Well with 2010 nearing it's end and with countless number of "game of the year" threads (I can feel them coming) I thought I'll make a Fail of the Year thread, the antithesis of GOTY!

So Escapist, what was the most disappointing game for you this year and most importantly, why. Also, don't flame anyone.

My most disappointing game was..weirdly Bioshock 2. I loved the first one to death but...this..was different. It just felt clunkier and not as immersive both plot and gameplay wise.

I think BioShock 2 was a WIN of the year, because it actually had a plot (plot does not count as backstory and inference through the environment alone, although I fully advocate those things when placed alongside a plot - see: HL2) that existed for more than 5 minutes. Oh, and the HUD was the same resolution as everything else - I can't tell you how angry that made me in the first game.

OT: Mine is possibly Splinter Cell: Conviction, not because it was bad, but it wasn't what I wanted (and I was looking forward to a Bourne-ish style Sam, but they didn't do it right).

There's only one answer to this question, and that is Final Fantasy XIII.

One of the most disappointing games in my whole gaming life, let alone my Gaming year.

Feel the same way about that one.
And also have very similar feelings about Dead Rising 2 unfortunately. It didn't seem to improve much (I know it had lots more stuff, but it wasn't declunkified at all, which was my only complaint with the first).

I gotta say APB. The game died because of people like me: I really wanted to play it, eagerly anticipating its arrival... then I suddenly lost interest on release day, like everyone else.

Metro 2033.

Its as clunky as trying to have sex with a steam train and stops playing just as many times.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. it is...

This might change if BC2: Vietnam is everything i predict it might be from an industry that is as subtle on war as Frankie Boyle is on racism.

the biggest fail of the year is that they STILL didn't start considering playing Finalfantasy
as a crime.

and yes I will keep on spelling it like that

HAWX 2, I mean, you have us flying through a tunnel only able to move about an inch. And we're supposed to go really boringly slow... Oh, and the game doesn't end until 5 levels are it should.

Halo: Reach

Probably the greatest multi player game IMO, with hundreds of hours of gameplay, a ton of content and a huge community. The big let down was the narrative. The characters were bland and cliche, lacked any depth of personality and TBH, I didn't give a damn when they each died one by one. The story was targeted at long time fans who (like me) had played every other game in the series and read several of the novels. Each mission basically boiled down to getting from point A to point B while achieving objective C and killing anything that got in your way. Admittedly, this is how i like my Halo; a run and gun shooter. But that didn't give Bungie the excuse to get lazy with narrative.

The way I see it is that a narrative requires an orientation (ZOMG Covenant! next mission...), several complications, a climax and a resolution. In this case there was no resolution, just the end of another complication introduced toward the end of the story. At the end of the day, Reach is still just as boned as it was before Noble team came along.

At the end of the day, I still love Halo for what it is, but the game I have now dubbed 'Retch' just made me depressed, story wise.

I miss the Master Chief and Cortana...

Fallout: New Vegas BUT only because the other game I bought this year was Mass Effect 2 and it fails because the last mission, for me, was rather disappointing.

How exactly is it clunky? I find the game to be fantastic story and gameplay wise.
A few people didn't get drawn in, like me. Something about it just annoyed me to no end.

And I encountered a glitch that didn't allow me to reload my shotgun after firing both barrels >_>

OT: Two Worlds 2 for me. I suppose I really shouldn't have expected much from it, seeing as Two Worlds 1 totally sucked. I kinda expected them to LEARN from their mistakes and such, and think of small things like... more horses maybe? You get ONE horse early on, which you NEED to complete a few early game quests, so good luck to you if you lose it.

Well, I expected the most out of God of War 3 and it let me down the hardest.

It wasn't a bad game at all - as a matter of fact, it was fucking awesome - but Sony Santa Monica really dropped the ball in providing a fitting end to Kratos' story.

Force Unleashed 2, hands down.

How do you manage to make a trailer more action packed than any of the movies and build up so much anticipation for a great story and brutal gameplay only to create a game SHORTER than its CRIMINALLY short original, with a weak plot, EMBARRASSING cameos and somehow, even MORE redundant gameplay than the first game? (How did they make gameplay boring with TWO lightsabers? AND a rage mode? And mind trick? AND DISMEMBERMENT?! How did that HAPPEN?!)

And to top it off, the game ends with no explanation as to how Starkiller truly returned AND the worst boss fight of all time. I don't think Vader even ATTACKS you!

Only buy good games. Therefore, never disappointed! Works for me.
Are you serious? You never even brought a bad game..or got one as a gift.

Weirdo...
Nope. I only ever buy 4 games a year (usually). This year I bought Costume Quest, Alan Wake, SC: Conviction, K&L: Dog Days, Super Meat Boy, Limbo.
I could consider Dog Days to be disappointing, but that's because as a fan, it doesn't have enough story moments in the game like in the 1st that were memorable (grabbing the girl in the night club; shooting from back of van into the subway; Lynch losing it in the bank and seeing cops as pigs; the Truck boss). And also, Lynch isn't as crazy, which is stupid because I wanted more in-game freakouts.

Of course, people who hate Kane and Lynch wouldn't care otherwise.

Fairytale Fights and any other game trying to take cute teddy bears or fairytales and try and turn them nasty. Never played a game I got rid of so swiftly in my life!
