THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.
I was wondering what my fellow Escapists thought about Fable 3? Lionhead has always shot for the stars with this franchise almost always coming up short but as Oscar Wilde once said 'we're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars'. I realise I may have taken this quote a little out of context but in an industry that seems riddled with developers playing it safe, its quite refreshing to see a game such as Fable 3 with such character.
Of course it's far from perfect, far too easy, the grey and brown colours are used far too often (but that kind of suits the theme of the run down population). But never the less the game is fun.
But my particular gripes with Fable 3 come with how close they came to actually pulling off what they promised. But it's dragged down by really simple things.
OK THIS PART MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS, I'LL TRY TO KEEP THIS DOWN TO A MINIMUM BUT YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. SPOILERS. SPOILERS. SPOILERS.
But I want to go into this because it pretty much sums up Fable..
Ok at one part you become king, that's what the game is all about, and on the way to becoming King you make promises to your followers. However as soon as you become King your warned of an incoming threat that will wipe out all of the land, and to combat this new threat you need money. The only way to get this money is by breaking some of the promises you've made and ruling like a tyrant but hey your doing it for the right reasons. This is what the game promised making tough decisions and it pulls it off brilliantly, except this incoming threat has a timer of sorts showing you how many days you have remaining until this great threat arrives.
The problem with this is that it skips days irrationally, I was trying to be a good King and using my considerable personal funds to supply the war effort and I had 125 days remaining. I then finished up this day believing I still had plently of time remaining, the next day was the day of the invasion I wasn't ready, I had no warning, even worse I nearly had the money in my personal funds all I had to do was transfer it to the treasury and all would have been fine but I wasn't able to. The worse part is that this section of the game is so good if only they'd have had a better count down system it would have been perfect. And now my character the greatest Hero Albion has ever seen now presides as King over all the land except there is nobody there because everybody died because he lost track of time...
But alas it's not to be, pretty much sums of Fable falling short over the most simple hurdle.
