I've had this for a few months now thanks to Household Hacker. I really don't mind it anymore and it makes things easier to find.
I'm not familiar, but it's interesting that you find it easier because I'm finding it to be a lot more of a pain to use.
I guess it comes down to personal preference.

That'd be nice. I'll try to get some information on that. It always seemed really weird that they'd keep that data.
Yeah, it's a nice bit of peace of mind to know your profile will really be deleted and not just put into cryostasis

They've been doing dumb moves for a while. The only reason I keep any of my accounts running is solely for online text roleplay; barely even that, since there's nothing but idiots. A vast minority are any good. The only way for me to get my stories done nowadays anyways.

But yeah. Ticker? Crappy. Lags the site often. I only like it to check up on who's messaging me.
The chat changes were the last thing that annoyed me, I still rarely use the chat, but this is just incredibly stupid.
But hey that's just my opinion ^_^ at least you still find some things there enjoyable

I find it hilarious how people continue to cry out in shock every time that Facebook does something to them.

Guess what?

You fell for it, it's too late now.

Facebook regularly 'updates' its privacy settings, which, if you kept your profile at maximum privacy becomes a problem since it'll use that as an excuse to reset your settings to public. If your friends tag you, they never let go of that information. If you go to delete your account, simply deleting it isn't enough; Facebook determines that you merely want to deactivate it, so they hold onto your entire account to reactivate it whenever you return. You have to dig through their FAQ for the actual deletion, which then keeps your account for two weeks and reactivates it if you check back in during that time. By then, it's safe to assume that they mined out whatever data you had.

As an experiment, I created two Facebook accounts. The first one I kept my name fake, as well as my info, yet once one of my friends was added it pretty much pinned down everything about me because my friends tagged me under my real name. I fully deleted that one. The other one I put at maximum privacy and used to just check the dining hall schedule at my college. Well, surprise, surprise, I have tons of friend invites from relatives and friends who simply searched and found me, despite that supposedly being impossible with my privacy settings.

I found it hilarious, because I wasn't like the majority, who plaster every single picture, feeling, relationship, and bowel movement to Facebook. You're never getting disentangled, and no matter how much you cry out every single time that Facebook again does something with your privacy, you'll never stop using it.

Again, this was a set of IMs from right after Facebook was released:

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb fucks.

He doesn't give a flying fuck about privacy, especially not since you're flinging it at him and he makes money off of selling that to advertisers. So, if you're using his product, it's a little bit too late to be offended when he abuses you. You're not his customer, after all; you're his product, and he's just making it easier for his data-mining customers to get what they wanted.

I just really don't have the ego for this sort of thing. I have an account to keep friends contacts. But I never post pictures, or status updates or even look at my friend's. If I want to talk I call them, or they call me. My life is not important enough to document for everyone to see.
I never actually uploaded a recognizable picture. The pic is of a two barrel carburetor that I rebuilt. Oh there is some info on me there, and a message that says that I don't check my Facebook account. I log in maybe... 3-4 times a year? I think I'm behind by about a year.

What year is this? Alright, maybe two.

OK, so don't use Facebook. Or keep using Facebook anyway, and just put up with the crapiness.

But whatever you do, don't sit around complaining about changes to something that is (1)totally free, and (2) that you don't actually have to use. The fact that you even have access to the internet means that your life can't possibly be all that bad, and a Facebook redesign is not going to change that.

SHORT VERSION: Suck it up.

There's a new update? I've got leet speak Facebook, they seem to update it last, so I'll have some comfort for a few extra days, I hope. What's so bad about timeline though? It's only stuff you've put on Facebook, which you obviously won't mind people seeing (hence uploading it to Facebook), so I don't see any reason to be annoyed about it.

First of all I'm not shocked about this since I saw the video when he first announced it long ago =P I was merely asking for peoples opinions on the new layout while also expressing my own opinion on the matter.

Secondly you have a very good point don't get me wrong, anybody who looks into facebook beyond just using it can see just how messed up it is, but we keep using it because it's convenient at the end of the day.
That being said this change might be enough of an inconvenience to make it not worth having an account any more, at least for me.

I personally don't use my real name on FB or upload any updates I wouldn't want a stranger to see, but I know a lot who do and that's where the problem lies.
So yeah, my concerns about privacy are more about the bigger picture, rather than my own privacy.

The main concern (at least for me) is the fact that anybody can effortlessly go through everything you've posted, before stuff you posted while drunk or stuff you might regret later (like those endless I'm in the middle of a break up statuses >_>) can be found on a whim.

But the more realistic problem is the fact that the new interface is just.. well... ugly, to put it simply.

But that's exactly why I made this thread, to get other opinions on it.

Can't you just delete things you don't want people to see? :p
But yeah, I haven't seen the new layout, and something tells me I don't want to. So I'll take your word for it on that.

Privacy isn't really a 'concern'...just don't post your address or any phone numbers you don't want the world to know...common sense really. I have to stop my girlfriend from putting the damned address on any party invitations she sends out - not because I'm afraid of the Indonesian Mafia finding out where I live, but because you never tell people where the party is until they arrive.

Really, we're not important enough to be a concern to anybody. If they can't use your information to steal money from you, then the information is perfectly safe. Except for the usual "Going on holiday for a week, house will be totally empty and the key is under the mat" farce.

Yeah, but if it's your own profile (I'm not sure if it's meant to be like this) but at the moment it's still the normal layout, so you have to click "older posts" all the way until whatever date it is that status update was made on to delete it, while any friend (or stranger) can click a couple buttons and be right there.
So in short, yes you can, but it's a massive pain compared to how others can get to the same status

You have a very good point, but in saying that I wouldn't really be /concerned/ that someone was in my bedroom for example, since there's nothing of value there(like with the not posting valuable information example) but that doesn't mean I'd be okay with it, if you get what I mean.

Wow, that video! I've been thinking about shutting off my account for a while now, that video finally tipped the scale. Started the process to get an archive of my stuff anyway.

Does anyone know, if you deactivate the account does it keep all your "stuff" with the option of coming back? Is there a way to delete everything?

Somebody else asked a similar question.
I don't have the source to confirm this so I treat it as a rumour, but it's meant to have changed to if your account is inactive for thirty days after selecting deactivate account, all your stuff will be wiped and your account will be fully deleted.

Nah, the difference here is that you're in control. You get to say what information gets out - if somebody's in your house, it means they've gained access to things that you've deliberately kept to yourself. What Facebook does is peruse your yard sale then tell all its friends what you're selling.

My thoughts exactly. This reminds me, I should probably un-friend family members. I don't use my actual name on facebook and any one of them could spill the beans at any time...As for the update, I don't care for it and am genuinely creeped out by the idea that being born today could be on facebook or even have their own profiles before they've learned to shit in a toilet. It was enough of an "I'm Old" shock to realize my 2-year old nephew's peers probably won't know what VCRs were but the thought of his peers potentially being on facebook right now (and him too thanks to his mom) was just a bit too much. 23 year olds shouldn't feel as old as I'm currently feeling.

Yeah even I have to admit that was a poor comparison but it was the best thing I could think of at the time.
Honestly though it's all just a big mess.
Worst part is there's nothing we can do about it (beyond not using it obviously) It's a real shame when "private" isn't really private at all.

Well, that's quite embarassing, and quite depressing; seeing your own facebook calendar, only to realize 5 of those years were just you sitting in front of a computer playing WoW, with no progress what-so-ever except more body fat and a lousier and greasier haircut.

Facebook really wants you to be as conscious about your drag every-day life as humanly possible, don't they?
Their motto should just be 'jump of a bridge now, you pile o' shit!' or is it just me being overly cynical?
Nope that sounds like the point of view of a well adjusted human being displaying a perfectly reasonable response to the overkill that is this new facebook feature.

To late its already over, once you start worrying about something you know its usually to late to do anything about it.

A social networking site goes against everything you'd believe about privacy. That's why sensitive conversations should only be done in person - even your phones could be tapped. -dramatic music-.

I don't really care about this, there's nothing on my profile I'm not scared of everyone seeing. I'm not a girl with nude pics on my profile and the delusion that only my current boyfriend could see them.
