Frankly OP, I wouldn't have called you either. This is apparently a gathering with a fairly large group of people, which is, surprise, much easier to organize with an event page on Facebook than pretty much anything else. Phone calls are saved for really serious situations where the personal touch is necessary, situations where an in-depth conversation between no more than two people is required, situations where an immediate response (as in, within the next minute or two) is necessary, or for talking to one's family/significant other. Facebook is very good at communication between large groups -- in fact, it's better even than e-mail, which on its own is far and away better than phone calls. Finally, when the situation is not time sensitive, it's actually more polite to contact someone over facebook, since you aren't imposing on their time in the way a phonecall out of the blue can do -- or am I the only one who frequently doesn't want to drop what he's doing to take a phone call about something trivial?
Also, the point of status updates, shared videos, pictures and the like is allowing people who know each other in real life to share and discuss them, even when they aren't in the same room -- or the same country, for that matter. The part in italics is why sites like the Escapist are not a replacement for Facebook -- I don't know a single one of you in real life, or if I do, neither party knows the other's username, and therefore may as well be strangers. On facebook, I personally know every individual on my friends list -- at the weakest connection, they're still acquaintances who I know in real life, and had some reason to add on facebook. As for status updates being annoying in and of themselves, yes, "Going to bed, see everyone tomorrow" may be pointless, but let's say the update is "Ran into Neil Patrick Harris on the city bus today!" to use an exttreme example. I don't know about you, but if one of my friends rode the bus with Neil Patrick Harris, I'd want to know. Ultimately, status updates are there to generate conversations; it's not the status itself that matters, but rather the conversation in the comments section.
In closing, if you actually want to stay in touch with your friends, do yourself a favor and get a Facebook account. At this point, you're acting like the luddites who complained that the telephone replaced the written letter. Well no duh it's being replaced, it's better suited to all but a select few forms of long distance communication, which the older option still gets used for.
