Concur. It's not like you'd complain about people expecting you to have a mobile phone these days, is it?
Yes actually I would, being that I can't afford one and my home-phone is dirt cheap.
they can't be bothered to call, instead they pull the "well I wasn't able to text you"

like the suddenly wanted to throw away money (texting cost more then talking here- last I checked) and lost their ability to talk.

EDIT: also my NOT having a cell phone caused me to fail geo science 2 years ago (long story... I'll PM you if you're interested)
WAIT WAIT WAIT!

So you're complaining that you don't have a mobile phone because it's totally free to talk on the internet. Fair enough...I suppose.

But at the same time you refuse to get a facebook account. What? Are you a total social hermit or something? xD
No, and you should read that over a few times instead of dropping to insults because someone is in a different situation.

Either grow up or get out.

I jumped on the bandwagon to early for that to happen, but I hardly get on facebook now. I was actually thinking about taking all of the pictures and things off of my facebook and then just letting it sit there forever. It's not like my friends try and contact me on there anyway.

It doesn't have to suck up your time. I use it to contact a select group of people, usually over the Facebook IM. You can also set up the contact preferences so it doesn't email you every 2 mins if you have people scribbling on your wall etc.

My profile is pretty empty and under a pseudonym (nothing forces you to use your real name) which seems to stop people being that interested in it lol.

I had a spate of that when I first opened my account, but I did a bunch of rejections and that was that lol.

Dude, I was kidding, cool it.

I'm just confused as to how you communicate with more than a one person at a time. We all know how things can change when trying to organise something and imagine not having a platform to be able to inform your friends of your plans all at once (facebook) or while not in your house (mobile phone) could be a major pain in the ass.

That's what I did back in August. I still pop in for a peep every so often to see how my nieces in NZ are growing up.

I left my e-mail address as my last status update. In three months, I've had no e-mails from any of my 'friends'!

I concur.

It's free, its easy, and no-one is making you spend time on it other than to quickly check up on messages / invites etc.

I got one for this reason precisely, so I could stay in contact with people and not get left out such as you have been. It's a no-brainer really, unless you're so stubborn that you refuse to get Facebook for some stupid reason.
It just makes stuff so much easier and other people have it...like litterally everybody. I don't get people who don't like facebook and have no reason to dislike it.

GET FACEBOOK.
You don't get it, man. The Escapist is full of radical free-thinkers (TM) who won't conform to your norms because they don't need your electronic oppression. *checks cell phone*
(You know... kinda like old people and gramophones. Who needs CDs? They're of the devil.)

Vocabulary word of the day: Luddite.
Young folks nowadays think it's cool if they're the ones doing it.

Sorry I just put up with a lot of people who aren't.

as for the question...

Mainly through Skype due to it's IM capabilities.
and I'm almost always at home, I work from home (for now-)
I go to school at home (long story-)

so getting ahold of me is probably easier and more responsive then posting something on facebook and waiting for people to reply.

unless I'm getting groceries or in the shower or something in which case I'll reply within an hour... or if I'm asleep STOP BUGGING ME AT MIDNIGHT!

EDIT: Oh, or steam, skype or steam both have grouping capabilities (although skype is FAR better for it)

and on my list of ways to contact me add "Bnet" to that list

also emailing me
I respond instantly (thank you email notifier!)

You should probably have a Facebook if that's how everyone keeps in touch, but that was pretty... not smart of your friend to not even remember that he invited you.

Umm... I don't think I'm being "cool" or anything like that, I just don't have time for facebook (because I'm very busy) and if I work from home why would I waste money on a cell phone when I can have a home phone and save a couple hundred a month.

As for me being Luddite (or whatever you would say for someone being a Luddite) No, I used to be ahead in the tech curve all the time, but there are some things that just arn't needed and cost an arm and a leg to have

i.e. a car when everywhere I need to go is 3-5 blocks away (I kid you not everything is that close)

I'm not saying cars are bad or have no use, I love cars, I just don't need one for where I need to go and I save LOTS money on gas

(-okay THAT and there's only 1 car and 2 people, and one of those people *cough* my mom *cough* needs her car to get to work in the mornings... so I'm kinda STUCK walking everywhere, but it's no burden at all)

With the right settings (and **most importantly** if you don't accept random strangers as friends...), you don't get spammed on Facebook.

It was a bit insensitive from your friend not to notice you're not receiving the updates though.

However, I had the case rencently where some person I know at work was disappointed that nobody remembered his birthday, however my first thought was "no wonder given you did not fill the birthday date on skype [or facebook]", I guess times change.

I got rid of my facebook after I had a friend of mine call me up and literally yell at me about how I never checked it. Apparently she had been "trying to get a hold of me for a week now!" and was angry I never responded.

I asked her why she didn't just call me, like she was doing right now.

She hung up.
In her case, it was quite silly of her to wait to call if she wanted something urgent, however email (or Facebook in that case) feel more respectful of other people's time because phone requires a person's entire attention at the one random moment you call whereas an email or private message doesn't assume people are available to respond right now or that they should drop everything they're doing to respond.

Another gripe is people who call from blocked numbers or abroad, yet don't leave a message if I can't respond, so I can't guess who the heck that was, but that's yet another thing.

Frankly OP, I wouldn't have called you either. This is apparently a gathering with a fairly large group of people, which is, surprise, much easier to organize with an event page on Facebook than pretty much anything else. Phone calls are saved for really serious situations where the personal touch is necessary, situations where an in-depth conversation between no more than two people is required, situations where an immediate response (as in, within the next minute or two) is necessary, or for talking to one's family/significant other. Facebook is very good at communication between large groups -- in fact, it's better even than e-mail, which on its own is far and away better than phone calls. Finally, when the situation is not time sensitive, it's actually more polite to contact someone over facebook, since you aren't imposing on their time in the way a phonecall out of the blue can do -- or am I the only one who frequently doesn't want to drop what he's doing to take a phone call about something trivial?

Also, the point of status updates, shared videos, pictures and the like is allowing people who know each other in real life to share and discuss them, even when they aren't in the same room -- or the same country, for that matter. The part in italics is why sites like the Escapist are not a replacement for Facebook -- I don't know a single one of you in real life, or if I do, neither party knows the other's username, and therefore may as well be strangers. On facebook, I personally know every individual on my friends list -- at the weakest connection, they're still acquaintances who I know in real life, and had some reason to add on facebook. As for status updates being annoying in and of themselves, yes, "Going to bed, see everyone tomorrow" may be pointless, but let's say the update is "Ran into Neil Patrick Harris on the city bus today!" to use an exttreme example. I don't know about you, but if one of my friends rode the bus with Neil Patrick Harris, I'd want to know. Ultimately, status updates are there to generate conversations; it's not the status itself that matters, but rather the conversation in the comments section.

In closing, if you actually want to stay in touch with your friends, do yourself a favor and get a Facebook account. At this point, you're acting like the luddites who complained that the telephone replaced the written letter. Well no duh it's being replaced, it's better suited to all but a select few forms of long distance communication, which the older option still gets used for.

Excuse the double post, but what kind of phone are you looking at that costs a couple hundred a month? I have a basic prepaid phone, which I buy a $30 card for once every two months -- and I could easily squeeze another month's use out of one card if it didn't use service days in addition to minutes. You don't have to shell out for a smart phone and a data plan to have the use of a phone that you can carry in your pocket.

No problem with the double post.
And I need a phone that can take a LOT of calls, and not cost me an arm and a leg; not texts or anything like that, just calls, lots and lots of calls... *sigh*

SO! we have a home-phone pay next to nothing a month, local and incoming calls free, and long distance calls have a very low flat-rate (like... 5 cents/minute... and I never make long distance calls)

so that's like what?
$3 for an hour conversation across the country?

Just hook it up with your email, and it sends you one every time someone posts on your wall, etc. Ignore anything with the words Farm Ville in it, and you'll be fine. Seriously, the time commitment is less time than it took to write your OP, and you get fewer friends bitching at you to make one.
I'll say I had a myspace for a month or 2 for that exact reason

I made it to shut them up (because back then I just hated everyone I came in contact with instead of ALMOST everyone I came in contact with)

then I was getting 3x the messages form them telling me to "CHECK YOUR MYSPACE!"

I did something to shut people up
and I get bugged more

luckily that noise they made stopped when facebook became popular

So what's worse?

"Make a facebook" "Make a facebook" "Make a facebook"
or
"CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!" "CHECK YOUR FACEBOOK!"

(yes I did that a proper amount of times so you could see the spam difference)

You could just check it every time you check your email, it actually takes less time. For that matter, I check Facebook daily, but I only check my email two or three times a week -- but that's because Facebook has taken over for everything but business e-mails, not because e-mail is less invasive than Facebook. It sounds to me like you're just looking for an excuse to avoid dealing with people.
