I liked Cars. What was so bad about it?

Seriously, you were dropping it into the Transformers vat in this episode and that's really not fair.

Oh dear, the beginning of the end.

...

In a 50 years of great movies followed by ten years of not so great ones, then a revival of more great movies and the buying up and creation of a studio that will do exactly go through exactly the same cycle Disney kinda way

I liked the origional Cars a lot more than I thought I would, so hey if this one's better I guess I'll have to look out for it. I think that Pixar's earned the right by now to a few simple family films in which every line of dialouge and frame of motion isn't some clever in-joke for the adults in the audience. I'm sure they'll be back with that in their next film.

Oh oh! I remember If Looks Could Kill! I loved that movie when I was a kid! ... Which I know doesn't say much about my taste in movies back then... Linda Hunt was my favourite; it's a pity she's mostly been in B-movies.

I used to love If Looks Could Kill like it was some sort of God of Cinema or something, and I know I know how wrong I was, but I loved that movie. Nowadays I realize that alot of that is loving spy movie tropes and the like.

There WAS a Hitchcock film of secret agent mistaken identity that you might be forgetting though, Bob.

Hi,

I'm a 25 year old man who's into cars, and I've seen Cars 3 times.

I'll be seeing this one in theaters for sure... and no, I don't have kids.

Somewhat ok review but I take fault with what Bob said Cars was about, each pixar movie is about way more than what its about Like Toy Story and abandonment and Finding Nemo was growth and moving on. I always felt Cars was about the dying of some the classic parts of Americana like the small roadside town through the lense of Nascar. It seemed to very personal story.
I agree, it seems much more about the struggles of small towns to get by. The NASCAR thing only occasionally comes up and it takes up AT MOST 20% of the film. Plus it had a decent performance by Paul Newman.

This. I found this at the heart of Cars, too. I didn't like it as much as I expected, and it was certainly more geared toward both kids and much older adults, but not to my 20-something generation when I saw it. The loss of history is very much an important thing. My Dad kept saying he wanted to take a road trip across Route 66, and we've never done it. In the global world we live in today, the smaller places around the country are hurting, starved for the attention they used to get.

Unfortunately one of the last.

I hate explaining jokes but this is what I got fro the "Jaguar" thing.

Jaguar is a big cat. Another big cat is a Cougar.

Implying she is a Cougar by making her a Jaguar car.

Not that funny I know but that's what I think it is.
If they were impling that she's a "cougar" why didn't they just make har a cougar?

They needed a foreign car.

Glad that I'm not the only one who believes that Cars is not actually that bad. I like it and I think it's good. However, it's just not Pixar good and that's really what hurt it. It's still good fun and way better than anything Dreamworks have done, though.

As for Cars 2, good review. I'll be sure to check it out when it releases in the UK on July 22nd. By the way: Am I the only one who thinks releasing a film the week after the last Harry Potter movie comes out is a terrible idea?

I did not really like Madagascar.
the only movie that I did like was Shrek
sorry if that offends your lemur friend.
Seen 'How to Train Your Dragon'? I thought it was better than Shrek. But I suppose two or three home runs out of many don't really compare with Pixar's track record.

OT: I think if you grew up in the NE, you probably are missing some key formative experiences involving vehicles in your adolescence: in the South (where I grew up), even the Tri-Lam style geeks could identify makes and models of cars and knew a bit about working on them. Hell, one of the best mechanics I knew was among the biggest drag queens you'd ever meet. How's that for being outside of a stereotype?

Also, did I miss some dry humor/sarcasm here in the bit about the Jaguar? Mortimer is almost 40- Jaguar = Cat = 'Cougar'? I suppose I'll have to watch the movie to see if I'm right. Of course, I'm sure I'll get subjected to it by my nephew.

EDIT: Damn, ninja'd on the cougar thing. But in re:

They needed a foreign car.
Also, Jaguar was originally a British company, and is considered to be curvy and sexy. So twice more appropriate than an American car.

Awww, I was disappointed when I saw that was the movie you decided to review. Makes sense, but I already know I won't see it, so less interesting than it could have been.
I never went to see cars. First, I don't really like cars. I've never had one, I can't drive, and I prefer walking or using a bike, or taking a bus or train.
So, the whole thing never appealed to me, and the sequel is no different. The fact everyone is a car might not matter too much if it was just that, but for what everyone told me, it doesn't even have a strong story or anything, and it's not "cars in a world where humans exist too" (a la toy story, but with cars instead) but "cars instead of humans" and, well, that's less interesting (to me).

Would you mind not reminding us constantly about that horrible Green Lantern movie? Some of us want to forget.

Just had to do the Green Lantern thing, didn't ya? Fair enough...

I admit, I do find Cars to be the worst Pixar film, but oddly enough I'd still rather watch it over most DreamWorks CGI films, even the ones I did like. Even Pixar has to have a worst, y'know?

Does anyone else find it odd that Bob seemed to have compliments for this film for taking the sidekick and turning him into the hero but he seemed to have hated when Pirates and Get Him to the Greek did that exact same thing?

Still, I'm looking forward to Cars 2. I'm glad you didn't reveal any big spoilers in this video. I'll probably go see it later today.

...Are they seriously doing a direct to DVD "Planes" movie?

Wouldn't it be a funny twist if it turned out that the "Cars" world was really just pre-war Cybertron this whole time?
Quiet Bob, Michael Bay might be listening!

This is pretty much what killed Disney Animation. You'd think they'd have learned from the past.

Nice call back in the stinger. Well done. Had me laughing.

I'm sure my dad will want to see it, car nut that he is. I won't go, though.

Does anyone else also find it weird and oddly hysterical that outside of the Toy Story films, the only Pixar films that are getting sequels are the two that DIDN'T win the academy award for Best Animated Feature? (Cars and Monsters, Inc.)
