They'll eventually become computers which you can't do very much on or upgrade though.
They aren't now?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/computer

You could also just put Linux on the PS3.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_3
And you can pop in a new CPU, GPU, or more RAM whenever you please?
Why is that the definition of computer? Man you'd better tell Oxford!

They want us to fight. MS wants people to see themselves as superior to PS3 owners when they buy the Xbox. All you have to do is read their ad copy or the marketing drivel on anything that's packed with the console. Their marketing team and talking heads are one text message away from "OMG BEST EVAR!!!11 FTW!!!one" The hyperbole sickened me; I honestly had to stop reading all the paper packed around my 360 because I felt like a pre-teen was yelling in my ear and jumping on my couch. Anyway, with their talking heads and ad copy the console manufacturers actively create a fanbase rooted in superemacy and idolatry. Word of mouth and all that.

Now, where does the PC fanboy come from? Dell? Alienware? Since most PC fanboys build their own rigs, that's not likely. I think they've picked up that wars are great marketing. Maybe they're looking to go into business for themselves?

for this i must say, there are two kind of people in this war, gamers and followers.

Gamers follow the games and trademarks as for followers they try and keep up with the trend of having a PS3, Wii or even a 360

as for myself i am a gamer, i love games not the console but i do love graphics and you need a console or computer with the power too play such graphics, but the developers think its a war between consoles i think, stop arguing and start making me games before i become intressted in stock-markets

I hate people like you.
"im willing to die for that belife so others may know the glory that is pc gaming!!!!FTW"

Wow understand scarcasm much? Of course im not willing to die for the glory of PC gaming if I was dead how could I play PC games, the statement is absurd in the way it suggests somekind of martyrdom for a platform for gaming.

EDIT*
Forgot to add at home I have a PS3, Wii, DS lite, N64, 2 gamecubes(lost a cable), Snes(yep still works) and one decent PC rig (2.6Ghz AMD dual core, 2gig DDR2 PC2-6400, 2x500gig HDD RAID 0, 9800GTX and ASUS Crosshair motherboard) so it seems that actually I have far more consoles+handhelds than computers.

I am now going to start a civil war with myself.

P.s Just kidding

Whoever said the console Venn diagram line, *claps*.

If you want my opinion, I see the 360 and the PC merging down the line; the differences between the platforms have become very small: 360 controllers can be used very easily on PCs. It's theoretically possible to get a M/KB working on a 360 (the implementation quality is questionable). 360s and PCs (and PS3s) use hard drives to game now more than ever. Games for Windows (if they would get their shit together) would make the front-end difference even more negligible. XBLA and Steam aren't all that different in execution.

Personally, I'd love to sync up a 360 Elite (because it looks badass) and my PC [which already is badass =) ] at home to an epic sound system and HDTV so I can play PC games, 360 games, watch videos, surf the Internet, do work, play music, communicate, and watch TV all from that center. Ultimate media center, here I come!

Well 5 years is far more close to the average lifespan of a console and don't get me wrong but a non upgraded computer wont last 5 years
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_(seventh_generation)
Every console generation except the first one lasted 8 or 9 years. Even if the dates presented on this page are inaccurate, they still give the same average.

Actually I just realised they have quite a lot of overlap so five years is quite accurate but if you enjoyed your previous console you'll get quite a lot of fun out of it.

yes I have plenty of old consoles (see my previous post) I also like playing them on my Pc through emulators another thing i like about the pc is it supports both keyboard/mouse and gamepads, stering wheels, joysticks and the awesome OCZ neural impulse acuator (mind control) for the win! although I will wait for a version 2 because it has problems with body static if you are not earthed interfering with the sensors.
Why can consoles offer full support for mouse and keyboard my ps3 has 2 frontal usb2.0 ports why can't I use them apart from in UT3, shame on sony and especially microsoft a company that pretty much built the computer business I bet its because they know they couldn't get away with the price they sell extra controllers for when a usb Kb/m can be picked up for about £10.
EDIT* damm my poor memory!
Best thing about old consoles is the 50" plasma tv I can hook up to them killer instinct on the snes and split screen 4 player Goldeneye = EPIC WIN!!!

Or you could oh i dunno just port those games to the PC. Seems easier than what you proposed.

The PC is already the ultimate media center as it is.
You can type, watch, talk, listen to everything from anywhere to everywhere.
Yeah, I know. I mean a lot of my issues with the PC as a media platform probably stem from me not doing the implementation more than "The 360 is a better solution." But you can't fault the 360 for doing all of that right out of the box.

A wireless mouse and keyboard would fix the corded problem, and I'd probably get a wireless 360 controller for the sports games.

Yeah, we could port those games to the PC, but we've seen how well that's worked out in the past with Halo 2 and Gears. I just hope that phase was an aberration, though.

Except the couch. Wireless keyboard and mouse doesn't solve that; there's no surface to mouse on if you're reclining back in a comfy sofa and soaking in the game on your big-screen TV. There's a reason consoles went with controllers instead of mouse+keyboard, and until the "PC uber alles" crowd figures that out I'll continue to view them as much the same as the other intellectual pygmies fighting the platform slapwars.

Keep throwing those questions, I'm sure we'll find a problem that's unsolvable.
The fact that you just went to the ends of the earth to do all the stuff consoles can do straight from the box? Why bother, if what you actually want is an experience just like you'd get from a console?

Find a console that supports lan games of dawn of war or diablo 2 or age of empires actually split screen multiplayers seems a little missing compared to previous generations of consoles
EDIT* forgot the Wii

Indeed. Well said.

Attention, platform bigots; the reason there are multiple platforms is that not everyone wants the same experience. Each platform has its benefits and drawbacks; each customer chooses which one suits him/her best. Sweet zombie jeebus, so much powder gets burned over the concept of "free market" in the off-topic forum that I thought people would get this idea.

If you personally prefer a particular platform, good for you. However, that doesn't make the platform any better for someone who doesn't share your taste; please stop insisting that it will, in direct contradiction to everything that the free market has shown.
