Well, if all else fails, turn the difficulty down. Oh and if you see fire ants, I'd run, unless you have a ton of stimpacks.
Yes, LISTEN TO THIS MAN.

AVOID THE GRAYDITCH. AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Fire Ants are totally BS, skip the quest, head straight to Rivet City, southeast corner of the map, if you're feeling daring.

It's a long trek.
*Checks wiki page on Fallout 3 fire ants* They breath FIRE!? What the hell! As if being giant radioactive insects with pincers larger than your arm wasn't bad enough.
And they sure as hell can take a beating. It's not fun when you're low level, when you're level 30, you can pull off that shit easily, and having enough rockets to feed a small country for decades can't hurt either ;D

You should also know, Grayditch is on the way to Rivet City, try to walk around towns, because Grayditch blends in with the rest of them. And if a kid tries to talk to you about "monsters," simply dismiss him and be on your way, he'll start the Grayditch quest if you keep agreeing to help him.

or if you have really good long range gun
also; the alien blaster will destroy them
Seen it, need to get it. Deathclaws' are screwed now.

What are the general requirements for disarming the bomb? (Sorry, I forgot.)
I think it's around 23-27 Explosives. Just pop some Mentats and you'll be able to disarm it just fine. Wearing clothes like the Science Lab and Glasses that increase your INT would also help.
Sounds good. I'll try that. Should I put a few skill points into it?

Greyditch is fine once you get a Combat Shotgun and a decent amount of ammo. After that the Fire ants are a joke. That actually is a pretty good quest to do somewhat early in the game (~level 10 or so)

I have a Combat Shotgun at 35 DMG, but very little ammo. I'll try it later.

Eh, I found that I never really ever used explosives while playing, although if you're really planning on using grenades, mines, etc. then putting in a few points couldn't help, although I'd recommend focusing on Small Guns first and then branching out.

I've been focusing on that, along with Sneak and Lockpick.

If you really want a challenge, make Speed, Charisma, and Intelligence your only worthwhile SPECIAL traits. Just saying.

That's a good idea; Lockpick becomes extremely useful and using Sneak to get surprise attack crits is immensely powerful. However I'd still recommend putting some extra points into Repair.

One thing to remember, though, is to not raise any skill above 90. The bobbleheads for each skill raise them for 10 points, so putting in any more would be a waste.

There is no wrong way(Except dying). But if you have Broken steel i did find a set-up to max out all skills and attributes.
With Broken Steel you can do that pretty easily. Almost perfect perk, then collect bobbleheads. Skills will all max out at like 26ish

correction there is 1 piece of knowledge i have not experienced in fallout and i almost have the answer. yao guai meat gives you a stat bonus (damage increase) so im pretty sure you can get addicted to it and i do not know for sure if you can or the effects of the withdrawal if possible so give it some time im stockpiling yao guai meat for my test (too bad all the yao guai in the yao guai tunnels are dead and dissapeared cuz i only have like 15 yao guai meat at the moment)

I'd start bumping up repair, maybe. What problems are you having? Getting destroyed by Super Mutants? Being discovered sneaking?
Super Mutants are the problem. Takes me forever to take em down by Hunting Rifle while they have the same weapon. I'm thinking of bumping up repair, now that I see how useful it is.
Historically the Supermutants are the toughest standard enemy in the Fallout games, and I believe Fallout 3 is the first one that throws them at you this early. So, to an extent the answer is, they're supposed to be that tough.

At the risk of duplicating someone else's post here. Some of this is just me being a munchkin.

Perks
lvl 4: Educated
lvl 5: comprehension (save your skill books until you take this

Between these two it's pretty easy to max every skill out by your mid 20s.

Seeing as you're struggling, I'd recommend toughness for level 6, and get your medicine and repair up to 60 each for cyborg at level 14.

Also, as a general rule, never invest points to raise a skill above 80 unless you've already found the bobble head. Skill books (with comprehension) and the +10 from the bobble heads will finish those skills off for you nicely.

Bears. Radioactive mutated bears. My advice is carry a combat shotgun for them.

They tend to start appearing around lvl 8 mostly through the south western half of the wasteland.

If you want to potentially have an easier game, max out your charisma and speech so you can skip quests or end them easier (and even get more stuff outta deals).
And be good so you can have a guy name Fawkes, who's a HUGE help.

WTF is it with Fallout 3 and making already terrifying things even more terrifying? Giant Ants, Giant Scorpions, Mutated Bears, what's next? Octosharks and gigantic spiders with bat wings?

No. Mutated Crabs and genetically engineered chameleons.

Oh, hey and New Vegas is bringing back the Geckos. Those fucking geckos from hell.
