If you overtake a raider camp don't stay for more than a night.
They always come back.

Get the animal freind perk.

Don't mess with a Mr. Gutsy, unless you have a couple pulse genades.

Explosives perk X3, 100 explosives skill and normal frag grenades (trade in technology to the Brotherhood to get more).
It one-hits anything in VATS (and in VATS they explode on impact)

Get the Chinese Stealth Uniform and Shiskebab. Then you can just kill most enemies in a single hit with sneak attacks and don't have to worry about getting shot at.

Nah only joking.

If anything, save often, and specilise. Go as small guns character, a sneaky character and so on. Otherwise its jackoff all trades master of none.

Im sneaky at the moment, its DAMN fun.

Save your bullets. Nothing is more embarrassing when your facing down 4-8 mirelurks, and all you ahve is 6 5.56 rounds and a fist full of 10mm because you were bullseyeing mole-rats and rad-roaches. If it is weak enough that it presents no threat, use melee weapons.

Also applies to sneak attack kills in general.

1. get a fat man and don't be afraid to use it.

2. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel

3. spend most caps on ammo and stimpaks

4. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel

5. Do 'Power Of Atom' quest first chance given

6. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel

7. keep a melee or unarmed weapon (depending on your skills) at all times and use them on weaker foe, like Radroachs, Mole-rats, weakly-armed Raiders, etc.

8. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel

9. Kill Smiling Jack at Evergreen mills and take his Terrible Shotgun.

10. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel

11. complete optional quests in 'Wasteland Survivor Guide' mission.

12. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel

13. (Optional) take Good route and recruit Fawkes when possible.

14. don't finish main quest without Broken Steel.

edit: yeah, I'm very serious about not completing the main quest without Broken Steel, and for good reason.

I never bothered with the house... Carry the bare essentials, and you'll be fine...

Only use Vats when you are stupid close, and the enemy is fast. Beyond that, no need for it.
BIGGEST LOAD OF BALLS. EVER.

What about sniping the crap of everything in sight when your small guns skill is maxed out, with 95% chance to hit every body part? Seriously man, what game are you playing here?
I hated vats, it took all the fun out of the game.

So it is not the "Biggest load of balls ever" just shoot them in the face and leave it at that.

Head straight to the Dunwich Building. It's a nice, relaxing place...
Ahem.
The only advice I can think of is that its worth going out of your way to get better guns as these will really help you (coming from someone who stormed the Capitol building at level 6, it was damn worth it.) And don't go exploring the wasteland before you're well prepared. You'll die a horrible death far away from safety.

Do NOT blow up Megaton until you've at least finished the Wasteland Survival Guide. You get a lot of good XP and some decent loot, not to mention the other quests involved with Megaton....

You also get the Survival Guru Perk, which could own assuming you took the quest seriously....

Head to the Rivet City science lab and obtain the intelligence bobblehead as soon as possible.
This is very good advice.

It means you will get more skill points every time you level up.

Just don't talk to anyone in the science lab if you want to experience the main quests in the intended order.

Don't forget to get the bobblehead out of megaton before you blow it up.
HINT: its in the sheriffs house, pickpocket the key or kill him and take it.

Having a good agility and intelligence score tends to help. Just don't raise them to 10.

Or go to his house when hes there and take it. Bobbleheads don't count as stealing...

My advice:

Find a guy named Smiling Bob. Shoot him in the face. Take his gun (THE TERRIBLE SHOTGUN(BEST SHOTGUN IN GAME)). Go to his shop. Take his inventory. Go deeper. Get his bobblehead. Win

for all enemies, try and get as close as you can before you use vats, e.g. if attacked by a molerat, wait until it's almost close enough to strike before you blow it's head off. Obviously this does not work for more powerful enemies like radscorpions, but still remains a good tactic for small groups of supermutants. Also, sinks in toilets are an invaluable way to get health without depleting stimpacks (which you should buy in bulk).
