THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.
I was wondering what my fellow Escapists thought about Fable 3? Lionhead has always shot for the stars with this franchise almost always coming up short but as Oscar Wilde once said 'we're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars'. I realise I may have taken this quote a little out of context but in an industry that seems riddled with developers playing it safe, its quite refreshing to see a game such as Fable 3 with such character.

Of course it's far from perfect, far too easy, the grey and brown colours are used far too often (but that kind of suits the theme of the run down population). But never the less the game is fun.

But my particular gripes with Fable 3 come with how close they came to actually pulling off what they promised. But it's dragged down by really simple things.

OK THIS PART MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS, I'LL TRY TO KEEP THIS DOWN TO A MINIMUM BUT YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. SPOILERS. SPOILERS. SPOILERS.

But I want to go into this because it pretty much sums up Fable..
Ok at one part you become king, that's what the game is all about, and on the way to becoming King you make promises to your followers. However as soon as you become King your warned of an incoming threat that will wipe out all of the land, and to combat this new threat you need money. The only way to get this money is by breaking some of the promises you've made and ruling like a tyrant but hey your doing it for the right reasons. This is what the game promised making tough decisions and it pulls it off brilliantly, except this incoming threat has a timer of sorts showing you how many days you have remaining until this great threat arrives.

The problem with this is that it skips days irrationally, I was trying to be a good King and using my considerable personal funds to supply the war effort and I had 125 days remaining. I then finished up this day believing I still had plently of time remaining, the next day was the day of the invasion I wasn't ready, I had no warning, even worse I nearly had the money in my personal funds all I had to do was transfer it to the treasury and all would have been fine but I wasn't able to. The worse part is that this section of the game is so good if only they'd have had a better count down system it would have been perfect. And now my character the greatest Hero Albion has ever seen now presides as King over all the land except there is nobody there because everybody died because he lost track of time...

But alas it's not to be, pretty much sums of Fable falling short over the most simple hurdle.

*MAYBE SPOILERS (BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY)*

I feel your pain. Finished the game earlier and the exact same thing happened to me. Trying to be nice and benevolent, and then realising I'm suddenly in the minuses in the Treasury. The way the calender moves is so daft that when it came to 1 year later I was caught completely off guard. I didn't have the funds but I still thought I'd have a bit longer to gather them. Suffice to say there's about two people in Bowerstone now...

I also think the ending was a bit of an anti-climax, and too easy.

Yes it sucks balls. I'm currently ruling over a scenic country with absolutely nobody in it. I wouldn't have minded so much if there were like 5 - 10 people in towns plus shopkeepers no matter what.

Also after you beat the game you might as well not be king considering you make no more kingly decisions at all and get no more benefits from being king.

The Fable franchise shoots for the stars?
Are these stars plastic and on the ceiling of a 7 year old's room somewhere in Wyoming?

Edit: Bah. Maybe it's the cold weather or the early darkness getting me in a pissy mood, but I'm kind of trolling here. Pardon my moment of assholitude.

My biggest gripe was the considerable lack of clothes and hair. Especially for women.
And the dyes. Never could I get what clothes I DID have just the right colour. It just sort of added a tint to whatever colour it originally was. And it was always in the wrong section.
I was actually pretty let down. Best Fable so far, but at the cost of damn near all of the customisation.

Plus, it was pretty buggy. The breadcrumb trail especially. But I imagine they'll fix that with updates.

Aside from that, it was pretty okay. I didn't really have trouble with the last part because I filled the treasury on the first day.
I mean, I guess that did make most of the decisions less difficult than they should have been. I could easily top up the treasury to make up for any costs I had incured. It would have been much more fun if I had actually had to think and weigh options instead of just darting for the good action each time.
I should probably play through again at some point without getting absurdly rich off of property, huh.

When i became the king, the choices i got are so arbitrarily annoying, why can't i build a factory but ban child labor? come on!

I was hoping the game would actually let me,you know, manage my kingdom, instead of being a figure head.

I loved it, I believe it lived up to a lot of the hype and promises. The only problems i have are the lack of things to do once youre king after the invasion and the lack or hairstyles.

gonna give you guys a tip if you want to play fable 3 again for whatever reason... when it gets to the last day and it has you go fight the darkness, if you immediately and go through a portal similar to the "road to rule" portals, you can go back in time to that 120 something day before the invasion. also, that was one of the reason i didn't put off putting my funds in the treasury, putting half my funds in on day one (which was 20 million gold).

this happend to me also, i had all the money i needed in my personal funds and the day came around. When the door to the road to rule opened i ran over to the pedastole in the treasure and it (thankfully) let me deposit it all. I got the good ending and kept everyone alive.

I loved the game, thought some of the choices were brilliant (especially the first one concerning Elise/Elliot... made me stop and think for as long as the game gave me on my first playthough!) and even the sanctuary works... mostly. Not being able to stockpile food and drink to eat when you want annoyed me. And marriage actually feels worth doing this time, for the simple reason that if you pay your spouse enough they don't want to see you much, and when they do the game actually tells you about it before they divorce you.

But on the other hand, they've removed so much of what made the other games good! For a start, when the hell are the normal weapons? Every single weapon in the game is Legendary now, what gives? And what about the black dye? I suspect this in unlocked by doing a quest to gather flowers, but may other colours are unlocked using the Road to Rule. And as for the health... really, Modern Warfare was not so good that RPGs need to copy its health system. I didn't mind Will powers becoming Infinate, but when the game puts an unremovable scar on our characters (wwhich is actually ugly enough to bother me now) for every "death" a nice clean health bar really is required.

And, yes, the 120 days being skipped happened to me as well. Honestly, I couldn't believe that had happened, I'm currently doing a second, almost identical playthrough just so the game doesn't rob me of my ending.

In all... yes, I did like Fable 3. But I really think it could have been better if the design team concentrated on what made the previous two titles good and stuck with that, improving the weak points. If they did that then worked up they could make a good game and turn it into a great one. As it is they tried to make a great one and ended up with something only good.

I guess it all depends on how much you do before the invasion. After the invasion, I still have a lot of achievements left, like getting all the books, gnomes, flowers, keys, and opening all the chests on the road to rule, plus a few other easier achievements. Nowhere near done after the invasion and I almost have 48 hours clocked in on the game.

Edit: Of course 8 hours of that is because of the reason below.

------

First off, I was able to save everybody because I found out about the stupid day thing. So, I bought up all the properties, and then let my game sit for the night with me in a corner of the castle. I had a book sat on my movement analog so that the 360 didn't hibernated. When I woke up the next day, I had 16 million to transfer over into the treasury. So, so take that Molyneux, I got a good ending where all the citizens survived.

It is a great game, I like it more than 2. I don't really like that they made a horde of achievements that can only be completed with a friend. I think the stupidest one of them all is the get all the weapons achievement, since it can't be done alone, because worlds have different weapons than others.

One achievement that I thought was going to be hard, was really easy; the one I am speaking of is the don't get knocked down once through the whole game.

The greatest problem with the game is the glitches. The silent Jasper glitch(Please talk Jasper what can I do to make you talk), the frame rate issues, people my adopted kid disappeared, the dog sometimes gets stuck in trees, and I had to reset my 360 because for some reason when I pressed B to back out of changing clothes, it activated my magic, everything in the room disappeared and I could get out of the room no matter what I did.

I watched the whole credits when I beat the main game; they had hundreds upon hundreds of testers, obviously they didn't care about these glitches; they are so easy to see and have happen, if I was running the show, I wouldn't have released the game until they were fixed.

But, all in all, it is still a great game. Totally worth the 80 bucks for the limited edition with all the extra goodies and in game goodies. I love the awesome fake book game case.

It seems they were trying to get across the, as they claim, not so black and white nature of ruling.

They failed, however.
It only works for people that aren't prepared for it. I found out before I beat the main game and found a way around it.

I didn't think the health bar was needed. I was like WTF when I first noticed the game didn't have one, but it wasn't a problem, because the game pops of the D-pad to show you need to heal yourself. Potions and food is so numerous and in expensive that it was a breeze getting the not getting knocked down achievement on the first play through.

Actually, I believe the black die is going to be released in DLC. Like a lot of other content that should have been included on the disc.

Fable 3 was a good game but I felt there could of been so much more. Some things I would of loved would of been...

[small]Spoiler's just because[/small]

The Battle against the "Darkness"

When the battle started against the shawdows it was right at Bowerstone. Why didn't it start at Auoura and spread across from there? I just felt like it dropped in. That could of been a wonderful chance to put in some Ship Combat trying to bombard the darkness in the desert or if you decied to build the fort in the desert you could of had the chance to travel to the battle starting there and trying to hold back the Darkness; How much money and support you have meant how much it spread; But thats just my idea of what was going to happen.

The Revolution

The battle was short and sweet; but I felt the Revolution should of lasted ALOT longer than that. There could of been chances to put in some decsions on where and who to attack, the chance to tear down some statues of the old king even battles in other areas of the city and where you would go.

Fable is a well put together game and im not bashing it; but maybe its a good thing when I wanted more? More action, more choices, more revolution?

Hi, jus thought i'd view my frustration as all of you seem to have the same problems, Lionhead understandably worked incredibly hard on all three of these fantastic games, and looking at it from their point of view half would probably say, "never satisfied! all them hours giving my heart and soul building all them towns and perfecting the missions i get no thanks!"
And the other half may be scanning thru the internet looking for and noting every single whinge, moan, complaint and frustration, and aiming to fix every single fault with the fable series.
I hope this is the case because such an incredible game can be so much better.
My own personal issues are the glowing trail glitch (dissapears). The removal of the mini map (never know where i am or how to get anywhere on foot) there are sign posts scattered around but very few. never liked using fast track. Not very in touch with the surroundings, can vault down a 10 foot drop, but not a 3 foot one somewhere else, cant climb, cant jump aaarrgg!
The shops in fable 3 i find rather silly as the stools only sell 1 item each i really dont like this and im sure most feel the same, i like to scroll thru a list, compare whos got what, see what i have, buy and sell what i want, not throw away 10 pies cuz i need 1 tofu (for a mission) Finally i;ve heard and agreed that fable 3 doesnt seem to flow as the others, if your wised up you know not to be king till you got several million and done all the side quests that dissapear after you rule, so before your king lots to do? well. thing is it feels like your stuck in time, after gettin your stats up runnin around makin everyone happy, theres nothing goin on and gets quite boring! on the other hand if you carry on the main story your time is limited! i hate time limits! i love to explore do things in my own time, yet not feel lost, keeping the story involved, im in my second play thru now as i fluffed up the first, only had $86,000 wen i was king! started again now tho bit wiser and with my rent and shop income i raised myself a heafty $35,000,000! Albion will live! anyway i think i ranted on long enough!
All i ask is someone from Lionhead read this and many other threads, to make Fable IV one of the greatest games ever made.
Apologies for the spelling, opinions welcome..

After my review I posted here where I ranted, I have found the best way to think about it.

When you play it, don't think you're playing Fable, but just another game, then let it prove to you that it is fable.
