You shouldn't have to get one if you don't want to, and they should understand and work around that if they really want you there.

I have it, and it's not as much of a timesink that people claim, I just have it on in the background as one of my 5 tabs, that way I can quickly respond to anything new my friends do. There's really not much to do on it except the idea that you're keeping up with your friends, that isn't that bad. It has helped me stay in touch with my old and internet friends. Plus you get the sadistic enjoyment of rejecting people you hate's friend requests, because many people think you should add everyone you've ever met, regardless of how you feel.

Dude...just get a facebook. its so freaking annoying when trying to contact people via various mediums, as you propose. Like, why call when email gets everyone at once, and doing it on facebook allows for better event management than email....yeah just get a facebook

Crazy, yet very easy idea and I'm just throwing it out there...
GET FACEBOOK.
That would be "get a facebook" not "get facebook" I can't go out and buy the site, and it's not like I DON'T have access to it already.

But hey, when there are 28 ways to contact me, if you're too lazy to send me something instead of just "facebook'ing" it, then you're/it's not worth my time.
there are 28 ways to contact you, but your just being stubborn. I wouldnt contact you...not unless we were really close. I mean, back when none of my friends had facebook it was different, but its a major pain to go out of your way for one person who could make one in five seconds. your already a member of 28 useless networking/forums/god knows what sites

has anyone else ever been in this problem is what I'm asking...
I personally don't like or have the time for a facebook just to get it out of the way right now
now the situation

There was a D&D party and I get a phone call
it goes like this

Him: "Dude where were you? Why wern't you at the party we sent out an invite"
Me: "Well I didn't get it"
Him: "Well everyone else did, what the heck?"
Me: "You sent it over facebook didn't you..."
Him: "Yeah why?"
Me: "You know I don't have a facebook"
Him: "Oh, well how the heck was I supposed to contact you then?"
Me: "Maybe call me like you did just now, send me an email, PM me through youtube, the escapist, newgrounds, send me a message though my xbox, steam, wii, you could have even skyped me"

so has anyone else had that happen?

...or are you all on the side that "I should have a facebook"
Okay, I'm going to take this one with some seriousness, so that when you see my lay the hate on Facebook, you know where I'm coming from.

I do not use Facebook. It doesn't look like any fun, worth my time, or even any good. There is nothing, but nothing, you can tell me that would make it seem like something I should get into. Connecting with others online? Already do that. Showing stuff off? That's why I go to forums! Funny videos? YOUTUBE! Facebook is overrated, and the more I hear about it, the less I will ever have the desire to get on it. It's the Jack Thompson Effect. Shout long enough and nobody listens.

So basically, Facebook and all of its numerous clones can go to hell. I'm not saying the users of it can go to hell. Just it in particular for ever being a bother in the first place. And as to the story in mind here, WOPR, your friend should've probably made use of one of the many other venues in which to contact you rather than relying on his network. How could he NOT KNOW that you didn't get a message from him? He'd have to look up the Facebook page you don't have to send it! That should've been the tip-off and he receives a fail for not realizing it.

Do not get Facebook.

I appreciate the mindset of the people who don't sell out to facebook. But I don't appreciate them whining about how they don't have facebook.

I have a Facebook account but only because i made it for a joke. I don't actually use it aside from having 2 people as friends. My friends know to call me or text me. Also....You don't have time for Facebook but have time for D&D and D&D parties? I haven't played D&D in years but last i checked one session of D&D was like 7-10 hours. Or is it different for you?
Alright I'll throw my hands up you've got me there

SORT OF!

normally I'm way to busy for anything, but I have this whole week off (thanksgiving break)

so in theory I could have time this week for one, but most of the rest of the year I wouldn't and I'd have to sift through the spam and ignore people telling me to get on facebook more often just to get things done (normally)

but yes, vacation = bored out of mind

haven't played D&D in years anyways

haven't been to an airsoft war either sense this past summer... and I ROCKED!

Yeah I've had that happen before. I have a Facebook but I don't go on that much. I've had people send me party invites, friend invites, and personal messages and after a while they tell me, "what the hell? why do you keep ignoring us?" I have to tell them that if they want to talk to me online they have to do it over youtube since none of them know the escapist exists.

I understand the rest but not going to airsoft wars is just despicable. I demand you go and start one right now.
I don't have any of my own equipment! it's all my friend Scorpions! (using screen-names)

I was the only person without an automatic weapon (had a sniper rifle)
first time playing

I only have my facebook to retain some kind of contact with the few people I care about at school, and to troll everyone else.

Unlike most people, I don't game on facebook, don't have billions of addons, don't take the billions of stupid surveys, and generally don't use facebook except as another place to troll.

I have no problem with people that don't have facebook, just like I have no problem with people who don't have a youtube account, myspace account, etc., etc.
What you do on the internet is your own business :p

While I'm not a fan of the interface of Facebook or its nasty habit of promoting a total non-private environment; I need it to communicate. I just think of it as a more advanced style of email. Post status of what is going on with me. Done. Message people who cannot be reached by any other means than Facebook. Done. Close the Facebook tab.

I've long since detached myself from Facebook. It is a timesink if you let it but if you simply stop and use it like a tool (instead of installing a bunch of shitty games and wasting your life answering the endless amounts of quizzes out there) it can be useful.

I never use the chat anymore, Skype is better and doesn't crash every seven minutes.

As for you OP, I don't know. How committed are you to not using the site. I think it is valuable as a communication tool even though I hate Mark Zuckerburg. Its up to you.

no, got facebook, and check it like email, its not that hard, when it comes to social interaction, one does have to conform to certain norms, and having a facebook page is one of them.

Concur. It's not like you'd complain about people expecting you to have a mobile phone these days, is it?

sometime back some friends of mine made a facebook account for me for laughs, they handed it to me when people they didn't know started adding me and I, seeing no use to it, immediately "suspended it" (since you can't bloody delete them for some stupid reason.)

But Luckily for me, my friends know me enough and have enough respect for me to take their time to actually send me an email, call or even a short message for events like parties, even though they admit it to be just a bit of a hassle.

If anyone don't want to warn me about events just because I don't have facebook, then I'm obviously not worth their time, and thus, they are even less worth mine.

And just to make it clear to some people, I don't care whether it take me 2 secs to re-activate my "old account." The fact remains that I have no interest in joining a network where people share pictures, and status-s (stati ?)It's not an idea that appeals to me, thus does not garner my interest. Although I might eventually cave in just to regulate what kind of pictures of me are going around, and only for that sake.

Sadly I share all of your struggles.

I always seem to get hit up last because my douchebag friends all got Facebook long ago without me realizing it and they announced all of their plans first there.

I don't care what anyone says, I pretty much was forced to get a Facebook, I even made a thread about it asking other people if they fell in this situation as well.

Yes actually I would, being that I can't afford one and my home-phone is dirt cheap.
they can't be bothered to call, instead they pull the "well I wasn't able to text you"

like the suddenly wanted to throw away money (texting cost more then talking here- last I checked) and lost their ability to talk.

EDIT: also my NOT having a cell phone caused me to fail geo science 2 years ago (long story... I'll PM you if you're interested)
