in the manuel, it SAYS THE GAME WILL END WITH YOUR INEVITABLE DEATH

Try reading more books, They is full of learnin!
I didn't mean that it was unexpected (which it was anyway), what I meant was that I think it killed the game for me. At least until Broken STeel came along.
Fair enough, although i loved the ending - very poetic.

Yeah, it was. i just didn't like the idea of no longer being able to play that character, or play on after the ending.
Hence why you should read the booklet!

Condemned 2.

Started off so scary and fun, then degenerated into cliched nonsense. Sigh.

Fable 2.

Talk about getting all dressed up in kinky lingerie and falling asleep.
I'd have to agree with both of these. That whole other half of Condemned got so stupid when he got his powers...

KOTOR 2.

The last few hours of gameplay were clearly rushed, filled with unexplained plotholes and generally a mis-matched jumble of half-implemented ideas.

Really, upon examining the data within the game but that is not used (such as conversations never shown to player), things make much more sense and are explained in far greater detail. Too bad these were cut form the actual release.

One of the cut scenes includes a discussion between the three droids: G0-T0, the lovable (yet cunning and deceptive) astromech and HK-47 after the crash on the final planet. So much is explained, so much more sense is blown into the situation, yet due to rushed nature of the game ending, we never got to see that.

I've never played NWN2, but that ending beats the piss out of anything I could ever come up with.

Though the ending of Portal was kinda of a WTF? Flying up into the sky? Am I dead? Paraplegic? Did I escape?

I'm not even sure I should be angry because I had such fun playing it.

I'd have to say the ending in Fable 2.

More specifically the ending were you choose the needs of the many. All they do is give you a thank you card and erect a statue of you. That's it.

call of duty 4 who ever played it will under stand

Um, really? I thought that was one of the best parts of the game.

OT: Probably Darkest of Days, because it implied that there would be another one. *shudder*

Shenmue 1 for dreamcast, worst ender ever. I was enraged by this one. All that bullshitting around on the harbor driving forklift only to not get any satisfaction whatsoever. The sequal was horrid and took much to long to come out.

I really, REALLY dont see why are people mad about the ending of fallout 3.

So you died. You are a hero. Be happy about it. The game ENDED. Thats it. You wanna dick around more? Shure, just use a previous save or a new character. Whats the big deal?

The old Fallout 3 ending's worst aspect wasn't that you couldn't see it coming, or that it required a sacrifice. It was how artificial and forced the Big Decision was. One of the developers admitted they thought up the ending before they considered the prospect of henchmen, several of which are A. immune to radiation, B. bound to your will, or C. both.

Artistic and poetic endings are great, but when you have to pound their square form through the round hole of reasonable alternatives, many players will experience what is commonly known as a "Wall Banger."

Half Life 1 , 2. Dude how can u leave these 2 out i just dont understand. In the first Half Life, you killed the mother monster and for then ending you choose to sit with a scary man on the tram or face 1000 monsters.... Sheesh

In Half life 2, when u win everything freezes, man its like the matrix and the G-Man is like the black guy telling you a story
I actualy loved both of those..

Fallout 3, after playing the game with the "this is oblivion with guns" mindset. Having an ending really ruined it, and thanks to that I can't even play the game, I just can't muster up any willpower to actually play it.

I feel compelled to say it again and again and again... VIKING: BATTLE FOR ASGARD.

Graphics ok, open world levels nicely designed, narrative and voice-acting decent, gameplay fun (if a bit stodgy at times) and gore factor appropriate for a game about an armed viking out for goddess-approved vengeance.
AND THEN THE ENDING ALMOST MADE ME BURN THE FREAKING DISC WITH FRUSTRATION!!!

It is really stupid because you don't have to at all. If you are "bad karma" you send her in. If you are "good karma" you should be able to send Faux in since he is immune to radiation and has actually gone into a radiation area for you already! Neutral Karma I guess you let it blow up? There really isn't a middle ground solution for this game.

When you take back the three islands from the various syndicates you learn that the people you work for actually put them into power so your bosses could be put in control of the city and they are trying to do it around the world. Then you do absolutely nothing about it. What the hell!?! *ragequit* No, you are not aloud to do this. There is no closure to this game. I would have been fine with "congrats, you saved the city. Go you!" but that's not what they did. They said "look, there's a plan to take over the world. Not that you are going to do anything about that". I know there is a sequel coming out and you probably do it there but that isn't the point.

I thought they were some of the best endings ever.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!! for Clive Barker's Jericho

OT:pretty cool concept, you can jump around to control different squad members, dark atmosphere, was awesome to play, then at the end the last boss kills the two least important characters, puts you in a boss fight, after which, the evil guy introduced at the start of the game escapes and your squad jumps into a pool of water to escape the collapsing area and then just cuts to the credits.

Prince of Persia: That thing that you are forced to do at the end that undoes anything you did in the game

Final Fantasy X-2 was the worst possible ending for Final Fantasy X. It ended strong then... went on for a whole new game (apparently because fan boys cried alot loudly and contantly enough for SE to decide to release a sequel).

No, see, NWN2's ending is not the worst problem.

The problem is that the ending is not "fixed" in the next NWN2. It's like hi, moving along, forget those guys.

Not like you may have liked any of them or grown attached to them in any way, that'd be silly.
