I've only beaten Contra 3 & 4, so I don't know about the first 2. While Contra 4 has 9 stages compared to Contra 3's 6, Contra 4's stages are mostly shorter. I think it is a bit longer overall though (and harder). Contra 4 seems to give you extra lives more often though. When I play through the game I often (at least once every playthrough) have moments where I'll screw up really badly and lose 3 or so lives in the span of 20 seconds, but still end up finishing the game with about 10 or so lives.

Where's the love for Radiant Historia? It's the JRPG that answers nearly every complaint about JRPGs. Meaningful choices? Got 'em. Linear gameplay? Not with the ability to jump through time. Girly characters? Rosche is so manly he makes Chuck Norris look like Richard Simmons.

Infinite Space
this time 100, infinite space is seriously a brilliant game. but sadly almost impossible to find. online is probably the only place you'll find it.
metroid hunter is probably the only good FPS on DS

Professor Layton series if you like puzzles, and only puzzles. The games are just one puzzle after another, with a story (with, I must say, very good cutscenes) that doesn't really connect one puzzle to the other.

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, New Super Mario Brothers, and Brain Age 2 are what see the most use on my DS. Your mileage may vary.
