Everyday. He always lies to impress other people about the amazing stuff he's apparently done, I feel sorry for him really. He's managed to earn the title 'Billy Bullshitter' even though his name's not really Bill.

You can tell a "fake" fan, because they seem to know everything about a bands history, except for the lyrics to any of their songs.

My point exactly, you beat me too it by a long shot though...

But I also have a sixth sense for posers who think they know stuff about stuff they don't know anything about.

My friend does this with a band called Hollywood Undead, "I love them!!" He cries, then follows me round singing the first bit from one song, not knowing the rest of the lyrics/ any other songs by them

The offsides always gets people in both soccer (futbol) and hockey. Offsides in soccer is a little easier to understand and explain to someone but hockey is just funny. Usually if you will ask someone who doesnt know about offsides in hockey they will say something to the effect of the soccer offsides (ie attacker behind the defender). Then you just have to laugh and ask them what the blue line is for. Always a good laugh.

It took me ages to work out the offside rull in hockey. It's so bloody complicated and I couldn't understand why the play would randomly stop. I know now though...at least, I think I do. It's when an attacking player crosses the blue line on the opposing teams end before the puck...unless he's carrying it....I think.
Pretty much the rule is: the puck has to be the first thing over the blue line. If the puck goes out of the blue line after being in the entire offensive team has to get out before the puck can go back in. If the puck goes out and comes back in before everyone "resets" then it is an offsides.
And then you also have icing.

No, I mean the kind of Fallout 'fan' who only likes Fallout 3 and thinks that 1, 2, and Tactics are boring, etc. You know, like an asshole. But a Fallout 3 fan who wants to play the others but can't is still good in my book.
Oh okay. Yeah that is pretty asshole-ish. You know what's just as bad? Final Fantasy fans who only like the most recent ones. It's just stupid. (stated somewhere above me)

Okay, so the other day me and a few mates were at my house for a party, and one of the other guys there was talking to us about a game that all of us loved and kenw practically everything about, so we were talking and telling him what we knew and asking for his opinion, but all the while he had a look on his face that just told you he was overwhelmed, i should say, and frankly he was
so then, afterwards, after a solid twenty minutes of talking, we decided to play the game and see how good he was at it, how he played, etc.
only after we started up the game and handed him the controller, he was lost horribly, and it became obvious that he didnt know shite about the game
so yeah, that pretty well soiled our good time, for all of three minutes...

so the point of all this is, have you ever met anyone like this? that pretends to know about some game/music/movie/etc. when they really dont? and if you have then what do you think of them?
[sup]discuss...[/sup]
So let me get this strait. He isn't a real fan because he isn't as good at it as you?

A fan is anyone who enjoys a game. An elitist douchbag is someone who judges people solely on how uber leet they are. Which one do you thing you end up being?
alright ya wanker, listen hear
that guy was being an ignorant tosser(much like yourself now), he didnt know shite about the game, and i wasnt saying that he wasnt a "fan" of it because he didnt play well, im saying he isnt a "fan" because when we handed him the controller, he didnt even know what type of game it was
the entire time, he was just tryin to get into our conversation and pretty much just be our friend
and he is now, so im not saying that it wasnt right for him to do that or that he should be penalized for it, i just decided to make a thread about it on here and see what other people think

so dont you dare call me an elitist douchebag...

I act like a fake fan to bug people I don't like. I might look stupid briefly but they look like wankers gushing about some tripe nobody around them cares about.

Alright, before I begin, I want to sort out this whole 'fan' 'elitest' thing thats going on.
As I see it, a person can be a fan of a game series/band/etc even if they've only played one game/song. That's fine, I mean, sometimes you hear or see something and just think "That is the SHIT". What I would consider a 'fake fan' is someone who pretends they have played/heard every game/song in a series/by a band, but have only really played/heard one game/song. Or if they've never done any of these things and claim knowledge on them. These people are annoying, but fun when they crash and burn when caught out.

Now, in my personal experience, I have a friend who is a more of a 'Yes Man'. He agrees with every statement/view/idea and listens to and plays every game/song we talk about. I mean, yes he's part of our group of friends so he doesn't really need to prentend to like the same things, but it gets annoying when you have an argument between say: Me and another friend about a topic. He'll jump from side to side very quickly depending on who is winning. He also listens to music my friends listen to, only because they do.
Example: During a recent school camping trip, me and my friend hung out in his cabin, talking and listening to music on his phone. He's into the whole Rock/Metal/Emo thing and I'm more of a Trip-Hop and Electronic person; but we find common ground. Anywho, my 'yes man' friend comes around when my friend starts playing some Bullet for my Valentine (of which, I don't mind too much, but it's not my favourite band). Now, my 'yes man' friend decides (I guess) that he wants to fit in and now starts listening to Bullet as well. Now maybe, he just likes the band, but given his very agreeable nature, the previous music he listened to (Mainly Pop and Classic Rock) and the fact he (very loudly) advertises the fact that he is listening to Bullet when around my friend's friends, I find that doubtful.
Although 'fake fans' may be a little annoying (and funny when they fail), a 'yes man' can be worse, because they are able to change very quickly, which is a trait I don't find particularly appealing.

Anyways, thats my two cents.

So basically we're in this thread complaining that gaming culture has become mainstream popular enough that it now attracts poseurs? When 15 years ago we were just hoping we wouldn't get beat up in high school for admitting we play video games?

Hmm...

Than please tell me how to start a decent character! Seriously! I kept dying in the temple of Arroyo, mainly due to the fact that I cant hit anything with melee weapons, and after that dont have any money to buy the 10mm pistol in Klamath at the golden gecko! Even the rats kick my ass!
First set the difficulty to easy (although you may want to move it to hard when you read a skill book). Then create a character with unarmed or melee weapons as a tag skill (this will get you hroiugh the temple and they're still very useful endgame). Then chose a gun skill (small guns is the best but the others are worth considering), then the best skill is steal, if you use steal you can get virtually anything in the game for free. That should make the game less brutal, also try looking for free stuff or combat-free quests to get some cash early.

I've had this happen a couple of times with comic books I'm into, though I have no idea who would willingly pretend to know a lot about comic books. It's really not a great way to meet members of the opposite sex.

We still get shit for it, mostly from jocks who think the only good video games are Madden and shooters.

(I'm a college grad, btw.)

It's often very easy to tell whether someone is a legitimate fan or is just doing it to fit in. Oftentimes someone who's an actual fan won't just comment that they like the game/series/band/whatever, they'll comment on one of their favourite aspects of it or one of their favourite moments. Meanwhile, someone who's just trying to fit in will often just exclaim that they like it, and often try to do so louder than everyone else.
