I don't think it will surprise anyone to know the level in question that inspired me to post this thread...

COD4, Veteran, No Fighting in the War Room.

I have been hopelessly stuck on this utter bastard of a gaming torture fest for the last 2 weeks.

I am almost at the point of giving up for the sake of my sanity and my flatmates (they are starting to wonder why I keep randomly shouting expletives behind my closed door...)

Have you ever been stuck to the point of giving up in despair?

And did you give in or fight through till you beat it?
Same here. I eventually just gave up. Whoever designed that level should be shot... those damn hallways absolutely infested with side corridors.

Water Temples in Zelda. Not just the one in Ocarina of time. ALL of them. Why are they so frustrating?

I agree that is the only one i can't get on veteran, I tried for a long time and just gave up. I might go back to it soon
Wierd thing is , the more it kicks my ass. the more determined I get to beat it.

Hence the anger... because I am starting to think I just don't have the reflexes. Then again, I got this far...

Oh well... [boots up COD4 again]

I got stuck on the Forest Temple in LoZ:OoT for 4 years. I got stuck and put it down until 4 years later, it was always a niggling little thing in the back of my mind.
I had to give in and consult a strategy guide in that game at one point... the water temple was ok but jesus, how the fuck was I supposed to know to randomly Bomb the rolling Goron on Death Mountain in order to open up the next part of the story??

Anyone who finished OOT without a guide deserves a medal in telepathy.
Does a friend telling you exactly how to beat every other part count as a guide?

Yeah it counts ... but I think I'm the only person on earth who didn't have any trouble with the water temple. (found Jabu Jabu's belly and Shadow temple much harder)

Like everyone else said, I Wanna Be the Guy. Currently somewhere in the Ghosts and Goblins section because you have to go through about 2 and a half long screens without a save.

Also, Ninja Gaiden 2 on Mentor (hard) because I'm too stubborn to skip the first Test of Valor. I want my Lives of the Thousand and the upgrade essence. It's too annoying trying to kill ninja that spam exploding shuriken, grab you and blow their arms off (then try to grab you and blow you up again), or shoot fireballs and summon pillars of fire. Oh, and spinning dives to the ground don't always make their heads explode the first time (cheap!)

Got stuck forever at the very end of the Forest Temple on Ocarina of Time because I didn't know the blocks could be pushed. I tried blowing up everything in that room, but got nothing.

Only once when I was still blossoming as young gamer I could not beat the giant pig in Diddy Kong Racing for the N64 (When he runs faster than your car and crushes you once in a while to completely stop you). I think I went without playing it for several month mainly because of other games. I did eventually beat it.

A few times.

What came to mind first was Crash Bandicoot. The one wiht the element god? Can't remember the name.

Anyway where you ahve to fight the water God and jump over loads of platforms while ducking, jumping, spining, dancing, baking a cake and generally moving like a complete spaz in an attempt to dodge the bunch of water waves he sends at you. That shit was awful

Yes. You most certainly are (although I found all three of those temples incredibly difficult).

the final boss battle in prototype, i would get him down to the point where one or two more combos could kill him. my strategy would be being extremely mobile, sometimes flying out over water and back on the ship. the boss would proceed to jump in the water and never come back up. ever. i was stuck for weeks trying to figure out how to kill him a different way.

Any level in Ninja Gaiden 2 Master mode. I have only been able to reach chapter 7 and I am perpetually stuck there.

Battletoads for nes. That damn hover bike level. I hate it so much.

Perseverance pulled me through ... eventually.
Same for me, at least 50 tries before I discovered the pattern for that bloody level. Then the all the other levels after that took about 50 tries as well. No mercy in that game.

I also remember getting stuck in one of the haunted house levels in Super Mario Land for a while because the stupid doors switching around all the time and I couldn't find the one exit.

Then there was the time I couldn't beat the underground desert stage in Diablo 2 with all the bloody beetles that explode with poison or lightning that nearly kill me in one shot. Also the boss at the end of the tunnel with his super poison attack kept me from completing the quest until I collected all armour and jewelery with poison resistance on it.

Capitol Wasteland.

But seriously, I've been stuck at the final boss of Dark Cloud for years now. I never really used the ranged characters, which are needed to beat stage 2.

Maybe I should try playing it again sometime.

I got stuck on the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time for weeks. Then my brother showed me what to do and I felt like a moron.

Then it was Fujin and Raijin (2nd fight, in Lunatic Pandora) in FF8. Sucked

God of War 2, titan mode. first translator.

the translator dies so easily once you get him to the podium, took me better part of two months off and on to beat this.

god, if you all think the water and forest temples in oot were hard try the spirit temple in master quest, took me three months even with a strategy guide. though i only played a few hours a week, still probably took a solid 40+ hours overall.

other than that the closest i have is that it took me 10 years before i finally gound the armor upgrade in mega man x2. oh and i still haven't beaten mega man 3.

Some levels on Call of Duty 4 Veteran stopped me for a bit, but I got them.
You just have to suck it up and get past them, sometimes it's skill that helps, but usually when you're stuck for weeks....it's mostly luck.
