The one time I bought a game without extensive research, I ended up with Crysis - which I had never heard of before.

Never.
Again.
The only real reason to buy Crysis is for bragging rights/curing your curiosity as to whether you can run the damned thing.
Then... you realize that the game just isn't very good.

OT: Harvester. I had heard about it from a friend, and then once I actually got around to playing it.. I was astounded. Most underrated Point and click game... EVAR.
Someday somebody will have to explain to me how it is so disapointing. I found it far more enjoyable than other comparable games released around the same time (Halo 3, Farcry 2 etc). I understand and recignize it was just another generic supersoldier shooter, but I felt it an above average generic supersoldier shooter (well, before the lame aliens took focus focus). Not revolutionary, but not bad either.

OT: I actually bought little big planet today, sure I've heard of it and even breifly played it, but I still have at best a vague idea of how the gameplay works (I may or may not like it, we'll see when my ps3 arrives next week XD). I impusle buy games regularly (given how rarely I buy games at all). I bought one of the jedi academy games before having played any of them and really enjoyed it. It was probably my favorite game at least for a time. Same deal for Guild wars (I'd heard of it but never seen/played it), god I loved that game. I can't even remember what n64 games I had, but given how young I was and knowing that I didn't have any internet, it's a fair bet that I had at least one game I bought blind that I would've loved (Banjo Kazooie would be one I suppose).

The only game I ever bought without knowing anything about it would have to be Legend of Dragoon. Bought it for like 10 bucks at gamestop cuz it looked interesting. One of my all time favorites.

Twice, in fact:

The first was Caesar 3, which kick-started my love for Sierra's (sadly discontinued/forgotten) city builder series.

The second was Heroes of Might and Magic III, another game I loved for ages.

I wouldn't say it turned out to be my favorite, but I absolutely loved it: Earth Defense Force 2017.

I was bored and looking for a cheap multiplayer game. They were selling this game for peanuts at the local shop. Picked it up and it turned out to be some really awsome stuff. Sadly, there hasn't been many other games out like it since. That's a real shame too. There are few big titles that tap into that raw metality of "Sometimes I just want to kill hordes of enemies and blow some shit up".

When I was little, some man came to the door asking if we would like to buy some PS2 games from him for a very modest price. In his collection was Half-Life, that of which I had never heard of before. It instantly became a favourite.

Star Wars: Tie Fighter

You haven't played Star Wars until you've disabled a mon cal cruiser using only a TIE interceptor.

Believe it or not: Baldur's Gate.
I was just walking around the local Electronic Boutique (Before they were called 'EB Games' or 'Gamestop') and saw this game with some cool box-art (You know, the Skull of Bhaal) and so I picked it up and flipped it over and read the back. I was intrigued! So I just grabbed it! I brought it home, and ended up with the first of my favourite game series of all time. I still play Baldur's Gate. Heck, I even write about it!

Dynasty Warriors 3. Don't judge me either. Also you thought Zhang-He was gay in the 4th one? Man you should see him in 3.

"we will counter them with a beautiful attack of our own..."

He actually makes He-Man look straight. (Not really)

Years ago I got Syndicate Wars for PS1 on a complete whim because I like Blade Runner and it changed my gaming life.

There have been quite a few over the years bought without prior reviewage. But the most recent one has to be Sword Of The Stars pack. I normally don't even play that kind of game but I thought it sounded fun. I hooked two of my mates up for a twice weekly LAN session.

Now every time we meet it's like that dinner party from DUNE. Everyone watches what they say and war could break out any second

To be fair: Crysis had it's moments. It also, was definitely not the worst game I had ever played.
My problems with Crysis, however, are not with what it did.. but what it didn't do.

The pacing was incredibly inconsistent, and didn't give you a good enough time to settle in with the Koreans as an antagonist, before the big plot twist comes around.

As far as combat is concerned: It was certainly a step-up from it's spiritual successor... but that's not saying much. The A.I. is either borderline retarded, or incredibly intelligent. There were certain times where the A.I. struck a good balance, and I can forgive them for their dimwitted nature from time to time (When put into perspective that they are on an island, surrounded by foliage that can easily conceal you, and that it's presumably quite hot out, which leads to your brain getting the best of you.) Other times, like them opening fire while I'm hiding behind a rock the size of a minivan, about 20 feet away.. is just inexcusably awkward.

Now like I said, I didn't think Crysis was the worst game ever. But it didn't satisfy me in any way.

I loved this game! I would play for hours and never get bored.

Mine would have to be Saints Row 2. It was completely over the top and didn't take itself too seriously. That's why I liked it so much.

Dynasty Warriors 2 for me. I had just picked up a PS2 at launch, and had no games for it. Had to find something... The store i was at had DW2 on it's display screen, it looked alright so i picked it up.. The game was pretty cool, but it drove me to pick up "Dynasty Warriors 3", with it's 2-player co-op, and BAM.. My buddy and i had the greatest 2-player co-op game that either of us has ever played!
